Constellation

Falling Star

That night Byeol dreamt of Ghost Boy, this time he wasn’t silent. He was talking to her, asking her to find his dead girlfriend. She was scared, it was like a nightmare, and his voice was so quiet it will like he was whispering to her. She was terrified about the look in his eyes, he had an evil grin and he kept repeating… “Where is she? Where is she?” She wanted it all to stop, he covered her ears with her hands but now he was cackling and her ears started to ring.

“STAAAAAAWP!” Byeol yelled in bed and sat up. She reached to her desk and turned her desk lamp on. At the edge of the bed was Blue, Red & Blondie, staring at her like she was going crazy. She pulled her covers to her neck, “Why are you staring?!?”

“You were making weird noises in bed,” Blondie’s eyes were big as saucers. “You looked possessed, we were waiting for your head to spin but you screamed, STOP!”

Red and Blue backed away.

Byeol realized that she had been sweating, she wiped her forehead. Looked at the three, “Really?”

“Yeah,” Blue examined her again, “You must have eat something too spicy?”

Byeol looked over herself and looked around, “I hope I didn’t wake up my mom!”

“Nah,” Red sat back down, “She left as soon as you fell asleep.”

“Oh,” Byeol looked around her room again, it didn’t surprise her that her mom left but she wished she her mom was there when she needed her.

Blondie cleared his throat, “Let’s watch TV? Maybe you’ll go back to sleep and we’ll keep you company until then?”

Blue raised his eyebrows with an agreeing look.

Byeol liked that, she got up and grabbed her pillow and blankets walking towards her bedroom door. She put most of the weigh on one side of her body and reached with her left hand to open the door. The three were already gone and Byeol assumed they were already in the living room. Her bedroom door was slowly opening and she was reaching for the light switch in the living room, the lights .

“Uh,” Red started before the door was completely open, “I think you need to clean up first.” The three looked around the living room and her mother’s clothes were all over the place.

Byeol quickly dropped her bedding and ran towards her mother’s bras that were lying all over.

Blondie nervously put his hands over his eyes. While Red and was smiling. Blue was staring examining the lacey bra.

“Niiiiice” Blue gave Byeol a thumbs up with a smirk.

“ert,” Byeol couldn’t help but to giggle a little, he was actually decent and hasn’t been mean.

Blue shrugged the comment off and sat on the couch. Red followed and nudged Blue’s shoulder. Blondie slowly followed and had a slight hint off red cheeks, perhaps he was blushing the moment he saw Byeol’s mother’s bras.

Byeol grabbed her clothes and threw them in the hamper, she cleared the coffee table and put dirty dishes in the sink. When she was done clearing the living room she went back towards her room and turned off her desk lamp and came back out to grab her bedding that were on the ground. She looked at the three and then the couch, realizing it wouldn’t do.

“There’s no room for me,” she looked at the three with pleading eyes.

Red looked at Blue and Blondie, “I think you guys need to move.” He smiled at Byeol.

Byeol didn’t believe what he just said and her ears turned red.

Blue looked at Byeol, then back at Red. “You two need to move, I was here first and there’s only enough room for me and her.” His evil grin returned.

Blondie stood up, “Maybe we should all get up and sit on the floor and let her take the couch?”

“Yes! That’s a perfect idea!” Byeol thanked Blondie to herself.

Red and Blue glared at Blondie. “Where do you get these ideas bro,” Blue was looking at Blondie, shook his head and sat on the floor next to the couch.

Byeol jumped the futon and was excited to have company. She threw her pillow on one end towards Blondie and slowly sat down and got her blankets over her and plopped down. Blue was down by her feet and looked at her somewhat annoyed. Red was leaning against Blondie and were getting comfortable.

“What are we watching?” Blondie asked his excitement was adorable.

Red turned to Byeol, “A scary movie?”

“No!” Byeol sat back up, “Anything but horror.” She tried to lean between Blondie and Red but ended up going through them to reach the remote for the television.

“Whoa!” Red moved off to the side.

“Sorry,” Byeol jumped back, “Sorry, I didn’t mean too.”

“It’s okay, I can’t feel it,” Red sat back up, “Just tell me next time to move.”

“Sorry,” Byeol felt bad for making Red uncomfortable, “I’m sorry. I just didn’t want to make a fuss.”

Blue looked at the two again, “Can we watch a movie?”

“Sorry,” Byeol turned the TV on and started flipping channels.

