Chapter Three

Not So Lonely Island

Chapter Three

"A little help might be nice," Yuri said sarcastically as she lifted the large branch by herself. Jessica widened her eyes and quickly ran over, grabbing the other end of the branch.

"Sorry," she squeaked.

Together, the girls went back and forth from the forest to their fire, grabbing large leaves, branches, and vines to build a small hut out of. Not having any tools to use, Yuri had sharpened a rock into a sort of knife shape and used that to cut the branches and vines.

"Is it good?" Yuri asked as she stood back a little to admire her work. A small, demented hut made of fallen branches and vines.

"It's.. It's good," Jessica responded, standing next to Yuri and tilting her head a bit. Yuri sighed, "Well, it's all we got,"

"Better than nothing," Jessica smiled up at Yuri, who gave a small smile back, "Yeah," she agreed.

They climbed into the little opening and had to bend down their necks to stand under the roof made of leaves and branches stuck together. The fire they had created was in the corner, the smoke from it escaping through a small hole Yuri left open.

"You could've helped me, you know?" Yuri teased a bit, wiping the sweat off her forehead and neck.

Jessica opened to speak, but nothing came out. She blushed a bit, "Sorry," she mumbled.

"It's fine," Yuri grinned, sitting herself onto the ground, "We should explore the island some more,"

"Eh?" Jessica questioned, sitting next to the tan girl.

"Perhaps this place isn't even an island and we're just idiots, we'll never know," Yuri shrugged. Jessica watched as a stray droplet of sweat slid down from Yuri's forehead down to the girl's neck. She felt guilty for not helping the girl.

"When?"

"Now,"

Jessica widened her eyes and watched as Yuri stood and exited the hut, "W-What?" she asked, getting up as well and following Yuri.

"We aren't going to get anywhere just sitting around," Yuri stated, glancing towards the forest, "You can stay here and watch over the fire,"

"But–"

"I won't go too far, I'll be back before sun down, I promise," the younger girl connected eyes with Jessica, who began to panic at the thought of Yuri leaving her alone.

"Can't I go with you?" Jessica's eyebrows connected in an upwards slant. Yuri sighed and stared at the girl for a minute before taking a deep breath, "I guess so, come on, we need to be back here before the sun sets," She said, reaching out her hand. Jessica placed her hand inside Yuri's.

Jessica wore a pair of Converse that were a size smaller than her actual feet and Yuri was still wearing her beat up Adidas that she had had on since the plane crash. They walked through the dense forest together and every now and then Yuri would strike a tree to the right of her with a rock of some sort.

"Why do you keep doing that?" Jessica questioned as she watched Yuri engrave a noticeable line on the bark of a tree.

"So we won't get lost," Yuri grunted, continuing on, dragging Jessica.

As they walked, Yuri suddenly stopped. Jessica blinked, "What? What is it—"

"Shhh,"

It took Jessica a moment before hearing it.

"Water,"

"Running water," Yuri emphasized.

"Waterfall?"

"Perhaps,"

They picked up their pace and began to sprint towards the sound, the dirt and grass under their shoes were more moist, more soft.

"Definitely water," Yuri nodded, hand clasping Jessica's.

"Fresh water?"

"I hope," Yuri whispered before pushing some branches away and both girls gasped. An opening that followed into a small pool of water that had a waterfall flowing down into it from a cliff not to far ahead. Jessica tugged on Yuri's hand, "Let's go,"

Yuri let Jessica drag her to the edge of the pool and watched as the blonde girl immediately stripped out of her clothes. Jessica paused as she took off her shoes, "Are you not going in?"

Looking up, Yuri stared at the sun that peeked through the tops of the trees and into the opening, warming up the water.

The tan girl followed Jessica's lead and once they were both in their undergarments, Jessica dipped her toe in before letting her whole body sink. Yuri watched as Jessica's lips curved up after the girl had soaked her face.

"Fresh water," she stated. Yuri immediately plunged into the water, reaching the surface, "Thank goodness,"

"How are we going to take it back to the hut?" Jessica asked, watching as Yuri washed her face. Yuri looked over at Jessica.

"Good question, I have no idea," Yuri admitted before looking around, "Maybe we can use something as a container,"

"Bamboo?" Jessica asked, "Those over there," she pointed to some sticks of bamboo near the pool, "If we cut them in half?"

"Yeah, that'll do," Yuri nodded, thinking about it before smiling, "We have fresh water,"

Using a rock, Yuri cut into a bamboo stick and to both of their surprises, water flowed out of the hole, "We have even more fresh water now," Jessica stated, looking around at all the bamboo sticks that were probably filled with fresh rain water.

"Then we'll leave these here, we'll use coconut shells as containers then,"

"Are they clean to drink?" Jessica asked as Yuri arranged the coconuts along the back wall of the hut. Yuri shook her head, "I don't think so,"

"But.. isn't it in fresh water?"

"There's still organisms living in there,"

Jessica quirked an eyebrow, "Have you been stranded on an island before?"

Yuri let out a chuckle, "Let's just say I watched a lot of Man vs Wild as a kid,"

"Here, use this can," Jessica held out an aluminum can she found on the shore, "I found it down at the shore, we can use it to hold the water as we boil it,"

"Let's hope Bear Grylls was right," Yuri mumbled, carefully pouring water into the can and letting it sit ontop of a thin rock above the fire.

"Man, am I happy to be stuck with someone who knows what they're doing," Jessica smiled, watching the water boil. Yuri used a couple pieces of bamboo to get the hot can, setting it on the sand carefully.

"It smells like poo," Yuri commented, scrunching her nose.

"It's probably from the can," Jessica shrugged.

"Or you pooped,"

Jessica lightly shoved Yuri, "I did not," she denied as Yuri laughed, "Kidding, I'm kidding,"

"It tastes.. alright?" Yuri tried to find the right words to describe the odd tasting water, "Definitely not the water from Poland Springs, but it's still water that we can drink,"

"Let me try,"

"So needy," Yuri passed the can over to Jessica, who drank a small amount before passing it back to Yuri, "The bamboo water tastes better," she gagged.

"Because the bamboo water is rain water," Yuri sighed, "It's all we got," she took another sip, "Want some more? You can have the rest,"

Jessica shook her head, "I'm fine, I'll stick to coconut juice, thank you very much,"

"Okay,"

Yuri tended to the fire and from her peripheral vision she saw Jessica getting comfy on the sand, ready to sleep.

"Are you not going to sleep yet?" Jessica asked and Yuri shook her head, "I gotta watch the fire,"

"Wake me up when you're sleepy, I can watch over it after you,"

Yuri smiled a bit, "Yeah, I will, go ahead and sleep," she said, poking around the embers with a stick.

Jessica woke up by herself after a little while. "Why didn't you wake me?" Jessica asked angrily, seeing Yuri still sitting by the fire, looking tired as ever.

"You looked so calm sleeping, I didn't want to bother you,"

"Yuri, seriously, go to sleep now, I'll watch this,"

"I'm fine," but as Yuri began to stand up, Jessica put a hand on Yuri's shoulder, "Sleep, Yuri," she ordered.

Yuri let out a sloppy smile, "Yes, ma'am,"
