Smoothyoung's Five Steps To Winning Your Heart

Hey There, Brace Face!

“Double take, double take, Lets go have a triple date!”

Omarion's I Get It In blasted through Choyoung's phone speakers at the highest volume it could possibly make. Grumbling, Choyoung rolled over on her bed and reached out for the lamp table next to her. Who would be calling her so early in the morning? The LED lights on her alarm clock flashed 12:00AM, or at least that's what she could make out from her half-closed eyes. Her ringtone replayed again, making her want to throw it out of the window. Why in the world did she ever let Soonyoung set himself his own caller ringtone? What was so wrong in having the default jingle as the notification sound? The blanket slipped off her shoulders and she pulled it over her head. Sniffling, she pressed the answer button, “Hello?”

“Happy birthday, aegiyah!” Soonyoung chirped from the other end, sounding like he was completely awake. He was lying down horizontally across his bed with his head hanging over the side, staring at his closet, letting the blood rush to his head. The lights were all off in his room except for the butterfly shaped nightlight he had bought in case Choyoung were to sleep over. It glowed a light pink rather than a white because white was too bright. He heard Choyoung giggle on the other side.

Lying back down on her bed, Choyoung closed her eyes and placed her phone next to her ear. A tired smile formed on her face before she lightly coughed into her blanket. The wall next to her was cold and her blankets just weren't enough for her. Her two comforters weren't enough for her. Half-awake, she was only able to mutter a simple “Thank you,”

“Did I wake you up? I'm sorry, I just wanted to be the first one to tell you that,” Soonyoung pouted, changing his tone to an apologetic one. He sprawled out on his bed in the proper sleeping position with half of his blanket on, while the other half was uncovered. It was too cold to keep off but it was too hot to keep on. A simple compromise such as that was perfect. He looked at the empty place on his bed where Choyoung would usually be, “But since you're up anyway, do you want to see what I got you?”

“But it's dark out, I can't suddenly arrive at your house in the middle of the night!”

“No, no! I put it on your night table. Just look,”

Choyoung lifted her head from the fluffy cushion of her pillow and saw a cellophane wrapped basket sitting near the edge of the table. Butterflies started to flutter around in her stomach when she could make out a few of her favorite things wrapped inside. Switching on her red lamp, she slid the basket onto her lap and rubbed her eyes to see better. She heard Soonyoung on the phone once again, “Do you like it?”

“Hold on, I still haven't opened it!” She lied; she was already halfway done with removing the first layer of cellophane. The pink plastic sheets fell onto the floor along with the various red and white ribbons tangled in the mess. She figured that she would clean that later when everyone should be awake. On one of the big ribbons, there was a large square pink sheet with something that looked like a list. It was called: Mr. Smoothyoung's Five Steps To Winning Your Heart. She laughed out loud once she read the title, “Mr. Smoothyoung? Looks like someone's been following Jihoon's footsteps,”

“What can I say? That guy has some pretty good romance tactics,” Soonyoung clicked his tongue, “But come on, hurry up! I want you to see what I got you!”

“Alright, alright, calm down!” Choyoung shook her head, still smiling. She looked at the bolded paragraph on the big card and read it out loud to prove to Soonyoung that she was actually reading his Love List, “Dear Ms. Soon-to-Be Kwon, if you are reading this, then that means you are finally celebrating your fifteenth birthday! Your loving boyfriend has compiled a gift basket made up of special memories, and a few other cute goodies. But before you do anything, you must play according to the Game. Each item corresponds to a number on this list. Have fun, aegiyah!” Her nose wrinkled at the term of endearment.

“Number One. So to start this off, I'll start off with something every girl know about. To find out what this is, find the red and white item that represents unity. Hint: You wore this on your wrist and I wore it on my lapelle,” she started off this game he wanted to play. Soonyoung read along with her, reciting the line. He had spent so many times rewriting the list that he pretty much memorized everything on it. Choyoung grinned knowing exactly what the answer was, “I know what this is!”

Inside the basket were amaryllises that had their stems cut short and were tied up into a small bouquet. Lifting them from the basket, she bit her lip remembering that night. Her cheeks burned as she recalled how she mistook Soonyoung as Chan an accidentally confessed to him. Shaking it off, she decided to look for the and with the number 1 on it, “I will stop loving you when the last flower dies. Eep Soonyoung, that's so corny!”

