Re:have my 1000 word drabble again
my attempt at scifi?/apocalyptic?/postapocalyptic?/dystopia? (i have no idea what genre this is)
(and i wonder why i always have trouble hitting 1000 words for assignments)
(okay but actually this took me close to a day & i should be studying)
They were the last, he’d often hear people say. He couldn’t decide if it was a good thing because after all, he had witnessed his glorious country crumbled under his very own eyes. He stood in the middle of his street and remembered how full of life it was just days before, but it was now covered with ash and smoke. He received a letter some weeks later. He uttered a silent farewell before both brothers got whisked off into the pilot program.
The hangar reeked of petroleum and sweat. He slung his duffel bag over his shoulder and marveled at the giant aircrafts, feeling so tiny and insignificant suddenly. The people hurried along, shouting orders in the near distance. His brother gave him an affirming pat in the back and the look in his eyes told Woohyun that they will see each other again. He looked back for a last time as he got ushered into his bunk.
The guys in his bunk were all 90s kids, the youngest a 99-liner who still had baby fats clung to his cheeks. He made his way quietly to his bed, averting eyes to avoid being rude. His bed was at the far end of the bunker and he already decided to keep his eyes to himself, but when he reached his bed, he took a second look. She stood there in her navy coverall and her hair held in a tight ponytail, leaning against his bed frame with her arms crossed. Her face was taut and her eyes burned with an intensity Woohyun had never seen before.
“I’m gonna cut down on the pleasantries since we’re of the same age,” she said after taking a quick glance at his tag. “Hi, I’m your partner.”
“Hi, my name’s Nam Woohyun.”
He didn’t expect it, but she gave him a smile and extended her hand. Woohyun gladly took it.
They’d make a great team definitely.
They sat together during dinner, and one of the bunkmates nudged him in his chest.
“You’re lucky you get a girl,” he chattered on, “I’m stuck here with this boring guy.” He made a face at his buddy who continued to wordlessly stare blankly ahead. He casually hung his hand off the boy’s shoulder. “By the way, I’m Sungyeol and he’s Myungsoo.” He chirped, then leaned in to whisper quietly. “But I heard they’ll be taking our names tonight.”
Their meal got disrupted when their commander came in. He was everything that Woohyun had not imagined – young, fair and sickly. However, when he cleared his throat to speak, everyone was silent.
