Chaeyoung entered the library for the sole purpose of sleeping. She scanned for the perfect spot and failed to find it because something caught her attention, she went for it,
"Penguin-unnie." She whispered, enough for the unnie to hear and look at her. Chaeyoung beamingly smiled at Mina.
Mina wondered why this girl is always smiling, something tugged her heart,

She's the complete opposite of that girl...
Mina still remembers her first meeting with that girl, she clearly remembered how she felt when she saw her.
That girl, she was outside their house sitting on a chair just in front their outstanding garden, she was hugging her knees. Mina was 9 back then, so was that girl but somehow that girl, she looked older,

Was it because of those bloodshot eyes? As if she never slept even just a night?

Was it because of her blank face? As if she has never showed even the slightest emotion before?

Or was it because she...
Somehow looked...
Lifeless? Has she never lived a day without a smile?

"Hi!" Mina's body and mouth moved on their own, "what's your name? I'm Myoui Mina. I think our dads know each other."
That girl, she just looked at Mina and never even bothered replying but the little penguin didn't stop until she could bring even just the tiniest sunshine in that girl's heart.

Mina sat beside her, telling that girl all the wondrous things in her life, how she just started ballet and loved it so much already, how her tastebuds light up with just a smidgen of ketchup, how she likes to cuddle with her plushies until she falls asleep, Mina talked nonstop until she heard that girl sob. It was faint but her heart broke of how sad she sounded,
"Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you cry, I just want us to be friends."
But to Mina's surprise, that girl, she cried even more but it didn't feel like sadness anymore.
That girl, she hugged Mina. She hugged her to let her warmth give life to her monotonous life. Mina hugged her back, accepting whatever that girl felt, wanting her to know she's a friend.

"My name's Im Nayeon,"

that girl finally spoke,

that girl finally smiled,

that girl finally looked like her age,

Mina was happy, she made someone smile

"You know, Mina, you're my first ever friend."

She felt herself smile warmly as to what Nayeon is now- yes, she has a terrible attitude but it's much more better than having that monotonous life. Yes, she's selfish but she has a friend now whom she can share her worries. Yes, people around thinks and knows her as one of high school's cliché character, the basic , but she's more than that, Mina tried so many times to let other people understand but Nayeon said that it's enough that only Mina knows her. Because Mina will always be her friend, she promised her that. She's much, much, more better now than before- her lifeless self.

Her train of thoughts were interrupted by a bewildered look from Chaeyoung,
"Penguin-unnie, what's wrong? You've been staring at me with this creepy expression."
"It's nothing, you just reminded me of someone." Mina smiled warmly at her, she rested her chin on her palm.
"Was it your lover?" Chaeyoung looked down at her feet, fiddling it.
Mina just laughed heartily,
"No, she's my best friend."
Chaeyoung's head shot up and blushed,
"Oh.."
"Well, sit down, tiger cub."
Chaeyoung pointed to herself,
"You mean me?"
Mina chuckled, and nodded,
"You said I look like a penguin, well you look like a tiger cub." Mina beamed her her gummy smile once again.
Chaeyoung never felt so alive before, her heart was thumping so loud, she thinks it was visibly obvious.
They chatted for a long while, Chaeng asked Mina all about herself not missing a single detail when she answers back. She made mental notes of Mina's habits when she talks, how she her lips unconsciously, how her voice sounded so serene, Chaeng couldn't help but sigh in admiration,
"Well enough about me, how about you?"
Chaeyoung thanked the God who was behind this lovely scheme. She was about to talk when Mina's phone started vibrating,
"Sorry, I have to take this..
Hello? ...Hey why're you crying? ...Where are you? ...okay, okay stay there...
Sorry again Chaeyoung-ssi, I need to go. It was nice hanging out with you."
