Chapter Two

Not So Lonely Island

Chapter Two

"How's it going over there?" Yuri asked in a mocking tone as she saw Jessica struggling to knock down a coconut from one of the palm trees by throwing medium-sized rocks at them. Jessica scowled before giving up. Jessica was indeed being a brat for ignoring Yuri for now two days that they've been on the island.

She had been living off of coconuts and small berries that triggered excessive vomitting.

Yuri, on the other hand, had not been vomitting. She's been eating some food she had found in the luggage she took. Yuri would've been perfectly fine with sharing some with Jessica, but the girl never asked. Yuri knew the girl would go back to her either way. She found it amusing how Jessica ignored her despite the constant look of worry and fear in the girl's eyes.

Yuri did not want to back down either.

It wasn't even a matter of them being stranded on an island anymore - it was their egos at battle.

But one night, Yuri couldn't help but get worried. Usually she would see Jessica laying near the same tree, resting under it while mumbling incoherent things to herself. But, on the fourth night of being stranded, Jessica was no where to be seen.

Something inside Yuri triggered her to toss the coconuts she had in her arms away and find the girl.

Luckily, the grass where Jessica had taken her steps were bent over, creating a clear pathway for Yuri. Yuri travelled quite far into the forest where the bush was dense, which made walking harder. Yuri wiped away the sweat that had accumalated on her forehead and continued on as it only got darker and darker.

It was confusing as the path turned many times and it seemed as if Jessica had gotten lost.

Soon, Yuri heard sniffling, like someone was crying. Making her way over, Yuri nearly stepped on the girl who was sitting on the grass, crying softly.

"Jessica," she whispered, sitting down next to the girl.

Jessica screamed in surprise but when she noticed Yuri, she flung her body towards the girl and hugged her tightly, ignoring the very sharp pain in her waist.

"I got lost," Jessica muttered, "I– I thought–" she began to cry again.

Yuri's arms looped loosely around Jessica's waist, not knowing what to say. Jessica sniffed and it went silent for a moment. The only noise was the constant sound of tree branches snapping and birds chirping lightly in the distant, cicadas buzzing.

"I'm sorry," they both apologized at the same time. Jessica leaned back, releasing herself from Yuri, eyebrows furrowed. Yuri glanced at Jessica before setting her eyes on a nearby tree.

"I was letting myself getting caught up in my pride, I should've stayed with you and made sure you didn't get hurt," Yuri admitted, guilty.

Jessica shook her head, "It's my fault,"

"I shouldn't have been so bratty, I shouldn't have let my ego get in the way of our safety, I'm sorry,"

They connected eyes and Yuri spoke again, "So, from now on, let's work as a team, okay?"

Jessica nodded, sniffling, "Yeah," she agreed.

Yuri swatted a fly away from her face before standing up, Jessica following, "Now let's get out of this forest,"

Turning, Yuri began to walk, trying to find familiar objects she had seen on the way there but everything looked the same. Jessica yelped as she felt something crawl on her bare foot. She kicked it off and stayed closer to Yuri, shoulders touching. It was dark and Yuri could barely see Jessica, but she could sense the girl's fear.

As if it were an instinct, Yuri's hand enveloped Jessica's and the blonde girl looked up, staring at Yuri's concentrated face as the girl tried her hardest to get them out of the forest.

Jessica was moved at Yuri's subtle yet strong action to calm her, it gave her slight shivers.

And luckily, eventually, Yuri found a clearing and as she pushing back the leaf with her right hand, that was connected with Jessica's, the moon was shining brighter than ever, making the beach and the water in the distance glow beautifully.

"Woah," Yuri mumbled, staring at the bright moon. Jessica looked up at Yuri, whose face was illuminated under the moon, "Thank you, Yuri,"

The tan girl looked down at the other, hands still holding tightly onto each other's. Yuri's lips began to curve up, "We gotta stick together if we want to survive,"

Nodding, Jessica squeezed Yuri's hand, "Yeah, let's sleep now,"

They got comfy on a familiar rock next to an even more familiar palm tree. The blonde girl's head found itself onto Yuri's right shoulder, hands now only loosely connected.

