CHAPTER 14
SAILBOATS
The reflection in the mirror gave Kyungsoo quite a shock. His hair was a mess. The bags under his eyes were obviously visible and dark. His cheeks looked sunken. His lips were a little chapped as well. He hadn’t been sleeping all night after that terrifying nightmare. He couldn’t stop worrying for Chanyeol.
He couldn’t care less about how he looked. He drove his hands into the running water under the tap and washed his face. He combed his hair a few times and got changed for class.
The walk to class that day seemed longer than any other day. He felt like he was dragging his heavy legs. His backpack felt heavier too. Or maybe he was just too tired. Kyungsoo couldn’t decide.
After a class or two, there was one thing that Kyungsoo was sure of. He couldn’t pay any attention in class. Chanyeol was running around in his mind all day. Kyungsoo clutched his head as if fearing that it might fall apart.
He needed answers. If this went on any longer, he’d go crazy. During the break between classes, he headed down to his usual spot – his favourite café.
This time, he ordered something cold. He felt like he needed something to cool down his mind. And a hot coffee just wouldn’t do. He found himself a comfortable seat at the corner of the shop and took out his cellphone. He punched in Chanyeol’s phone number and called. He hoped that this time, his best friend would pick up the phone and stopped giving him the silent treatment.
But again, the line couldn’t go through. It was as if the phone was shut off or the number had disappeared.
But Kyungsoo didn’t feel like giving up that morning. He scrolled through the contact list in his phone. And soon, he found the number to Chanyeol’s house. Feeling full of hope, he pressed ‘call’.
Beep…beep…beep…
“Come on, pick up, pick up,” Kyungsoo muttered under his breath.
Suddenly, he heard a click and the line went through. But it wasn’t the voice he had hoped to hear.
“Kyungsoo,” her voice sounded familiar, “Is that you?”
It took Kyungsoo a moment to realize that