Blue looked at Byeol again, “Stop apologizing too.”

“Sorry,” Byeol looked at Blue again, smiled, “Last sorry.” Then looked at the TV still flipping channels.

Blue nodded and turned his eyes to the TV, trying to hide the slight grin on his face.

“There’s nothing but infomercials,” Blondie was pouting. “There’s nothing on.”

“Basic cable?” Blue looked at Byeol.

“Sorry,” Byeol couldn’t help but to keep apologizing.

“Just turn it off,” Red sounded bored.

“Sorry,” Byeol turned the TV off and was staring at the ceiling.

“Stop with the sorry’s,” Blue stood up. “What else do you do when you can’t sleep?” He was looking at Byeol.

Byeol thought for a while, “I play music?”

“Okay,” Blue looked at Byeol like he was waiting.

“Excuse me,” Byeol said to Red. Red smiled at her and moved out of her way. Byeol smiled back shyly and went to her room to grab her iPod. While she was there she looked around and was looking for her room night light that rotated filling the room with stars. She hasn’t used it for a while and it was the last gift she got from her father. Walking back to the living room she placed the night light on the coffee table and turned it on. She walked to the light switch, turning off the living room light. The three were just sitting there waiting. She went to the speakers that were by the TV and plugged in her iPod. After placing it on random ‘Tonight’ by Big Bang came on. She happily walked back to the futon and crawled her way back into her bedding.

Blue sat there looking at the ceiling, from Byeol's angle she could see a slight smile.

Blondie sat there quietly and listened to the song, there was something sad in his eyes. “This is nice.”

Byeol looked up watching the constellation slowly circle her living room, “My dad…” her voice was already starting to shake, “My dad use to take me up on the roof when I was little and show me Orion.”

“Who?” Red turned to Byeol.

“Orion, from Greek mythology. He can be seen best in January around 9pm, he can be seen all around the world. He’s a strong hunter…” Byeol couldn’t finish her story, she trailed off and wiped a tear away. No one said anything for a while.

Blondie was on the brinks of tears himself and cleared his throat to change the subject. “Maybe you should try to sleep? It’s getting late and you have school tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” Byeol laid there for a while listening to the next song, ‘Don’t Go’ by EXO.

Red started to sing along, “Wherever you came from, or wherever you’re going, up until now you always kindly greet me..

Byeol was surprised he knew this song, “You know this song?”

Red quiet down, “I don’t know.”

“Uhh…” Byeol felt their pain now. She at least knew where she came from, these three knew nothing about each other. She felt tears again.

Red turned to her, “Don’t be sad, it’s just a song.” He smiled at her, “Go to bed.”

Byeol smiled at him and thought, I am going to find you. I’m going to find your true story and tell you what your name is. With that in mind, she listened to the start of the next song and watched the constellation until she drifted off to sleep. The last words were from Lee Jonghyun calling out to her as she dreamt of Ghost Boy, this time he was sitting next to her on the roof top as Orion shined brightly above them.

The sun shone through the curtain and Byeol stretched her arms towards the ceiling. She awoke to Kim Jong Kook’s song ‘So Pretty’, she noticed the three guys were still siting as they were from when she fell asleep.

“Morning!” Byeol sat up. She could help but to smile at them, she was happy they were still with her.

Blue turned towards her and make an ‘ewwww’ face, “Maybe you should wash up first.”

Byeol didn’t care and smiled at him, “You look handsome!”

Taken back, Blue was left tongue tied.

“You all look handsome today!” She pointed at each one.

Red and Blondie smiled at her.

“Excuse me Oppa,” she was looking at Red.

Red froze and looked at Byeol, “Huh? I mean, yeah.” Red shoved Blue over and gave Byeol room to get up and walk to her room.

“Did she just call you…” Blue was pointing at Red.

“Yeah,” he smiled at Blue.

Byeol had a new outlook on life, she was happy and was determined to find out who the three were. She got ready as quickly as she could.

“Oppa!” Byeol was getting dressed in her room, “I was thinking today that I can help you. I mean if I research and do what I can at the library. I might be able to help you.” She was waiting for a response. “Oppa!!” Byeol leaned towards her doorway. “I’m almost done dressing, but do you think it’s okay? I mean with me helping you?” Still no response she swung the door open. Her iPod was still on shuffle but her mother was sitting on the couch, waiting for Byeol, her arms were crossed.

