Question #8

K-Pop Audition/Trainee Questions

Hello everyone! Today's question is "If you are European but you look a bit like Asian (Korean let's say), will I or other people have chances to get in (to be a trainee) or is there at least a 1% chance?"

Truthfully, it would have to depend on the company. Some companies (most notably SM, JYP, and YG) don't have plans to debut a foreign group. Therefore, I think your chances drastically decrease if you are looking at those companies. Like I said before, its not whether or not you look Asian but whether or not you are Asian that matters the most.

Its not any sort of racism or xenophobia (well, actually I would argue that xenophobia and nationalism is rampant in South Korea) but its simply not marketable. Korean people like watching people who look like them. Its the same in the U.S. (how many successful Asians can you say there are here in the music industry?).

My own opinion on this (and don't take this the wrong way) but you shouldn't be audition for K-pop companies because you like K-pop, you should be audition for K-pop companies because you like performing and entertaining. The K-pop avenue is for the asians that can't make it big in the U.S. or Europe but they love performing and singing/dancing with all their heart (take Ailee for example).

Now, thats not to say that its impossible. There's that one K-pop group with a French member and she is completely white :3 So yes, there is a chance, but its a rather slim chance.

If you really want to get into those companies that aren't interested in foreigns (SM, JYP, YG, TS, PLEDIS, etc etc), there is always a possibility that you are talented enough, you could become a vocal/dance trainer or choreographer. You might be offered a job in one of the companies if you have enough talent :3

I hope I answered your question well! Thank you and drop a question below if you have one~

Chapter 27: Chapter 27: About Lu Han's casting story: I'm 5 years late but whatever, hello. Just recently I read somewhere that Lu Han was "officially casted" into 2010 SM Casting System or something which really surprised me because I thought he got into SM in 2008? I mean yes, he did audition for JYP in 2008 too, but in China. Also there was some fact about Lay and Lu Han and the reason why they are or rather were so close. Because they got into SM on the same day, if I'm not mistaken, and they grew close. A fact is that Lay got into SM too in 2008 after successfully auditioning in China and then moving to Seoul to be a trainee. The thing about auditioning at JYP is true and not being accepted is true as well, but that doesn't make him a trainee? Yeah, for me, I believe he got into SM and trained for three/four years and I don't really believe that he got casted in SM. It doesn't make any sense being casted in 2008 and signing a contract officially in 2010, I doubt that SM would wait that long, you'd probably have to audition again.

Chapter 18: Hi.... My name is Siang.... So my question is that what is the perfect age for a trainee of JYP Entertainment?? If I don't know Korean language than can I become a K-pop star? Getting to the actual point I can't dance that well so if I auditioned for a trainee in JYP Entertainment, will I get selected for a trainee?

Chapter 40: Hey, I want to be a trainee, but I live in Cali, and JYP's US branch is in New York. If I get in, how do I train there? Because I want to finish school. And also, do you need to attend college to get in? Or not?

Chapter 15: Nah... Hangengs was so many years ago and during that time he earned so little bc he wss the first foreign idol. Nowadays idols like exo or big bang can earn millions. (Correct me if im wrong) i think i read that a new law was made to protect artists and they dont have to pay back to earn money anymore(i think its only for the big 3)
