Relationships in K-pop
K-Pop Audition/Trainee QuestionsTo be quite honest, most companies are actually A-Okay with trainees having relationships with one another. The main issue is during debut, most likely if you are dating someone, then they would ask you to break up with them (Most notable example would probably be EXO -- rumors have circulated that almost all of them have had girlfriends -- if not all of them -- and all of them were asked to break it off with their girlfriends when they were confirmed to debut)
Here in lies the most important issue that K-pop has most likely ever come across: should Idols be allowed to date?
In my opinion, quick and short, yes, they should but they should also do it under their own discretion.
Okay, backing up a little bit...
What groups (age-wise) are most K-pop groups targeted to? Most likely, young pre-teens, teenagers, and older men (when I say older, I genuinely mean like 30-50). Notice the bracket of ages where most people don't really listen to K-pop: their twenties. That's geniuniely because (I personally think anyways) of the fact that in your twenties, you are dating around and don't need K-pop as an escape to be something of a romantic fantasy.
Boy groups are targeted towards the younger teenager/pre-teen bracket of girls. Psychologically, girls are more attracted to men who are older than they are. Also, at that young age, Korean girls (and I guess you could pretty much say Asians around the world) have never had any sort of romantic relationship and K-pop was a way to provide that for them to calm their raging hormones. This is mostly likely why, idols shouldn't really date in view of their fanclubs because their younger fans often see them as sort of a romantic interest and good eye-candy.
Girl groups are targeted mostly towards older men (like those well over the age of 30). Psychologically, older men like younger girls. So, to the older men, girl groups are an escape from their overbearing days at work, their family's problems and so on and so forth. Girl groups are mostly seen as a daughter to these older men -- and everyone knows that hits the fan when fathers find out that their daughters had been dating.
The difference in terms of dating is that girl groups are more off the hook when it comes to reveal that they have been dating. For example, if you guys haven't heard the recent news that L's (from Infinite) fanclubs had been shut down because of a rumor that he had been dating ulzzang Kim Doyeon. News that f(x)'s Sulli was spotted on a date and that T-ara's Soyeon had been dating for 3 years now also circulated -- but did not have the dire consequences that L had with his fanclub shutting down. There, in the most recent news, you can see the difference between male and female idols dating.
So, in conclusion (in my opinion), I don't think that you should date if you are a trainee. I believe you should concentrate on your training and debuting at that part. I mean, you are so close! It would be unwise to get into girlfriend/boyfriend drama then. I also believe, in looking at the best for your popularity, that you should perhaps put off dating as a rookie (undoubtedly, you would lose fans) until you have had a secure fanbase or been in the idol scene for a long time (like 4-5 years).
If you really want to date -- definately keep it on the down-low. And remember the netizens can form almost anything into a relationship. Perhaps you just went out to get a bite to eat after training with a fellow boy band member under the same company. Netizens would think you are dating. Remember, be smart and keep it on the down-low. After all, you don't want something you've been building for ten or more years to suddenly be taken away by an article on Daum.
Be smart guys!
