Chapter 2
Paperless DiariesChanyeol:
"You can head home now if you'd like, Chanyeol-ah." I gave a quick bow and thanked my boss. Her kindness was always distributed in excess.
"Yes, Ma'am. Call me if you need me for anything. I'll come running." I flashed a grin and a wink before flicking my wrist to signal departure.
As I stepped out into the world I checked the time on my wristwatch. 9:30. "Damnit. I bet I'm too late again."
The library was always closed by 9:00 but I decided it wouldn't hurt to stop by and check anyway.
I squinted my eyes and peered down the block towards the library. The lights were bright and still blazing.
"Yes!"
I threw my fist into the air and began jogging down the street. I was halfway there when those little flames of life sputtered to a deep slumber.
"No!"
I stopped in the middle of the road and a vehicle swerved around me, blaring it's horn. "Get out of the road you maniac!" Oops. I could still check... Maybe the employee who closes is nice and will let me look for a minute or two. I shrugged and approached the building.
The doors were silent as I pushed on them, similar to those who occupy the library itself. I saw a figure moving along the wall, one arm outstretched toward the books. As I got closer I could see a few more details I was unable to perceive before. My eyes made out a thin, shorter male, seemingly hunched over in a timid pose against the bookshelves. He almost looked as if he were using the books to tell where he was.
I reached out and pressed a hand against one of the books. When his fingers touched my hand he stopped, looking startled. I didn't want to scare him so I wrapped my fingers around his wrist gingerly. His body jolted and he started to fall backwards. To prevent his further descent that would have inevitably had him on the floor, I slipped an arm around his waist and steadied the shocked boy.
His hair smelled like lavender.
I could feel his body trembling in fear and decided to let his waist loose. "Er... Sorry. I didn't mean to frighten you. I was wanting to look for a book but it was closed..."
A shaky voice erupted from the smaller body infront of me. "Then why did you come in anyway and sneak around like a criminal?"
I dropped his wrist as I managed to locate a switchbox in the dark not far from where we were standing. My fingers fumbled around for the switch and the library was illuminated. "That's better." I smiled, feeling relieved.
"Yes, so can you please leave? It is after hours and the library is closed."
Ugh... I blew it. "I'm really sorry that I frightened you. I see that you're upset with me. I suppose I'll be leaving now."
I reached for the switch again but before I could flip it he shouted. "Wait!" Desperation was evident in his voice and I turned to him, waiting for an explanation. "Could you... Maybe wait until I'm out first to do that? I can't... See in the dark at all."
I blinked. "Ahh... Right. No problem."
As soon as I said this he spun on his heels and was running to the door. He was gone before I could object to anything.
What an odd person...