"Jessica," Yuri called out but did not hear a response. Craning her neck, Yuri saw the calm expression on the girl's face, eyes closed lightly and lips slightly parted. The tan girl let out a small chuckle.

Jessica wasn't half as bad as Yuri thought she was. Though she was still a little bratty, Yuri could handle it. Reaching over with her left hand, she fixed a piece of stray blonde hair that was sticking out.

"You aren't that bad, Jessica," Yuri muttered before she closed her eyes, her head gently placed onto Jessica's as she faded into dream land.

Still awake, Jessica's lips twitched before she smiled, 'You aren't bad yourself, Yuri'

Eyelidss fluttering open, Jessica rubbed her eyes with two fists and groaned a bit as she felt the soreness of her back kick in. Maybe leaning on a rock to sleep wasn't the best idea.

"Yuri?" called out to the name without even thinking and Jessica looked around until she saw a figure down at the beach, collecting things. Standing up, Jessica walked down to Yuri, allowing her toes to sink into the moist sand with each step, "What are you doing?"

"Clams," Yuri answered, "They're washed up, we can eat them,"

"Raw?" Jessica asked.

"Of course not," The girl replied, picking up another clam, "We'd have to make a fire—"

She paused.

"–Any idea how to make a fire?"

Jessica laughed a little and pointed to herself, "You think I– a spoilt brat– would know how to make a fire? You're kidding me, Yuri,"

They both shared a laugh and for a moment it didn't seem like they were stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere. After the laughter died down, Yuri connected eyes with Jessica, "It can't be.. that hard, can it?"

"I hope not," Jessica replied, reaching out and taking some clams from Yuri, "We better start one quick before these things spoil,"

"Glasses? Do you have glasses?" Yuri asked as they sat down in front of their rock, some dry leaves and sticks between the two of them. Jessica raised an eyebrow,  "Does it look like I have glasses?"

Yuri scowled and pointed to the row of luggage they had off to the side, "Just go over there and find something like glasses, would you?"

Rolling her eyes, Jessica rummaged through a dark maroon colored bag until, pulling out different pairs of clothes before seeing something reflective. She grabbed at it and smiled in delight, "Found one,"

"Good, give it here," Yuri held out her hand, looking up at Jessica, squinting as the sun blazed down.

"What are you going to do with them anyways?" Jessica asked, handing it over. Yuri angled the glasses, the sun hitting directly at the small pile of dry tinder and wood. Smoke appeared before a small ember.

"That," Yuri answered, leaning down and gently blowing on the pile until the fire became bigger. Jessica widened her eyes.

"Where'd you learn that?"

The tan girl shrugged, placing larger branches into the pile, "I read it somewhere. I didn't think it'd actually work,"

"But it's already hot enough, why do we need a fire?"

Yuri looked around, "To keep the damn bugs away, I have thousands of musquito bites,"

"Oh,"

"We'll take turns taking care of the fire," Yuri stated, watching the fire burn as sweat began to form on her forehead. She stood and began to take off her sweat pants and shirt. Jessica blinked at her.

"What are you doing?"

"Going for a swim," Yuri stated, now only in her undergarmets, "Wanna come?"

"After seeing that shark? No thanks," Jessica raised an eyebrow, scanning Yuri.

"Suit yourself," and with that, Yuri walked towards the ocean before taking a dip, allowing the salt water to cool down her body.

Jessica watched Yuri swim around freely then she looked at the pile of clothes next to the fire. Shrugging.

'Why not?' she thought before standing and taking her jeans off. She ed the plaid shirt she had found in one of the luggages and walked down to Yuri. The blonde girl stuck her feet into the water and looked up at Yuri who was staring at her from head to toe. Yuri walked up to shore and stood in front of Jessica.

"Is your cut okay?" Yuri asked, eyeing the faint pink scratched on Jessica's waist. Jessica nodded and let out a gasp as Yuri's arms found their way around Jessica's lower body, picking her up and bringing her into the ocean.

"Ah! Yuri!" Jessica squealed, though she was laughing. Yuri grinned and splashed Jessica down into the water. Jessica screamed loudly as she fell until the water swallowed her up. Jessica resurfaced, her entire body now wet. She fixed her blonde hair, pushing all of it back.

"Hey!" she yelled, as Yuri splashed her. Jessica swam away quickly.

