Behind The Facade [Indefinite Hiatus]

“It’s a good thing he’s stationed in Jeju…” Baekhyun thought as Lu Han drove them to their destination.

Baekhyun slumped against the passenger seat, the poison taking a toll on his body. He could see that Lu Han was exhausted as well. Cars run on the energy of the user. Even Chanyeol who usually had the most energy was tired. He had his arm around Hae Ri’s shoulder as he pressed her against him. Her body was rapidly freezing up and he tried to use his body heat to keep her warm. He was worried sick. Baekhyun suppressed the ridiculous feeling of jealousy he felt boiling at the bottom of his gut. Chanyeol had run up to his room immediately to refer to his book of spells. Even though the book was in an ancient language, he could read it. He had always been able to do so and it was him that translated all the books in the forbidden library for Hae Ri. He casted a healing spell on Hae Ri to stop the bleeding. It took almost of all his energy for the bleeding to reduce. She was still in grave danger and they had to hurry.

They stopped in front of a general hospital and Chanyeol gave Baekhyun a sceptical look.

“We are going to a special wing of the hospital,” he explained.

Lay massaged his temple as he kept his half-lidded eyes on the medical documents in front of him. The work he was doing in the blood bank of the hospital was undermining his abilities but it was still overwhelming. He was a healer and the one in charge of healing the supernatural beings. He has the ability to heal the humans of their illnesses and diseases as well but he would only scare them off if he had tried to do so. Hence, he was given such an insignificant job. He was about to get a drink of blood from the blood storage when the doors of his office banged open.

Baekhyun and Lu Han rushed in, gasping for air, along with a tall, tired-looking man who was holding a semi-conscious girl in his arms. Lay felt surprised upon seeing his two friends but his eyes widened when he saw the girl.

“Is that…Ra Ae?” he thought, ridiculously of course because she smelt like human.

He did not question anything and immediately went into action because he could sense that she was in critical condition. He swiped the documents off his table, making a makeshift bed. Chanyeol carefully laid her on the table.

“Lay, she has poison in her system,” Baekhyun explained.

Lay nodded his head.

“I know, and so do you,” he said calmly.

Baekhyun cracked a small smile. Lay was good and Baekhyun knew that he could always count on him. Lay got down to work. He placed his palm above Hae Ri’s wounds, without touching her and concentrated. Slowly, a black liquid started to seep out from her wounds. He moved his palms further away from the wound and the thick black liquid followed, tossing and turning, struggling against his powers.

“Get me something,” Lay instructed.

Chanyeol, who was standing by the table playing with his hands anxiously, immediately went to find something to store the poison. He took an empty vase from the shelves and placed it on the table, beside Hae Ri. Small beads of sweat were starting to form on Lay’s forehead as he jerked his hand forward, slapping the poison into the vase. It was strong and lethal poison. The thick black liquid wriggled in the vase. It was of no surprise that such a lethal poison was used. Vampires have natural healing abilities yet Baekhyun’s system was unable to completely detoxify this poison. Hae Ri’s wounds healed immediately due to Chanyeol’s healing spell. She slowly opened her eyes and Chanyeol rushed forward. Lay stretched out his hand to stop him. His job was not done yet.

“She is still in an unstable condition. She has lost too much blood…” Lay began.

“Does she need a blood transfusion?” Chanyeol interrupted.

“Surprisingly…No,” Lay replied.

He placed his palm right above Hae Ri’s heart and concentrated with his eyes closed.

“There is something abnormal here…As if someone had put a Block here, a very strong one,” Lay explained.

“A Block?” Chanyeol asked.

“Yes, does she have any health complications? Something to do with her blood perhaps?” Lay questioned.

“She’s anaemic, ever since she was born,” Chanyeol replied.

“Well, the Block is the cause of it. Her heart is only working at 50% of its natural capacity after all,” Lay continued.

“Can you remove the Block?” Baekhyun asked hesitantly.

“Well, I can try but I don’t have much confidence that I can completely remove it. The Block is too strong, maybe someone from the elder council…” Lay replied.

Everything was starting to make sense. Lu Han felt a cold shiver down his spine. When Baekhyun had followed Chanyeol, who was carrying Hae Ri, back to his room, Lu Han had went straight to the Park couple’s room. He agitatedly recounted the incident with the Shadows and once again demanded an explanation.

“It will begin soon…the first step, the Unlocking Blood Ritual,” Mr Park had replied solemnly.

Lu Han had thought that it was an incredulous idea. To complete the Unlocking Blood Ritual, they would need the blood of the 3 royal families of the vampires. Due to the many wars that had ensued, he, Baekhyun and Ra Ae were the only descendants left. Now that Ra Ae was dead, there was no way that ritual can happen. Unless…

“Lay,” Lu Han stopped him from continuing.

“She’s Ra Ae’s daughter,” he stated.

There was a moment of silence.

“Oh, that would explain the resemblance,” Lay replied dryly.

“That means the Block must have been blocking out her vampire bloodline,” Lay continued.

The other two men did not take the news as calmly.

“What?!” Baekhyun asked Lu Han incredulously.

“S-she’s…she’s…” he stuttered. Lu Han squeezed his shoulders reassuringly.

“Yes she’s Ra Ae’s daughter, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before,” he apologized.

Baekhyun stared at the lifeless Hae Ri. In a way he got his wish, some part of Ra Ae had remained with them. He would now be able to make up for his mistake, for failing to protect Ra Ae.

“Daughter? Vampire?!” Chanyeol demanded. He did not understand a single thing that Lu Han and Lay had said. Things were spiralling out of hand. This mission was becoming way too screwed up. He had no idea what was going on but it seemed like he and Hae Ri were the only clueless ones.

“I’m sorry, Chanyeol, I’ll explain all of these to you later,” Lu Han said apologetically.

Lay ignored all the commotion and contemplated how he was going to remove the Block so that Hae Ri would be able to heal herself. It was a much effective way of saving her compared to undergoing a blood transfusion. Even if it means converting her.

“Her body is rapidly deteriorating, removing the Block is our best chance. I will commence the Unblock now,” Lay announced, looking around for affirmation.

Baekhyun and Chanyeol were too stunned for words. Lu Han nodded his head grimly.

“Even if it means playing into their hands…this is the only thing we can do now,” he thought.

Lay placed one palm above the other and he stretched out his fingers above Hae Ri’s heart. He concentrated, placing all his powers into a large red orb. The red orb emitted a strong power and it was glowing with strength. Lay struggled as he pushed the orb forward, towards Hae Ri’s heart. With a grimace on his face, he gave one last push, using all of his strength and injected the orb into her heart. He managed to remove a large part of the Block and the recoil from his actions pushed him to the floor. Hae Ri’s body gave a sudden jerk and it started to spasm violently.

“Hold her down!” Lay exclaimed as he panted heavily.

The three men immediately pressed her limbs down to the table but they could not stop the movements of her body. It was not a scene that was foreign to the three vampires in the room. This was how things were like whenever a human was converted to a vampire.

Somewhere dark, cold and quiet, a man chuckled,

“We can finally begin…the war between the vampires and the humans.”