“But you're blushing, aren't you?” Soonyoung sprung up into a sitting position, a wide grin forming on his face. He could hear Choyoung quietly squeal on the other end. His heart felt like jumping as he laughed, knowing that he had already made Choyoung amused with the first gift, “Yah, did you even see the picture attached?”

Choyoung couldn't help but 'aww' when she saw how their prom picture turned out; Soonyoung was carrying Choyoung bridal style, but that wasn't even the highlight of the picture. What tickled her funny bone was that both of their eyes were literally disappearing into lines and their matching red braces were completely evident because of their wide smiles. Soonyoung had the same picture framed and placed on his desk next to his soccer team picture. Choyoung placed the picture inside her table drawer and went to the next number, “Number Two. The very first time I met you, you were quite a handful but later on, when I got to know you, I realized that you were very sweet. I think it's a really funny coincidence that this happens to be your favorite candy!”

Her eyes immediately caught sight of the familiar yellow and green box; Sour Patch Kids. The card on it read: Eat these carefully, okay? I don't want your adorable braces to get damaged! Despite Soonyoung's protests of her eating candy so early in the morning, she opened the box anyway and popped a red one in . She her cheeks in as the acidic crystals met , “Number Three. Remember our first kiss? Remember how quickly our hearts beat in the garden? That was the day I first realized I had feelings for you. Since then, I decided that only I have permission to make your heart race like that,”

Choyoung picked up a box with the number three written on it. When she realized what it was before even reading the card, she exploded into a laughing fit. She recognized the heart rate watch as the Mio Alpha that she saw on TV commercials. It was a pretty simple watch; grey, and had two functions – measure heart rate and tell time. There were green LED lights that sensed blood under the skin and transmitted it as a heart rate on the watch face. Choyoung put it around her wrist and turned it on, eyes widening the lights flashed, “Oh my gosh, you didn't! This is so cool!”

“Oh yes I did,” Soonyoung chuckled, “In fact, I have my own because I thought it was really cool too,”

“It's so cool, I love it!” Choyoung repeated once more for lack of any other descriptive words, continuing to admire the new gadget, “It's like a heart rate monitor only, it doesn't make beeping noises!”

"Exactly what I was going for," he smiled, recalling when he was in the hospital a few months ago. That heart rate monitor was a real pain in those days, “Go on, read the next one!”

Choyoung picked up the card once more, “Number Four. We're almost there, but no birthday is complete without this certain character! I remember the first day that I slept without you after that one week you stayed with me. It was never the same. But I couldn't help but think of you, so I decided to get you this. Whenever I'm not there with you, this guy will be there to watch over you,”

There were only two things left in the basket and with number four on it was a classic brown teddy bear, round and was pretty much circular. The stitched dark brown nose was a triangle, but had rounded edges complete with beady black eyes. On the clean white stomach of the bear was a red heart beat line and a pink heart on the left. There was a matching red bow on it's left ear and tied to it's arm was another card that read: I wish I was a teddy bear, that lay upon your bed, so every time you cuddled it, you cuddled me instead.

“Aww, that's adorable,” Choyoung giggled and bounced the teddy on her lap, playing around with it. She made the bear cover it's eyes and even added a few cute growling noises. Soonyoung definitely put some thought into writing those messages and each and every one of them hit her right in the feels. She was really happy with the bear he had given her too. She didn't have many stuffed animals because her parents didn't like the idea of them just sitting around her room to collect dust. She always told them that she would take good care of them, but that didn't seem to change their opinion of the soft toys. In listening to the sounds she was making on the speaker, Soonyoung could only imagine how Choyoung was playing with the bear.

“Number Five. This last one isn't just one thing, but many things. In the seven months that I have known you, I can't help but feel that I've known you for much longer. So finally, inside this jar contains 101 reasons why I love you, and what I love about you,” Choyoung's voice cracked at the very end while she clutched the jar in her hand. Soonyoung recited it along with her, closing his eyes remembering each and every one of the things he had written. They weren't things that he had just searched up on the Internet, he really did dig deep down to make it a genuine present.

Soonyoung cleared his throat, “Are you tired yet Choyoung?”

