Separate Paths

Finding the Missing Pieces

Graduation Day

I looked around my bedroom and all I could see were boxes full of photos, old papers, and memories stacked at every corner.

I sighed and opened my closest where my graduation gown rested.

I don't have much time left to do the things that I want to do--

But gradutation day?

I wouldn't miss it for the world.

-------------------

I patinetly waited on the doorsteps of my house, carrying the gown in my arm.

Wooyoung was suppose to be picking me up in a couple of minutes.

The time that was given to me allowed me to think-- Think about how weird it would be to not see all of my friends' faces again;

Not being able to see Sooyoung stuff her face with food, Taeyeon's dorkiness, Wooyoung's stubborness, Jessica's coldness, how Jaejoong would always help me out with my problems, Eunhyuk's urge to flirt with random girls, and--

Miyoung.

"Yo, idiot!"

I looked up to see Taeyeon sticking her tongue out at me from the passengers seat of Wooyoung's car.

"Oh-heey!" I picked myself up and made my towards his car.

I stuttered when I noticed that the only empty seat in the car was the one beside Miyoung.

"Oppa-- Hi!" She smiled.

"Hi," I blushed, opening the car door, "Uh-- so are you ready for graduation day?"

"Mhm! Aigoo~ .."

"What's wrong?"

"I feel old."

We all chuckled at her remark.

The ride to school was full of laughter and reminisces from the past.

"Well, this is it," I rubbed Miyoung's head when we arrived at our destination.

She gave me a reassuring smile, "Fighting!"

----------------------

By the time we entered the school buidling, the seats in the audiotorium were packed.

The only seats that remained empty were the ones for the seniors.

"Good luck, bro!" Wooyoung waved at me before finding his seat.

"See you guys later!" Taeyeon skipped off.

"It's just us two now~" Miyoung giggled.

"Yeah, it is." My cheeks turned rosey, "But you know I won't be there with you when you go up on stage to get your diploma, right?"

"Of course, oppa!"

"Mmm,"

"Remember your promise?" She pulled me in for a hug.

I felt pain in my heart but I managed to pull off a smile.

"I promised, didn't I?" I rested my forhead on her shoulder.

She pulled back and a bright smile drew on her face.

"Thank you oppa."

I nodded and pulled her back in for a hug.

I don't think I have the courage to break the news to you.

"Oppa, we have to take our seats~"

"Ahh, okay~" I let go of her and the both of us went our separate ways.

---------

"Hwang Miyoung~" The announcer called.

The crowd went wild.

I stood up at clapped my hands, everyone followed.

She covered her face with her hand when she walked up on stage. She looked rather worried but when she noticed me giving her a thumps up, a wide smile appeared on her face.

After recieving her diploma, she skipped down the stairs and made her way back to her seat.

"You did great, Miyoung!" I mouthed to her.

She flashed a quick smile before turning back around.

-----------------

"Jang Wooyoung~" The announcer smiled.

"Woo!" I yelled out, clapping my hands.

He stuck his tongue out at me before standing up.

-----------------

"Kim Taeyeon~"

Her short body shakily went up on stage.

She tripped on her own feet and stumbled when she grabbed her diploma.

She looked like a little child. But she managed to flash a cute smile.

As much as we have a love-hate relationship, I found her to be absolutely cute.

"Daebak!!!!!" I yelled out, clapping my hands, "You little choding!!!~~~"

She stuck her tongue out at me and skipped off of the stage.

-----------------

"Lee Donghae~"

"Yah! Donghae!"

"Donghae oppa~~"

"Hyung!"

I blinked my eyes several times and being startled, I jumped up.

"Dude, the announcer called you!"

"Oh, she did?" I laughed.

"Go!" Taeyeon hit me in the back of the neck.

I quickly got up from my seat and fixed my hair.

My eyes widened when I noticed Miyoung standing up from her chair to applaud me.

"Hwaiting!" She smiled.

I smirked at her before I stood up to get my award.

------------------------

The graduation ceremony seemed to blur by fast.

