Drabble 31: Soul tears, Jongdae-centric

Jongdae trudged forward, his shoulders sloped with fatigue and resignation. The heavy weight of his backpack weighed down on his shoulders, and he didn’t raise his head to look up as people passed by him on the road.

At last, he reached the shadows at the edge of town, and he raised his eyes to the sky. The sun was setting in the distance, splashing the sky with purples, pinks, oranges and the faintest twinkles of the first stars.

Jongdae lowered his head, a small smile now playing at the corner of his lips. He continued to walk forward, his eyes glued to the ground as he followed the past into the shadows of the night at his feet. As he walked farther and farther, the lights of the city faded behind him, and the stars and the moon guided him over the grassy plains.

Jongdae fell to his knees and threw his head back. His backpack fell from his shoulders as he stared up at the sky. Tears filled his eyes. It was all for nothing—it had all fallen apart at his feet. He could never hope to reach his dreams, they would all shatter and vanish, like the soft light of the stars shining above.

At last, after kneeling for who knows how long, Jongdae slowly got back to his feet. He settled the weight of his backpack squarely over his shoulders and began to walk back towards the city as the first rays of dawn broke over the horizon behind him.

a/n: Written while listening to Kyungsoo's "Cart" OST. This was a very short piece. Maybe I'll take this series off hiatus, I don't know...inspiration seems to come to me quite frequently this week :) I love you guys! Comments are highly appreciated.