“Oppa?” her mother sounded furious. “Who did you spend the night with?” She got up and grabbed Byeol’s night light and threw it across the room. “What the hell has you been doing when I’m gone?”

Byeol turned into a statue, she couldn’t believe her mother was home this early.

“Byeol!” her mother was walking towards her, “I come home to change my clothes and I hear you yelling for some guy.” Byeol’s mother grabbed her daughter’s arm, “Where is he?!?”

“Who?” Byeol didn’t know what to say.

“Oppa!!!” her mother was screaming at Byeol, “Aren’t you going to help him with his homework? Is that what you do? He’s using you?!?”

“No,” Byeol was being yanked left and right.

“I don’t have time for this!” her mother was hovering over Byeol, “This needs to stop! Unless you move out of my house! I don’t want you hanging out with your Oppa! Its here, school and straight back here! You hear me!”

“Yes.”

“Now, get going!” Byeol’s mother was pointing to the door.

Byeol’s hair was still wet, she grabbed her iPod from the speakers, grabbed her purse and left out the door. It hadn’t occurred to her that she wasn’t fully wearing her school uniform. It was just a t-shirt and her plaid skirt with flip-flops; she was also missing her school bag. Breathing heavily, she tried to slow it down with each step she took putting distance between her and her mother. When she got down to the bottom, Red was there.

“I’m sorry,” Red looked worried, “We tried to tell you but you were still in the shower. It’s off limits remember?”

Byeol was stood there listening, she shook her head and looked at Blondie who was slowly walking towards her.

“Your mom is crazy,” Blue said calmly. Blue had appeared next to Red.

“It’s not your fault, I was being stupid,” Byeol looked up a Blue.

“No,” Blue stepped towards her, “Your mom needs to chill out.”

“You’re not going to school like that?” Blondie was looking at Byeol’s flip-flops.

Byeol looked down, “No. I don’t even have my bag.”

“When is your mom leaving?” Red looked towards the apartment.

“I don’t know,” Byeol looked up and Red was gone. Byeol’s neighbor Mr. Jung was walking towards her.

“Excuse me?” he smiled at Byeol.

“Oh,” she looked at him and tried to look presentable. “What time is it?”

“Too early to go to school,” he said when a chuckle.

“Yeah...” Byeol looked at her flip-flops again. “I accidentally locked myself out, again.”

“Ah,” Mr. Jung looked at her and knew she was lying, he heard her crazy mom screaming at her, “Well, it’s a little chilly out here. Want to wait in my apartment until the bus comes?”

“No…” Byeol was trying to laugh it off. “I think I’ll get something to eat for breakfast and then walk to school.”

“Are you sure?” Mr. Jung smiled again, “I think your mom is in the shower, she won’t know.”

Byeol’s eyes just about exploded, “What?”

“You can stay at my place until your bus comes. I think my granddaughter left some shoes here that last time she came, they might fit.” Mr. Jung was a good man, he tried his hardest protect Byeol when he had the chance.

“No,” Byeol was faking her laugh, “My mom isn’t home. If she was I’d be up there making breakfast.”

Mr. Jung sighed, “Oh, maybe it was the upstairs neighbors I heard. You know me, I’m so old.” He reached in his pocket and grabbed his wallet. “Well, I don’t want you buying sweets for breakfast, here’s some money to buy something hearty.”

“No!” Byeol was now embarrassed with Mr. Jung’s kindness.

“Don’t ‘no’ me,” Mr. Jung handed Byeol $20, “Take it and eat breakfast. I won’t hear of you eating junk.”

Byeol took her money, “I can pay you back when my grandmother sends me money.”

“What?” Mr. Jung was waving Byeol’s offer away, “I still owe you from watering my plants when I was away visiting my daughter.”

“I only watered once and you already paid me with fixing my bike,” Byeol hated handouts.

“Don’t be silly, your bike just had a flat. If you didn’t water my plants they would have died of thirst.”

“Thank you,” Byeol bowed.

“Now, I’m off to my doctor’s appointment,” Mr. Jung was walking down the street with his cane in hand.

“Wow…” Red was there again, “He’s a nice grandpa.”

“Yeah,” Byeol but the money in her purse.

“What are we going to do now?” Blue was watching the old man walk away further from the apartment building.

“I guess eat,” Byeol starting walking the opposite direction from Mr. Jung. “Then maybe look for a thrift store and buy some shoes that are appropriate.”

Three followed Byeol down the street.