“Yeah, a little bit,” Choyoung started to pile together the cellophane wrap and ribbons, and then putting her gifts on top of her desk to put away later. She left the jar on her lamp table and looked at it, “But I want to stay up and read every one of them,”

“How about this? I memorized every single one of them by heart, and I'll recite them for you while you try to sleep,” Soonyoung suggested, laying down on his back to stare up at the ceiling. By now, he had put his phone on speaker and placed it next to his pillow. He lowered the volume so that he wouldn't be disturbing his parents in the other room. He was glad when Choyoung agreed, and reassured he r that he wouldnt' get mad if she went to sleep.

Closing her eyes once more, Choyoung pulled the blanket up to her chin and hugged her new teddy bear. It was soft and the material felt nice against her skin. It wasn't exactly Soonyoung but it was pretty darn close. Placing her phone next to her pillow, she got herself comfortable to go to sleep, “Alright Soonyoung, I'm ready,”

“I love you because you're cute when you're mad,” This earned a him a giggle.

“I love you because you give awesome kisses!”

“I love you because you put up with me when I'm in a bad mood,”

“I love you because you agree to watch and play soccer with me,”

“I love you because you're very fragrant, like oranges,” It was a public secret that Soonyoung liked girls who smelled nice, “Even though you say you don't like oranges,”

“I love it when you smile because I get to see your train tracked teeth,”

“I love it when you tell me you will never call me 'oppa'. It makes me want to double my effort to make you call me that one day,”

“I love it when you get flustered whenever I play Don Juan, especially when we're sleeping in the same room,”

“I love it when you give me hugs, even though you don't like hugging either,”

Soonyoung continued to go down the list, each one having a different tone and a different memory attached to it. Choyoung was able to recognize a few that were inside jokes but she couldn't really comment because of the energy being out of her by her mattress. Her lids grew heavier and heavier per reason as Soonyoung rambled on. The last thing she heard before completely blanking out was, “I love you most ardently because you're you,”

“Here comes the birthday girl!” Mrs. Kwon announced once she saw Choyoung drag herself down the stairs. In her arms, she had her blanket, and pillow for the next car ride they were going on. The Kwons and Kwans decided that they would all go hiking for her birthday. And of course, Jihoon and Bee wanted to tag along. They were going to be staying there for a couple of days, but Soonyoung was a bit concerned because he heard from Saron, Chan's sister, that they were going to be hiking in the same area as well. He thought he had already gotten rid of Chan at the other camp site. It wasn't exactly a camp site, though there were cabins for those who wanted to go overnight. It wasn't as extensive as the previous campsite they went to though. There were actual fire pits, and camp advisers who had programs planned for large groups.

“Happy birthday, Choyoung!” The rest of them greeted, pulling Choyoung into one big bear hug while she squirmed in their embrace. Bee took the blanket and pillow from Choyoung and replaced it with a glittery bag and a poorly box, “Choyoung, this is from Jihoon and me. I hope you like it!”

“Actually, the box is mine. The bag is hers,” Jihoon clarified, wanting to make sure that Choyoung didn't think they went shopping together or anything. Besides, he actually took some time and effort into looking for a present. He didn't want Bee to be taking all the credit. Bee rolled her eyes, “Whatever. Open them in the car okay?”

“Sure, no problem,”

Like the previous trip, the way there was pretty much the same. Sleeping, eating, reading, playing Punch Buggy, sleeping some more, and playing games on their phones. They kept the same room arrangements but this time, Jihoon was the one to unlock the bedroom door without any help. And he was proud of it. They had enough time to take a quick nap and eat lunch before the first hiking program would start. Actually, the four kids had an entire hour to spend doing whatever they wanted until they had to meet up with their parents to go on the hiking tour.

“Hey Soonyoung, Jihoon!” the two boys saw Saron waving at them from a few rooms ahead of them. Soonyoung waved back, reminding Choyoung that Saron was running for president for next year and that she should vote for her. Saron was already the president for this year. Choyoung nodded and smiled at the older girl. She really did look like Chan's sister. Saron was already dressed up in her hiking clothes and was dragging around her hiking bag on the ground behind her. When she got to the little group. Jihoon stuffed his hands in his pockets, stepping back to check her out, “Do you believe in love at first sight, or do I need to walk by again?”