Letting out a giggle, Yuri chased after Jessica, who did not stray too far. Jessica made sure they were not too distanced from the shore in case anything happened.

A high pitched squeal escaped Jessica's lips as Yuri's arms slid around her waist, "Got you," she grinned. Jessica looked up and stuck her tongue out at Yuri. They were both breathing hard from the swim.

Yuri couldn't help but think that Jessica was a beauty. She had defined face features yet still had the innocence of a teenager, her cheeks were plump and rosy, her eyes were large and brown.

Jessica wasn't as bratty and snotty as Yuri had thought she was.

The blonde girl's hands were placed on Yuri's shoulders, looking into the girl's eyes.

"How long do you think we're going to be here for?" Jessica asked, having trouble stabalizing her breathing.

"Until your daddy comes," Yuri stated, her toes digging into the soft sand under her feet. The water reached their upper stomach.

Having realizing their position, Yuri loosened her arms on Jessica and stepped away a little before clearing and looking at the sun, that was beginning to set, "We should go dry off,"

"Yeah," Jessica agreed and began to follow Yuri back to shore, though she was a bit disappointed that Yuri had pulled away. They wiped themselves off with an old, tattered shirt that Yuri found hidden in the sand on the second day they were stranded.

"Ugh, I can feel the sand in my bra," Jessica complained, itching at her chest area.

"Then take it off," Yuri mumbled, adding some more wood to the now small fire.

"Eh?" Jessica asked, cheeks warming up.

"We're both girls. I have s too, you know," Yuri smirked, looking over.

Blushing, Jessica lowered her gaze, "Don't look," she ordered. Yuri, who still had that small grin on her face, turned and focused on the fire, "I won't,"

"Done,"

Yuri turned and saw that Jessica was rummaging through the luggages, bent over with her undergarmets. Yuri's eyes trailed over Jessica's bottom and she immediately looked away.

"Are there no shorts in these?" Jessica asked, looking over at Yuri. The younger girl shrugged pointed to a faded pink baggage at the far end of the line, "That one, it's from some teenager I assume,"

Walking over, Jessica pulled out jean shorts and a tank top that was a little too small, showing off her lower stomach.

"You should change too," Jessica said, walking closer to Yuri who was still in her black bra and .

"I will, later," she stated, placing a shirt down on the sand before sitting on it, leaning against the rock, staring at the fire near her feet. Jessica took a seat next to Yuri as she brushed her hair with her hands, attempting to make it less frizzy.

"How old are you, Yuri?" she asked, starting conversation.

"Seventeen, how about you?"

"Seventeen? Really? I thought you were older. I'm the same age,"

"Oh? What year?"

"1989,"

"1989 too," Yuri smiled, "Month?"

"April,"

"Aish, I thought I was older,"

Jessica smiled, "What month are you?"

"December," Yuri stated, looking at the sun that was on the horizon of the ongoing sea. The heat in the air making the sun disoriented.

A head landed itself on Yuri's bare shoulder, "What do we do now, Yuri?"

Yuri let out a sigh, "Try to survive, I guess,"

"What if no one finds us?"

Turning her head, Yuri looked down at Jessica, who stared back up at her, "Don't think like that," she scolded.

"But, what if?"

"Then we'll try our hardest to continue living, even if no one finds us,"

"What about the people back in Korea and America who care for us?"

Yuri diverted her eyes, scoffing a bit, "I have no one," she stated bitterly, "So I don't care,"

Furrowing her eyebrows, Jessica looked at Yuri, her eyes trailing across Yuri's jawline before up to her nose then down to her lips.

"Yuri," she mumbled softly.

"Hmm?" Yuri hummed, eyes staring at the sun that was barely visible, a small semicircle at the surface of the water.

"Do you think we'll last?"

"What's with all the questions, Jessica?" Yuri commented, looking back at the older girl, who was shoulder to shoulder with her, bare arms touching and fingers laid next to each other.

Jessica looked back and forth between Yuri's two eyes, "I'm just," her eyes landed onto her lap, "I'm just scared, that's all,"

Eye softening, Yuri's hand reached for Jessica's and the blonde girl watched as Yuri's fingers interlocked with her own perfectly.

"There's no reason to be scared,"

"You got me,"
