“I just have to get away…”
Flashback:
“It was a normal afternoon. I was at home eating lunch with mom and dad. Luckily, my algebra teacher told us to go home and learn for the math exam but of course food won over my course book and I preferred sitting with my parents and talking about the neighbour’s cat or about politics than learning I don’t know what new formula. I didn’t understand it anyway and outside was such a nice day. It was a pity to spend it at home. I just had to wait for my little brother to come back from his basketball practice and we could just go in the park at our own secret place and maybe play some silly games. Even if I was 18 already I loved to run around catching balls, climbing in the trees or wrestling my brother. He loved it too. We were not perfect but we were a family. How would I have known that that day will change everything.
I had just finished eating when the clock pointed 3pm. I was already starting to get worried. I knew my brother liked basketball but he promised me to be home before 2 and half and he never broke his promises. I was just about to go to look for him when I heard screams in the backyard. My parents had never fought at least not when could hear them so I went to see what was wrong. To my surprise I saw 3 men wearing black suits and dark glasses. One of them, a tall guy with dark blue eyes, was one step ahead facing my mom. I couldn’t hear very well what they were talking about but my mother seemed really scared. Just then they all noticed my presence and the commotion started. My father tried to punch one of the men but then the others took out their guns and pointed them at my dad. I could only hear my mother’s screams telling me to run as fast as I can but my body froze when I saw those blue eyes staring at me. Such a strange feeling came to me at that moment. I wasn’t scared. It was just like an odd déjà vu. Somehow I just knew I will never be able to forget those eyes.
Out of the nowhere, the silence was disturbed by a little squeak coming from the front door. My brother was finally home. I saw the other 2 men turning around and I knew that they were going after him. My heart just stopped when I saw one of them charging his gun. It took me just 2 seconds to grab my brother’s arm and run outside. I can still remember his shaky voice ‘What happened noona?? Where are we going??’ I was in such a mess. How could I have answered him when even I didn’t know what was going on but I somehow I just knew I wanted to be away. I kept praying it was just a dream. I couldn’t even face him. All I did was run and run and respond to his whinings by holding his hand tighter each time I heard him ’Just a bit more Hyung Joon, just a bit more’. Suddenly my greatest fear came true ‘BOOM’!! and then I stopped… “
