The Choice
Breathless
Two papers are here in front of me.
The other brought happiness.
The other brought sadness.
And whenever I look at the other, I can’t help but to get teary.
“Sandy come on! Shut it!” I looked at Candy who has been looking at me. I ignored her.
“Stop it ok! I am not used seeing you like that!” we are inside a coffee shop. I met her because I needed someone to talk to.
“Ji, it should have been you I’ve fallen for.” And my voice cracked.
“Come on! Don’t cry! And hul! Do you want me to pull off your hair!? What are you talking about you emo!” I wasn’t able to laugh. It feels as if my heart is covered with a thick blanket surrounded by too much sadness.
My whole world is so dull.
I gazed at the two papers again.
The other one is the employment contract.
The other one is the annulment paper.
She sent the annulment papers immediately. I just knew that she came that night to get some of her things and she left thereafter.
I do not know where she stayed.
Since that night, we didn’t see each other.
The only communication we had is this annulment paper she couriered.
“What will I do Candy?” I feel so frustrated.
“I can’t answer that one Dara. Even if I’m in your shoe, I would be torn too. I know how badly you wanted that work. You earned it the hard way. You gave in a lot of both sweat and blood just to get there. But try to flip the coin! My god Dara! Chaerin just can’t be found anywhere!”
“Candy…”
“Know what? I think you need to rest. Get a vacation, think about it. You might be enlightened. Like Buddha!” and she laughed hard.
“Kidding aside dear, you’ll have to decide for it very well. I know it would be hard, but it’s a decision you have to make. And I know that whatever decision you’ll make, you can get through it. That’s how strong you are.”
I just looked at her and nodded.
That’s why I am here today just sitting at a bench watching the waves roll beneath the rocks below the clear blue skies.
I followed her advice.