I only paid attention to the names of my friends, but other than that, I found myself falling asleep because I grew bored.

-----------------------

After the ceremony was done, everyone from our group gathered together to take pictures.

"Let's take a picture of the couple!" Taeyeon squealed.

"Yah! What couple?!" I nagged.

I could suddenly feel someone lock their fingers in between mine from behind.

The texture of the hand was smooth and soft, I automatically knew that it was Miyoung's.

"She's talking about me and you, silly," She giggled.

I used my other hand to cover my face because it started to turn pink.

"1...2...3!" Taeyeon smiled.

I felt happy.

But I knew that this happiness would eventually disappear.

"Oppa," She grabbed my hand and placed a camera in it.

"Will you take a picture of us?"

I nodded and grabbed held onto the camera.

My clumsiness caused me to accidentally hit one of the buttons of the device, leading me to a whole photo album of all the pictures she'd taken. My eyes would only widen when I noticed what most of the pictures displayed.

They were all of me;

Pictures of me from nearly a year ago. Pictures of me sleeping. Pictures of me in her pink apron, cooking Kongguksu for her.

Pictures from the day at the lake.

The day of our school trip.

The weekdays she'd come over to my place and study with me.

Every memory of us were documented on her camera.

Even though I never noticed, she's been capturing all of our memories with just a snap of a button.

"Oppa~"

I blinked twice.

"Did you take it yet?"

I shook my head and proceeded on taking the picture.

"1, 2, 3, cheese!" I tried to fake a smile.

My index finger triggered the button and the flash of the camera brightly lightened their faces.

"Thank you, oppa~" She walked up to me and grabbed the device out of my hand.

I gave a fake smirk and her hair.

"Oppa..."

"Mm?"

"What's wrong?" Her soft hand gently placed ontop of the hand her hair.

"N--Nothing's wrong, Miyoung," I feigned a laugh, "Why?"

"You just seem down--"

"Miyoung!"

I turned around and noticed Sooyoung signaling her to come over.

"Oh-- It looks like they need me," She chuckled, "I'll catch up with you later, araso?"

"Yeah, I hope so."

I watched her as she'd run off to the others.

When she disappeared from my sight, my knees began to feel weak and the next thing I knew, they were making contact to the ground.

My heart feels like it's been stabbed a million times by a sharp needle.

No, Hae. You're not going to do this. You're not going to cry.

My vision became a blur as water began to slolwy errupt in my eyes.

Damnit.

Like a girl would, I ran to the bathroom and cried.

"Damnit! I don't want to leave you!" I screamed, pounding my fist against the concrete wall, "I told you I'd be here for you-- Protect you-- Stay here--"

Tears would only seem to burst out of my eyes.

"I don't want to seperate from you! I want to be here with you forever--"

I cried because I'm going to miss her so much.

"I promised you! I promised you that I'd stay by your side--"

Why?
Why do I have to be seperated from her?

It felt like déjà vu all over again;

First, umma got taken away from me.

Then, Yoona.

And now, Miyoung?

It's like whenever I find happiness, it always finds away to slip out of my grasp.

But this time it was different.

Miyoung gave me more than happiness--

She made me feel like I was on top of the world.

I don't think I'll ever find someone like that in America.

No, I know I won't find anyone like Miyoung.

As much as I pounded the wall, the tears just couldn't stop bawling out of my eyes.

Wooyoung

I could hear shouting from the bathroom.

The voice sounded familiar.

Without even hesitating, I ran into the room to find Donghae sobbing in the corner.

"Donghae, what's wrong?" I quickly ran to him.

"I don't have much time--" He hiccupped.

"Yah-- What are you talking about?" I held his shoulders to keep him still.

He pushed me away and covered his face.

His back slid against the wall, allowing him to sit down.

"Tell me what's going on, Hae." I kneeled down.

"I'm leaving--" He took in short breaths.

"Leaving where?" I calmly asked.

"Am--Amer--ica--"

"Woah--Woah woah-- What the hell do you mean your going to America?!"