Bee elbowed him hard in the rib cage, trying to keep a friendly smile on her face at Saron who merely laughed, “Sorry Jihoon, as tempting as that offer sounds, I already have a boyfriend,”

“Whoa what? Who?” Jihoon raised an eyebrow; how come he didn't know of this? He was always the first one to know the 401 on anything dating or relationships related in their grade! In fact, even Soonyoung was surprised. Saron nodded, pulling her phone out of her pocket. She pulled up a picture of her and one of the third year students, or to be more exact, the third year class president, “Jang Doyoon oppa,”

“Oh oppa? I see how it is,” the younger boy pretended to be offended by clutching his heart, “If that's what you really want, Lee Saron, then I'll just have to let you go and allow you to be happy,”

“Oh Jihoon, you're always so melodramatic,” Saron rolled her eyes. Turning to Choyoung, she held out her hand, “Anyways, nice to finally meet you, Choyoung. I've heard a lot about you from Chan. You're science partners, correct?” She shook Bee's hand as well.

“Yes, that's right,” Choyoung sweetly smiled at Saron. She couldn't believe how honeyed the older girl's voice was. It was so kind, gentle, and soft. Unlike Chan's loud, choppy Korean. She quickly glanced up at Soonyoung who managed to pry his eyes away from her just in time, then biting the inside of his cheek. She could tell he was getting jealous once again; he did this every time Chan was ever mentioned in a conversation. Saron giggled at the two, noticing how they were acting, “Haha if you don't mind my asking, are you two dating?”

Soonyoung rubbed the back of his neck shyly, “It's not really -”

“Oh just spit it out already,” Jihoon into the conversation, “Saron, these two over here like each other but they're not dating just yet. They're kind of preparing for the dating stage, if you will. But don't tell anyone, they're not ready to announce it yet,”

Saron's mouth formed into a small 'o' as she nodded. Holding her pointer and thumb together into a circle shape, she pretended to zip her lips, “Don't worry, I won't even breathe anything about this,”

“So Saron unnie, are you going on the hiking program too?” Bee asked.

“Oh yeah, I am. It was Chan who wanted to do it actually,” Saron placed her hands on her hips, shaking her head. Soonyoung exchanged worried glances with Jihoon when Saron was looking down at the ground. She sighed, “Shame, I really wanted to be playing with the insects too,”

Soonyoung had no idea which was worse. The fact that she liked playing with insects, or that Chan was going to be on the hiking program with them.

author's note : so here is another uneventful, “talk more than do anything” chapter, but believe me! there is a reason to my madness! anyway, i really wanted to update a chapter about choyoung's birthday on soonyoung's birthday. i don't know, i just thought it would be pretty amusing ( to me anyway). i also apologize that i've been making a lot of grammar errors. my ms office trial expired on my new laptop and i'm looking around to see where to buy a cheap version of ms office 2013 since win8 only allows mso13. for now, i've been writing on open office but it doesn't check for grammar mistakes. only spelling. /cries.

happy seventeenth birthday to our crazy vitamin, kwon soonyoung! he started as my bias and well...is still my bias. this multi-talented leader of jackson 7 is truly blessed and is one of the few humble idols out there. always acknowledging those with more experience than him, watching out for pd-nims, and respecting the older members. he's always there to support the other members, but he also does many things for the fans. pretends to feed us, troll with us, and yes, this chubby cheeked boy is quite the camwhore. although, i find it so hard to find any hq pictures of him ;~; also, let's not forget that he's in so many ships that i can't even remember more than half of them. i'm just going to leave a list of all my ships that will forever keep sailing right here:  #soonchanhoon4lyf #soonhoon #soonchan #soonming #soonseok #dumbmic #wonyoung #soonsol #sooncheol

so yes. that is my little appreciation message about soonyoung. i'm planning on writing a brief oneshot or something for his birthday but i'm not sure if i'll even get around to writing it with all the other chapters i have to outline and write. i'll try my best in doing so. anyways, i have another four hours to kill before the guerrilla broadcast so i think i'll just take a nap. it's like 11PM here and i have things to do in the morning. how many of you guys are going to be watching? if you are, i'll see you guys there!
