CHAP 25: SURPRISE……

It had been a few months since Kevin started to help Jaeseop sleep. The process was going pretty well, except for one problem. Although Jaeseop had been sleeping with Kevin every night and the number of his nightmares was reduced, Jaeseop still woke up in the midnight at least once. Jaeseop and Kevin had decided that they wouldn’t tell Kiseop until they completely succeeded.

Unfortunately, this state had been remained unchanged for weeks. Kevin really didn’t understand. Jaeseop and he had been trying their best. Why didn’t his nightmare completely stopped? Kevin was angry with that but he couldn’t do anything. Every night he just woke up before Jaeseop did to prepare a cup of water and a wet tower for him. Every night he just observed Jaeseop then let out heavy sigh thinking about what he had missed. Every night he just came up with one conclusion after considering everything. Jaeseop needed Kiseop more than him.    

About Jaeseop, he knew the reason for all of this too well. As he had thought, Kevin’s warmth was the main factor. He could sleep because of it. And he woke up because of it as well. But knowing it didn’t mean he could do anything to solve this. It wasn’t something he could control. So he just let it be this way which he considered as the best solution to this.

Tonight was like every other night, or at least it seemed so. Jaeseop went to sleep with Kevin next to him. He shifted his body so that his back was facing Kevin now. Shutting his eyes tightly, he tried to convince himself that it was already late, almost 10 p.m. The day had passed silently and Kiseop had forgotten about it. But he couldn’t believe it. Kiseop never forgot this day! How could he now? The thought hurt Jaeseop quite much so he decided to ignore it. Turning around, he found out that Kevin had already felt asleep. It was a normal thing for him now. He knew that Kevin slept this quick because he had to wake up later to take care of him. And Kevin definitely didn’t want him to see his extremely sleepy face. Sometimes Jaeseop wondered what he had done to had such a caring friend. Smiling slightly, he held the other in his embrace.

“Kevin, today is my birthday.” Jaeseop swallowed his words. He didn’t want Kevin to know about this since Kevin had done a lot for him now.

“Kiseop never forgot it but now he does. I’m pretty upset about it. Although my parents have given me a present, I still need his most…” he continued pouring his emotions out to the unconscious Kevin knowing that the other couldn’t hear since he slept really soundly.

Jaeseop sighed deeply again then shook the thought out of his head. Allowing Kevin’s scent to invade his mind, he slowly drifted off to his sleep.

In front of the gate to the school dormitory, a boy was carrying many things at a time. It was Kiseop. He difficultly ran to the old male guard. Today was Jaeseop’s birthday. These past few years, he always held a small party for Jaeseop. And so did this year. But the problem was he had no money! So this afternoon when the school finished, he found a quick job to make some money. Unfortunately, the work lasted longer than he thought. So here he was now. It was already late. He wasn’t afraid that Jaeseop was sleeping because he never did. Kiseop knew that well. But he was afraid that he might annoy the guard and disturb Kevin’s nice sleep. On the other hand, Kiseop was quite sure that the guard would let him in and Kevin would be happy if three of them spent a night together. Catching his breath, he stopped in front of the guard and bowed.

“Good evening, Uncle Kim.” Kiseop greeted with his courteous tone.

“Oh, Kiseop. Why are you coming so late?” the guard said friendly.

“Today is Jaeseop’s birthday, you know.” Kiseop started.

“Of course, I know. You always held birthday party for him every year.” The guard chuckled.

“But not in the evening.” He added.

“Yeah. I have some work today. Please let me in. I don’t want Jaeseop to be upset. Please Uncle Kim.” Kiseop pleaded.

“Okay. Let me help you.” The old man said taking some bags from Kiseop’s hands.

“I really don’t know how to thank you.” Kiseop said in a low voice feeling he was so lucky to have such kind acquaintances.

“You have helped me a lot already.” The guard said ruffling Kiseop’s hair with his free hand.

They walked to Jaeseop’s room silently. Kiseop was too excited about what would happen next to find some subjects to talk with the other. And the old man was secretly smiling. Kiseop always warmed his heart by just a simple manner. Many people said that everything had its own cost. He believed that this theory was true. It wasn’t natural that he felt warm when being with Kiseop. The boy always tried his best to help others when he himself needed help too. His attempts earned him an incredibly warm atmosphere around him. And that made other people trust and admire him so much that they could do anything to help him back. Kiseop even deserved more than that, didn’t he?

“Here we are.” The guard voiced out suddenly making Kiseop almost fall.

The old man chuckled tenderly at Kiseop’s clumsiness then handed the boy his bags.

“Would you like me to unlock the door for you? So it may surprise Jaeseop.” He suggested receiving an immediate nod from Kiseop.

“I’ll leave you then. Have fun tonight.” He said after unlocking the door.

Afterwards the guard waved at Kiseop then left. Kiseop said his ‘goodbye’ quietly not being able to wave back because of the bags.

Kiseop managed to open the door with his free fingers. He pushed it lightly not wanting to make any noise. The sight greeting him made him stop dead in his track. He couldn’t believe in his eyes anymore. He had expected that Kevin was sleeping in his bed and on the opposite side of the room Jaeseop was lying looking out the window. But what he was watching now was completely contrary. Jaeseop and Kevin were sleeping in each other’s arm in the same bed! The room was really quiet. There was only the sound of their steady breaths. The space that didn’t seem to exist between them knocked Kiseop down as he dropped the bags in his hands causing loud thud to echo through the room. 

The sleeping boys startled at the sound sitting up immediately. Feeling dizzy for sitting up so quickly, Kevin dropped his head backward to Jaeseop’s chest.

“What’s wrong, Kev?” Jaeseop asked concernedly as he held Kevin’s shoulders.

“I just felt a little dizzy.” Kevin answered rubbing his forehead.

“Why don’t you go back to sleep?” Jaeseop suggested giving the other’s shoulder a squeeze then pushed him back to the bed.

“Oh, did you hear any sound?” Kevin asked remembering why they woke up.

“I forgot about it!” Jaeseop said slapping his own head.

They both turned to the door to see a shocking Kiseop. Some bags were around his feet. Kiseop couldn’t process what had just happened in front of his eyes. His friends looked just like a loving couple, sleeping in each other’s embrace, caring about each other so much that they almost forgot about other things around. He didn’t really know what he was feeling right now. Was it happiness for Jaeseop’s sleep? Or was it jealousy for the intimate sight? Maybe it was the combination of them both. And he didn’t know whether that feeling was bad or not either. Anyway good or bad, it drove him insane.