"My dad--He's forcing me--"

"Damnit," I messed up my hair, "What are you going to do?"

"I don't know--" He cried, "I don't know the hell I'm going to do."

"Yah--" I crossed my arms, "You aren't just going to leave... Right?!"

"I have no choice--"

"Dude!" I raised my voice, "Since when did you listen to your dad?-- Doesn't Miyoung mean anything to you?!"

"She means the world to me--" He wimpered.

"It doesn't look like it."

At that moment, my phone began to vibrate. I quickly looked the text message I just recieved then put it back in my back pocket.

"Hae. It's Miyoung, she's looking for us."

----------------

Donghae

"Ah--" I wiped the tears that were running down my face, "We should get going--"

"Are you going to be okay?"

"Ye--Yeah. I guess so."

He lent a hand out for me to pick me off of my feet and I couldn't refuse his offer.

"Thanks, Wooyoung."

"No problem, buddy."

-------------------------

"Oppa!" Miyoung smiled when she noticed Wooyoung and I both walking out of the room.

"Hey!" I caught up to her and she surprisingly held my hand.

"So what are we going to do?" Wooyoung interrupted.

"Let's go and eat bulgogi!" Sooyoung smiled.

"What?" Yuri grumbled.

"Of course, we've been eating here since we were grade 1! We might as well eat there on our graduation day."

"Araso, araso."

Everyone laughed and we began to leave in separate cars --

Seohyun, Yuri, and Jessica.

Sungmin, Jaejoong, and Sooyoung.

Wooyoung, Miyoung, Taeyeon, and me.

----------------------

"Hey remember all of the times we've visited here during our first year of high school?" Sooyoung laughed, pointing at the front sign.

"I remember!" Taeyeon giggled.

"Remember when--"

I stayed quiet and just listened to everyone's conversation.

"Cheer up," Wooyoung patted my back. I smirked at him and took the seat across from Miyoung and beside Wooyoung.

Time seemed to blur by as they'd talk about past events that happened who knows when.

"Oppa, why are you being so quiet?" Miyoung concernly asked, "What's wrong?"

"N--Nothing, don't worry about me." I pulled off a fake smile.

"You seem down..." Taeyeon joined, "Are you sure nothings wrong?"

I managed to let out a laugh, "I'm positive!"

"Okay then, oppa! You were just worrying me."

I nodded and continued listening to their conversations.

--------------

My phone suddenly vibrated.

From: Channie

Hyung, you better come home right now. Dad's getting angry.

I quickly put my phone back in my pocket and looked up at Miyoung, who smiled as she ate her bulgogi.

Don't stop smiling, Miyoung.

"I have to go," I announced, "I'm sorry."

"Oh-- It's okay!" Taeyeon waved bye, "I'll see you later?"

"Bye, hyung!" Jaejoong smiled.

Wooyoung worriedly looked at me and looked away.

"Bye buddy," He turned back to me and rubbed his eyes.

Everyone bid their goodbye's to me.

All of these faces--

Will I ever see them again?

"Bye oppa!" Miyoung eye-smiled, "I'll talk to you later!"

She surprisingly stood up from her chair and tackled me with a hug.

"Miyoung," I grabbed her hand and placed an envelope in it, "This is for you."

"Donghae oppa, what is this?" She confusingly analyzed it.

Miyoung-Ah, this might be the last time that I'll ever see you again.

"It's my final goodbye."

"Oppa," She laughed, "It's not like I'm not going to see you again~"

I fake smiled at her and tried my best not to break down into tears.

"Don't read it until tomorrow, arasso?"

She nodded.

"Goodbye."

I pulled her in for a tight hug.

That one hug-- Just that hug made me want to hug her forever.

I didn't want to let her go.

"Saranghaeyo," I mumbled in her ear.

I rubbed her head before I exited the store, taking several glances back at her.

She stood still, holding the envelope in her hand, looking at me blankly.

Goodbye, Miyoung. The memories we created--

I'll always cherish them.
