Chapter Five

Not So Lonely Island

Chapter Five

Blinking her eyes repeatedly, Yuri stared at the mess outside of their hut. It was a miracle that their hut itself did not get destroyed, for it seemed like everything else did. Jessica squeezed Yuri's hand lightly and pointed to the shore, eyes widenening.

"Yuri..." She trailed off, staring at what seemed to be tons of fish on the shore.

"Looks like we're eating fish for today," Yuri mumbled, taking one step towards the shore before stopping, "Or should I say for the rest of the week." She let out a weak chuckle, unsure of what to make of the scene in front of her. Fish scattered upon the shore as if someone had laid them there, coconuts were hidden amongst the fish. Branches of all sizes were all around.

"The suitcases!" Jessica suddenly exclaimed and it made Yuri tear her eyes away from the beach and to the spot the suitcases once were. Jessica looked around panickedly, "We.. We lost them."

Yuri's eyes focused in on something in the far distance, a black box, lots of boxes, different colors. Her eyes widened in realization, "They're in the water."

Without a second thought, Yuri took off and ran down the shore, stepping between the small spaces left open by the fishes, ready to swim for the suitcases. Jessica was hot on her trail and as soon as she got close enough to Yuri, she grabbed her hand and pulled her back, "Don't!"

"What are you doing, Jessica? Let me go so I can get the suitcases!" Yuri tried to pry Jessica's grip off, "They're going to drift farther away, Jessica, let go!"

The blonde girl shook her head, "They're already too far, Yuri."

"And they're going to get farther if you don't let go," Yuri clenched her jaw and shoved Jessica to the side but the girl grabbed onto her again, arms wrapping around Yuri's waist from behind.

"If you go out there and try to get the suitcases," Jessica's voice was loud in comparison to the distant chirping of birds in the early morning, "You can get lost in the ocean, carried out by a wave," She stated, trembling, "And I'll be stuck here alone,"

"I don't want to be alone." Jessica whispered and Yuri's motivation to get the suitcases was gone in a flash as she turned around and hugged the girl. The blonde girl trembled in Yuri's hold, her hands weakly clutching the sides of Yuri's tanktop. Leaning out, Yuri unconciously gave Jessica forehead a light kiss.

"I won't leave you," Yuri smiled before scrunching up her nose, "These fish are starting to smell really bad," She commented, "Let's take some and cook it before it rots."

Yuri reached over and grabbed hold of Jessica's wrist, stopping the girl from eating the fish, "Hey, are you just playing dumb?" She asked, plucking out the sharp bones from the chunk of fish Jessica had, "Did you plan on eating the bones too?"

Jessica lowered her head in embarassment and mumbled a small, "Thanks," Before eating the fish, boneless.

The younger girl examined her for a moment, grinning at how her cheeks expanded just a little more than usual while eating. Jessica stopped chewing and met Yuri's eyes. Almost immediately, her cheeks were tinted with pink, "What?" she mumbled.

"Nothing," Yuri chuckled and continued to roast the fish, "Nothing."

"Woah!" Jessica yelped and jumped back as Yuri turned around, nearly poking her in the eye with the sharp stick, "What the heck are you doing with that?"

"I'm going to go fishing," Yuri stated, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Jessica frowned, "Yuri–"

"I'm staying right by the shore, I won't go far," Yuri cut in, eyes widenening as she explained.

The frown never left Jessica's face, "There's still a bunch of fish left from the storm."

Yuri rolled her eyes, "It's rotten already, cooked and baked in the hot sun for nearly a day. We'd get sick if we ate that."

"But—"

Yuri began to get agitated. "I'm going fishing, Jessica." She stated, making each word stand out.

Jessica's bottom lip trembled, "I just care, okay?" She mumbled before turning and going into the hug.

Yuri remained silent for a moment, the only noise heard were the waves gently slapping against the shore. Sighing, Yuri tossed the spear that had taken her hours to make to the side and walked towards the hut.

The blonde girl was tending to the fire, her back facing Yuri who she knew had entered the hut. Yuri heard the girl sniff quietly, as if to hide it from her. Yuri let out a breath and sat down besides Jessica, silence enveloping them as the fire crackled and the waves crashed.

"I don't mean to be so emotional," Jessica huffed her cheeks before letting her lips rest in a pout, "I just," She let out a sigh, "I don't know. You're the only person on this damned island with me. I just don't like the thought of losing you and it scares me whenever we're not together. Especially at night bec—"

Jessica immediately shut up as Yuri hugged her tightly, pulling her close until she was nearly sitting on Yuri's lap.

Yuri chuckled. "You talk a lot when you're emotional,"

Letting her cheek rest on Yuri's shoulder, Jessica nodded, "I know."

"It's good though," Yuri hummed, squeezing Jessica's waist. Jessica leaned out a bit, "What?" she asked, eyebrows furrowing.

"That you care," A smile placed themselves on Yuri's lips, two pairs of eyes staring into each other's with as much intensity as the other, "Caring is good."

The question that popped into Jessica's mind escaped her lips before she could think, "Do you care about me?"

Not reacting the same Jessica had thought Yuri would, Yuri surprised both of them by clinking their foreheads together and raising her eyebrows, "Do you even have to ask?" She grinned, a light laugh escaping from the back of .

Jessica was blushing, no doubt. Her heart rate was beating incredibly fast, words coming out in a jumble mess, "That's.. It's.. Yes?"

For a second Jessica thought Yuri was going to kiss her on the lips and she stopped breathing but Yuri leaned out and placed a kiss on her forehead, "If I didn't care, you'd be dead by now,"

"That's nice to know," Jessica mumbled.

Yuri laughed, "If I didn't care, I would've let you eaten those fish bones,"

Jessica blushed deeper.

"If I didn't care, I wouldn't have helped you the day we crashed,"

Jessica remembered how Yuri had held her waist with the upmost gentle touch.

"If I didn't care, I wouldn't have hugged you to sleep last night,"

Yuri began to gently rock their bodies back and forth, allowing the warm air of the hut to embrace them.

"Of course I care, Jessica."

Jessica buried her face into Yuri's neck and it didn't even matter that she was really sitting on Yuri's lap. She just needed a hug from Yuri. And a hug she got.
