Not Alone
Same old "My Best Friend" StoryIt’s been a week since Jessica had her accident. She’s been stable throughout, except for the convulsing episodes the first and second day of the operation. I was allowed to take the leave from the hospital since I have my own health issue going on and I am the only “family” of Jessica. Both of Jessica’s parents are in the states and her “fiancé” is no where to be seen, which I am secretly thankful. I don’t know what happened between Jessica and TaeYeon but I hope she won’t bother Jessica for good now.
It’s also been a week since I went home that’s why Jessica’s doctors, who are also our friends, kept reassuring me that she’ll be okay and I should go home to at least have a few hours of rest. I still refuse to leave her side. I only ask them to get me and Jessica the things I need from home. Today is just another day of them, persuading me to get some rest.
“I swear I won’t leave her side. Not even a second.” Sunny begged. She kept telling me that she’d take over while I get a nap in mine and Jessica’s house.
“I understand you guys, thank you. But no, I won’t.” I persisted.
“Fany unnie, you are a doctor too. You know she’s alright and what you’re doing to yourself is not healthy.” SeoHyun or also known as Dr. Seo, tried to convince me once again. I am older than her but she’s just wiser than me.
“SeoHyun-ah, I am okay. Ok?” I lied to her.
“Fany, you’ve been camping out here all week. You haven’t left that chair except when you go to the toilet. You’ve been sleeping, NO my mistake, you haven’t been sleeping, you were just taking naps. You also haven’t eaten proper food. You drink 8 cups of coffee a day like it’s the most normal thing to do.” Now it’s Yuri’s turn to scold me.
I wasn’t annoyed at her blurting at all, for I know she was just saying the truth and she’s just completely concerned.
I gave her a smile showing my gratefulness to them.
“Well we usually drink 5 cups of coffee when we’re on our shift. What is three more cups?” I teased back.
“Ah that only happens when we have a 48 hours straight shift.” Sunny reasoned.
“Well I am on my shift too.” I joked once again. Finally I made them smile. They know they won’t win against me.
“You won’t listen to us, will you?” Yuri asked sipping her cup of coffee.
“Glad you know.”I let out a chuckle “What are you doing here anyway? Don’t you have patients to attend to?”
“Are you trying to get rid of us?”
“You’re really a smart one Sunny!” I teased them once again. No matter how worried I am, these people just know how to make me forget it even just for a bit.
“No way I’m leaving you here. You’re minutes away from collapsing due to exhaustion.” Yuri said with sarcasm.
“You’re exaggerating things Yuri, I’ll be fine.”
“Ok. Fine. But can you please just eat something?” Yuri pleaded.
“Alright fine, who wants pizza?” I asked with enthusiasm.
My enthusiasm must have been convinced three of them that I am ok, they grinned as Sunny took out her phone and dialed for a delivery immediately. While they were busy bickering about what flavor and what other else to order, I looked at Jessica and smiled. I took her hand and slowly pulled it towards my lips, then kissed her hand.
“I miss you Jessi” I whispered to her hand.
I positioned her hand on her stomach still holding her hand while I rested my head on the bed, making my free hand as my pillow.
I didn’t know that I feel asleep, but I was awaken by a hand that is softly my hair. I didn’t know how long I’ve slept but my eyes are falling back to a close again. I must really be tired but I realized something, I suddenly froze. This touch feels so familiar. Only one person does this before I sleep, she does this when she wants me to fall asleep as soon as possible, she also does this in the middle of the night to soothe me when she knows that I had a long and stressful day, only one person, and that is, Jessica.
It feels amazing, I stayed like this for few more blissful seconds before a flood of tears went rushing down my eyes already. I know this, this familiar touch, Jessica. Is she awake?
“Tiffany, are you crying because we didn’t wake you up for pizza? We have a perfect explanation for that.” Sunny joked and I heard laughter from the rest of my friends. I haven’t heard them laugh aloud since Jessica’s accident. I know I’ve been dragging them to my misery that’s why I am just thankful to have sympathizing and understanding friends like them. There must be something good that happened while I dozed off.
