Chapter 12
Paperless DiariesChanyeol:
Baekhyun was using his cell phone as a flash light. He groaned in annoyance whenever the timer would dim the light and he would have to stop and turn it back on. "So you're interested in astronomy?", he asked.
"Yeah, I love stargazing and the universe amazes me. I'm actually doing a research project for an online class about conflicting theories that speculate if the universe really is never-ending or if it's something that's part of a whole."
"I see."
We walked in silence a few minutes more. I couldn't help but notice how tired he looked, his steps slow and lazy, very different from his usual gait. I'd become so used to his determined attitude that always had a purpose and a plan. To see him slumped and worn out worried me.
"Are you feeling alright?"
"Hm?" He blinked and tilted his head. "Yeah, I feel fine, why?"
"You seem tired."
"Well it is-", he shone the light of the screen in his eyes a moment to check the time. "Nearly midnight. On a typical night I'm in bed by 9:30."
I chewed on the inside of my cheek. I've been ruining his sleep schedule this whole time. "You should have said something before!"
The light disappeared once again as the dimming timer clicked off and we were left in the dark as he fumbled with his phone.
"Hmph!"
Light.
I saw him on the sidewalk ontop of an other boy, his hands on either side of the opposite's head. He looked flustered and scrambled to his feet, dusting his hands and elbows off. His knees are skinned. I suddenly felt very angry, ready to lecture the two about being careful; that is until I'd seen Kai. He appeared to be angst about something.
"Kai?! What are you doing out here? Don't you have practice tonight?"
He scritched at his scalp. "Err... It ended early today because our teacher wasn't feeling too great."
"Still, what are you out here for?"
Baekhyun had taken place behind me and remained quiet during the conversation, back to his shy and reserved self.
"Ahh... I don't know. I kind of wanted to see.. Uh..." He waved for my ear. I leaned forward. "I wanted to see that Kyungsoo kid. He wasn't there today.", he whispered.
I scoffed. "You know where he lives?"
"That's a story for an other time, who's this?"
I straightened my back and held out a hand for Kai to take as I helped him off of the ground. We made our way toward the nearest street light and stood beneath it.
"This is Baekhyun. My new best friend." Gleaming in pride, I slipped my arm around his shoulder and pulled him against me. "He just doesn't know it yet."
Kai's lips sputtered and he giggled, his eyes turning up in amusement. "Poor kid. Hey, you better run while you can! He's crazy!"
I pushed Kai's shoulder. "You're rude!"
"Sorry, I'm Kim Jongin. Most people call me Kai. Sorry about the tumble. This goofy guy here is my Hyung. We go way back." He covered his mouth with his hand and said something into his ear.
Ugh. He's doing that on purpose to make me angry. That brat!
"Yah! No secrets, will you?"
I swatted at him and pushed him off of Baekhyun, feeling possessive.
"Anyway, your beloved Kyungsoo is sick."
"Wait, he's sick? You saw him? I'm confused."
"We just came from his house, he and Baekhyun are friends."
"Oh... Is he alright?"
"He's fine, I wouldn't go see him now though, at this hour? You weirdo. Go back home.", I .
He sneered at me. "Ugh. Well the big, tall bully here demands I return back to my base instead of seeing an ill friend in peril. I guess I'll see you around, Shorty."
We watched Kai take his leave, and I sensed the tension loosen once he was out of sight.
"How old are you if you're his hyung?"
I stared at Baekhyun a great while before answering. "Umm... I was born in November of '92."
"That means I'm older than you are."
An intimidating grin spread across his face and he started walking, regaining his determined stride.
"You should start calling me Hyung!"
Ack!
