Chapter Twelve

"Good morning, Seoul! This is Yujee from Parks Morning Show! Today we have—" The sound cut off as Yuri closed the curtains and walked behind stage. Her stepfather stood at the back, looking at Yuri as the girl searched for Jessica.

And then, Yuri found her.

She was surrounded by her stylists and such, getting all ready for the national television show. That's when it hit Yuri.

They were no longer alone. What they once had on the island was as good as gone. Jessica had a reputation here on the mainland meanwhile Yuri did not.

A heavy weight filled Yuri's heart as she watched Jessica smile to one of the stylists. It seemed as if all of her teeth showed and her eyes lit up the whole backstage. She hadn't smiled like that to Yuri ever. 

Perhaps it was because she was much healthier compared to before, or because Yuri was overreacting, but Jessica had never seemed that happy with Yuri.

Jessica looked over and her eyes found Yuri's.

She noticed the distressed look on the younger girl's face and for a second her smile fell.

When she noticed the confused look on her stylist face, Jessica smiled brightly again, everyone around her becoming at ease.

Jessica couldn't help but feel a tug in her heart once Yuri turned away from her.

Yuri on the other hand felt somewhat betrayed and at the same time she wasn't really surprised, Jessica's world was too different from hers, how had she even dared to imagine they could be together? She just happened to be the other person that survived along with Jessica.

She shouldn't feel bad, right?

And Jessica looked happy so that's what matters, right? Right?

"Girls, you're out in five." One staff announced and both girls nodded.

"Thanks." Jessica said with a bright smile to the staff, the latter just blushed slightly and retreated.

Yuri just scoffed at this, it hurt to know it was only her that didn't get to be the reciever of such a beautiful smile.

It really hurt.

The both of them slowly made their way to where the show was being recorded, Yujee began to make an introduction for them.

Yuri took a deep breath and glanced at Jessica, the latter felt Yuri's piercing gaze on her and turned to her.

Yuri opened to speak, wondering if it would be okay for her to even talk to the older girl.

"Jessica." She called out, the latter felt stunned, it had been a while since Yuri had called her by her full name instead of Sica, Jessica nodded in aknowledgement and Yuri took a deep breath once again.

"I'm glad you're safe." Yuri whispered as she smiled sadly at her.

Jessica felt her heart pick up its pace and a small warmth spread throughout her body.

That's all she had been craving to hear from someone - anyone. It didn't quite surprise her that Yuri had been the one to say it to her.

After all, the young one had always had a warm heart.

"Let's welcome Kwon Yuri and Jessica Jung!" Yujee said loud and clear, beckoning them to finally approach her and join her in the interview.

"Hello." They both said as they approached the MC, Jessica's smile shining brightly while Yuri's small smile looked sincere enough.

"Wow, it's really nice to finally have you!" Yujee said with a smile that matched Jessica's perfectly. "You look so well! I would've never thought you were trapped in an island not so long ago!"

"Well, we waited enough time to be healthy once again before giving our first interview, didn't want to look hideous did we?" Jessica said as she laughed softly, looking at Yuri.

"Yeah, we just wanted to wait to be healthy and fully recovered." Yuri said with an awkward smile, not really knowing how to act in a situation like this.

"Loosen up, Yuri." Yujee said as she placed a hand on her shoulder. "It's just a small interview."

Yuri blushed slightly and nodded.

"How cute." Yujee commented and laughed after she said so, so she just laughed with her, wondering if that's what she had to do. 

"So, I'm sure that your bond must be really strong, after going through all that together." Yujee stated rather than asked, Yuri just smiled as she gazed at Jessica and the latter decided to speak up at that. 

"Of course we have a great bond, we're like best friends." She smiled cutely at Yuri, a way she has never done before and held Yuri's hand. "We helped each other a lot while on the island and learned to work together in order to survive."

Yuri nodded, just wanting to show her support to Jessica's answer. She didn't really feel like talking.

"Do you feel the same way, Yuri?" Yujee said, obviously searching for the next headline.

"Yes, it wasn't the best way to start a friendship, since being in that situation was quite stressful, but we managed through it and helped each other, we became really close." Yuri said, her thoughts filled with questions as she did so. Was any of that real friendship or was it just because they were lonely?

"Oh, I see." Yujee said. "Although I'm sure you didn't have that much of trouble in surviving, right? I can see you're a very strong woman." She said as she ran her hand along Yuri's toned arm, the latter blushed and Jessica just laughed although she felt the jealousy burning through her. It was just a joke, seeing as the audience laughed, but Jessica didn't find it very amusing.

The rest of the interview continued smoothly, or as smoothly as it could. Jessica did most of the talking while Yuri just did small talk. The older of the two didn't fail to notice Yujee's advances on Yuri while the latter was far too busy with watching Jessica's expressions.

Just as they were heading out, Yuri heard her name being called by none other than Jessica.

"Hey, Yul." She said, her expressions once again turning half-hearted and Yuri wondered if it was her the only one who didn't get to experience Jessica's bright expressions.

"Hey." The taller replied. "Uh... you... you look great."

"Yeah, you too." Jessica said with a shy expression on her face. The two of them just stayed like that, awkwardly staring at each other as they stood there.

"I... well, I should go, I don't want to take more of your precious time, I'm sure you have lots of things to do." Yuri said as she noticed her step-father standing not so far away from them.

"I..." Jessica was dying to tell her that she shouldn't leave, that she was willing to ignore anything she had to do through the day in order to spend time with Yuri, she wanted to tell her how thankful she was for everything, she wanted to kiss her, hug her close and never let her go.

But all she did was mutter an 'Okay, see you later' as Yuri smiled sadly at her.

"Once again, I'm glad you're safe, see you." And with that, she left.

"I'm glad you're also safe." Jessica muttered to herself as she watched the younger one dissapear, wondering why was she such a coward and why had she let her go.
