Chapter Four

Not So Lonely Island

Chapter Four

"Where are you going?" Yuri asked, watching as Jessica got up and proceeded to the leaf doorway.

"Bathroom,"

"Want me to go with you?"

Jessica stared back at Yuri with a surprised expression, "What?" she asked. Yuri put her hands up in surrender, "I didn't mean anything by it, it's almost night time and I don't want anything to happen to you,"

The blonde girl blinked, feeling heat rising from her neck to her cheek, "I–I'll be fine,"

Yuri eyed Jessica, "Okay, be careful,"

"I will,"

And Jessica turned, heading towards the small corner of the beach where the tide reached just enough to wash away any waste left there. After doing her business, Jessica took a quick wash in the water but did not dare go farther than water that reached to her thigh.

She scrunched up her nose.

This was definitely not her ideal type of bathroom.

Yuri played with the warm sand inside of the hut, every now and then using a stick to poke around the fire, keeping the flames alive. She sighed until she heard a rustle and looked up, seeing Jessica hurrying into the hut with a scared look on her face.

The look disappeared as soon as Jessica saw Yuri. She quickly took a seat, close enough to Yuri that the tan girl could feel the girl's body heat.

"What's wrong? You seem scared,"

Jessica stayed silent for a moment before releasing a breath she hadn't realized she was holding in, "I am scared," she whispered, "Of what's out there,"

Yuri tilted her head and watched as Jessica flinched at the sudden noise of a tree banch cracking, most likely from a small rodent.

"I hope we get rescued soon," Jessica stated, bending her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around her frail body, "This place is scary,"

The younger girl thought about what she should do to make Jessica feel better, but the truth was, she was scared, too. Instead, Yuri wrapped her left arm around Jessica's shoulder and pulled her closer.

Jessica's head landed on Yuri's shoulder, eyes set on the fire burning not to far from them.

Jessica had expected Yuri to say something to calm her, but nothing came out of the girl's mouth except sighs and light breathing.

Shifting her head around, Jessica looked up at Yuri and saw the girl clenching her jaw. Unconciously, Jessica reached up and touched Yuri's jaw, "Why so stiff?" she asked gently, eyes connecting with Yuri's. Her hand landed on Yuri's nape.

The sun had completely gone down by then and the buzzing of flies and other insects could be heard by now. Yuri's eyes darted between Jessica's.

She had so many things running through her mind right now, but she didn't want to make Jessica feel even more scared than she already was.

Yuri placed her free hand on Jessica's and gave a light squeeze, "It's nothing,"

Jessica's eyebrows furrowed together.

"Here, go to sleep," Yuri patted her lap. Jessica frowned, "Yuri,"

"It's nothing, really," the younger girl smiled, though she could feel nervousness building up, "Really," Yuri lied.

"Now go to sleep, I'll take first shift,"

Reluctantly, Jessica laid down, head on Yuri's lap, feeling the girl softly running her fingers through her hair as sleep welcomed her.

BOOM.

Jessica sat up immediately at the loud noise and was surprised to see a flash of light before another boom had sounded. She looked at Yuri and saw the girl looking at her.

"It's thundering," she stated the obvious.

Jessica hated thunder, she had the ultimate fear of any loud noises. She let out a small whimper and scootched herself closer to Yuri, hugging the girl's arm.

Instantly, Yuri knew that Jessica had a fear of thunder. The girl's nails were digging into her forearm, it was pretty obvious that she was frightened.

The pouring rain pounded against the hut so hard that Jessica was afraid the whole thing would collapse. She could see water seeping in from small cracks, wetting the sand beneath it. Thankfully, the fire was okay.

"Jessica, I'm losing all feeling in my arm," Yuri whispered into the girl's ear, though her voice was drowned out by another set of loud thunder.

As an instinct, Jessica jumped and hugged Yuri fully, arms around the girl's lower torso. Yuri turned and her arms wrapped around Jessica's petite body, the older girl's head buried in her chest.

Reaching up, Yuri clamped her palms over Jessica's ears and used her fingers to gently massage the girl's scalp and temple.

Eventually, Jessica did fall asleep again, in Yuri's arms.

Eyelids fluttering open, Jessica could already smell the aftermath of the storm from last night. The dampness of the air and the fresh smell of the water gave her slight shivers.

Thump. Thump. Thump. Thump.

It was a heartbeat. Was it Jessica's heartbeat? She then realized that arms were wrapped around her in a tight hug. Pulling away, Jessica's eyes widened before she calmed down, seeing Yuri's calm sleeping face.

Her eyebrows slanted upwards in a touched expression, "You hugged me all night," she mumbled, reaching up and tucking a loose piece of hair behind Yuri's ear.

She sat for a moment before her eyes flickered to the fire that was nearly dead. Rapidly, Jessica added more firewood that they had stacked up at the side and got the fire up and running again.

"Jessica?" Yuri grumbled, groaning a bit as she stretched. Jessica blinked twice, "Yes?"

Yuri's tanktop lifted up as she stretched, "You made me sleep in the most awkward position," she chuckled a bit, though Jessica did the exact opposite by frowning and looking at the fire.

"Sorry,"

Noticing the girl's mood, Yuri crawled closer and sat next to the girl who was poking the fire with a stick, "Hey," she called softly but Jessica didn't look, "I didn't mind sleeping like that, you know?"

Jessica glanced over but didn't connect eyes with Yuri longer than a second, "Yes you did," she grumbled.

"No," Yuri shook her head, "As long as you were okay and not freaking out over the storm, I'd try my hardest to calm you,"

Jessica sighed and stared into the fire, "I bet you wish someone else had been stuck with you on this damn island,"

"W–What? Why are you thinking like that?" Yuri creased her forehead.

"I can't do anything to help you, Yuri," Jessica snapped, eyes finally finding Yuri's, "I'm just a spoiled brat who doesn't know how to do anything besides ask for things and to recieve them," she admitted, talking quickly as she blinked away the oncoming tears.

"And I feel bad because you're doing all the work and I don't do anything to help,"

"And when I do try to help, I always screw something up,"

"And—"

Yuri cupped her cheeks and the stick that was in her hand fell to the ground, "Hey," Yuri whispered, face only inches away from Jessica's, "You've done more than enough, okay?"

"But—"

"You got us fresh water using the bamboo, remember?" Yuri grinned a little but Jessica's frown increased.

"That was by accident,"

"You helped me make the fire,"

"You did all the work,"

Getting aggravated, Yuri moved her face closer than it already was, "Well, you gave me company when I was lonely, friendship when I needed it, and a nice cuddle buddy to sleep with,"

Jessica was silent and Yuri gave a smile when she knew Jessica couldn't respond back to that.

"Lighten up a bit, would ya?" Yuri patted Jessica's cheek before caressing it with her thumb, "We may be stuck on an island but that doesn't mean you can be all sad and what not,"

Jessica's eyelashes were nearly touching Yuri's, "Yuri, I—"

Yuri grabbed her hand and interlocked their fingers, "Let's go see what the storm left us with,"
