The Truth

Basic

Jeongyeon sat on the swings. Her knees were wobbly. Every beat of her heart stung. It was suffocating her. She wanted to just close her eyes and forget. But the moment she does, Nayeon's sleeping angelic image would pop out of nowhere. And it crushed Jeongyeon to bits. Every part of her face was perfect and her lips, oh God her lips, it was enticing. She was shaking. Was it guilt? Regret? Did she do the right thing? A myriad of questions were bombarding her brains. She was getting lightheaded. She pulled her hair out of frustration. She'll let Nayeon know everything and then she'll realize how much she meant to her. But still, it hurts... her eyes clearly said she hates her now. Is it too late?
"I guess she was right, I really am a coward and a jerk."
Jeongyeon stood up and began her walk home with the burden of the world on her shoulders.

"What took you so long? You were gone for almost three hours! It's already 11:00pm, unnie." Chaeng whined, but she was worried at the most part. Jeongyeon looked dull.
'I've been sitting in the park for two hours then.' Jeongyeon stated mentally.
Jeong couldn't help but get worried. Nayeon might do something irrational,
"Is Mina still awake?"
"Maybe. She said good night to me, just now. She might still be up. Why?"
"I need to ask her a favor." Jeongyeon looked so determined that Chaeyoung didn't ask her any further questions.

"Hello babe? I'm fixing my bed. I'll be going to sleep." Mina said on the other line
"Uhh, Jeongyeon unnie said she wanted to ask you something." Chaeng handed Jeongyeon her phone
"Mina? I kind of need you to do something for me."

12:00am. Mina was outside the Im's mansion, Jihyo buzzed her in.
"What brings you here this late, Mina-ssi?" Hint of annoyance was clear on Jihyo's loud voice
"Sorry. I just wanted to talk to Nayeon. It's pretty urgent."
Jihyo just nodded, going to the kitchen to make some drinks for the midnight visitor,
"She's actually outside, on the garden porch."
Mina said a quick thank you and proceeded to where her best friend is,

"Nabongs." She said warmly, Nayeon turned to face her for a moment but turned her back to stare on the garden once again.
Nayeon's eyes were puffy and red but her face displayed every bit of coldness she had in her heart,
"Why're you here? It's 12, Mina." She said, her back still turned, "Let me guess, Jeongyeon told you so."
"She told me nothing but just to come here and see you." Mina said as she approached her and stood beside her, "I don't know what happened but you know that I'll be here for you, always."
They went silent for a long while, just staring on the very place that holds Nayeon's darkest and brightest memories- the garden. It was the place where she uncovered the most painful truth but was the place she met Mina. And also, it was the place that she felt special; Jeongyeon made her feel that she's the only girl in the world, her gaze at her said everything that one night. But now, those were just memories. No more, no less.

They've been looking at the garden for a long while that Nayeon decided to gaze at the stars, Mina did too.

"I know you might be worried that I'd slowly fade away because I'm with Chaeyoung now.." Nayeon was still silent,
"But I'll never. I'm really sorry if I didn't tell it to you earlier."
Nayeon still didn't respond nor look at Mina,
"For the record, Chaeng might be my other half now but you, you will always be family. A sister, maybe not by blood, but for life." Mina gently said, making sure Nayeon felt the warmth in her words.
Nayeon nodded and smiled at her best friend and sister,
"I'm okay with that."

Chaeyoung wasn't that dumb or dense to not feel that her unnie was feeling down. She didn't ask because Jeongyeon was the kind of sister who'll tell Chaeng her problems when she's done contemplating about it and is ready to talk.
Her unnie was there physically, but was obviously absentminded. She cooked omelette but forgot to throw the eggshells in the bin, resulting to a crunchy meal. Chaeng didn't even complain, she has to endure since her sister was in deep thoughts.
Jeongyeon just sat there, staring at nothing when Chaeyoung tapped her shoulder,
"Unnie? School?" She asked with a concerned face. Jeongyeon just nodded.

The rest of the morning wasn't any different, Jeongyeon floated around the school just like a balloon.
Lunch break was done but she didn't remember what happened only bits of it like Chaeyoung talking about how Sana described green tea is green and how she stole glances at Nayeon who was getting colder than ever.

Vacant period, Jeongyeon decided to go to the library with the thought of finishing their, Nayeon and hers, notes and homeworks. She knows that there's 90% probability that Nayeon would be there but it's okay, she's ready with her speech.
She entered the library and immediately found Nayeon and Mina. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. Taking in every confidence she could get, she walked towards them. Her heart was racing, her armpits' probably wet went she arrived at their table. Her palms were sweaty.
Before she could even attempt to say a word, Nayeon stood up and walked pass her intentionally brushing their shoulders. Jeongyeon was dumbfounded, lightly parted.
Mina stood up after and gave Jeongyeon an apologetic look,
"Sorry, Jeong." And tapped her shoulder.

After a long while of just standing there, frozen, Jeongyeon sat down and slumped herself on the table. She closed her eyes and calmed her heart, her veins, her everything. Nayeon was making it so hard for her, if only she'd listen it'll make everything easier for them both.

Jeongyeon sat there, contemplating. What happened last night flashed back:

{Jeongyeon POV}
Is she going to kiss me? I'm having palpitations. What should I do? Should I kiss her back?
And before I even decide on what to do, my body moved on its own. I didn't mean to step back. It's just if I kiss her now, it would be our first kiss and I don't want our first to be in a place like this, in a situation where she's so vulnerable; so sad and helpless. No, we can't have it like this, I can't give it to her now. She deserves the best in everything. I want our first kiss to be perfect, a memory that'll erase her horrible past.
I'll give that to her on the right time and I'll let her feel the fireworks that lurch up in my stomach every time our eyes meet, how I see sparks fly when she smiles, how my whole world brightens by her mere touch, how my lungs get intoxicated by her scent, how her voice pierces through my heart and tugs its strings creating a melody that soothes my chest, how I can't help but fall for her very existence.
No, this isn't the right time for our first kiss.

But her eyes, it started to glimmer with tears again. Did I do the right thing?
She started to cry again, I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt tugging my heart.
I wanted to hug her but the moment I reached out my hand she took a step back, same like I did. My heart sank, I feel like drowning. My pulse's racing. I looked her in the eyes and saw the last thing I wanted to see- hatred.
I tried to explain but she's blinded by her past and refused to listen. She screamed that I was one of them- those people who just used her.
I tried to talk to her again but the coldness in her stare froze me,
"Nayeon, if you would just listen-"
"I won't. I will never again." Nayeon snapped, "Don't even try explaining. I guess I really was just one of those basic es for you."

And she left.
{End of Jeongyeon POV}

"I'll let my feelings reach you somehow, Im Nayeon." Jeongyeon whispered to herself.

Chapter 30: The angst parts of your story are always just 1-3 chapters but rips and claws hearts in 8D. I literally felt the pain. It's like experiencing a real heartbreak. Even on the fluff parts, I can feel the fondness. You really got a way with words. I really love the way you write. Thank you so much authornim. Hoping to read more from you in the future. ❤️
