Salient Love
Even though the whole lesson was dead boring, I dreaded the lunch bell.
Sooyoung was going to interrogate me to every last, minuscule detail.
We both bought our food, and sat down at our usual bench.
Sooyoung stared at me expectantly, her eyes opened wide, as she leaned towards me.
I took a deep breath, and I told her about the gang last night, how that guy saved me and such. When I told her the reason for my absence the past weeks, i replaced crazy beast attack with car accident. But I did mention my sister being in a coma, and my father being all self-blame..
I don't know why I didn't just tell her the whole truth.
"That's... Crazy.." Sooyoung exhaled. "And no wonder you were so shocked when you saw him just now..."
I knew she would ask me more questions, like whether the car driver has been prosecuted so i quickly added ," Can we don't talk about the accident? I don't really want to remember it."
She nodded, and hugged me, being careful not to hurt my shoulder.
And we both ate in silence for a while, each of us lost in our own world, Sooyoung was processing the information and I was thinking about my sister and father.
I was the first to break out of the trance, and I looked around for a certain blond boy. I didn't remember seeing him during lunch.
"Say, what's that blond ang- i mean, guy's name ?" I suddenly asked her.
"Oh him? Luhan," she replied, breaking away from her own world.
"Luhan... Interesting name." I murmured to myself. "Is he korean?"
"Nope. I think he is chinese. I'm not sure. He doesn't talk much," she shrugged and went back to eating. I could feel that she was still digesting the information i just told her. Well, I couldn't blame her.
It all seemed surreal when I first woke up too.
I craned my neck and looked around.
"Where is he? I don't see him anywhere,"
"Hmm? Oh, he never comes to lunch. I heard he just stays in the classroom, listening to music," she replies.
"He is such a weirdo," she scoffed. I chuckled, the perky Sooyoung was back.
"Bipolar freak," I smiled and flicked her forehead.
"OW?!" She glared at me, and flicked me back.
I pouted and looked away, my mind returning to Luhan.
"Won't he get hungry?" I mumbled to myself.
"Stop talking to yourself, you freak," Sooyoung rolled her eyes.
"AISH EAT YOUR FOOD," and I stuffed a biscuit in .
The bell rang, signalling the end of lunch.
We both placed our lunch trays back, and started making our way back to class.
I bit my lip. "Wait a second!" I said to Sooyoung and I ran off, quickly buying an apple and a packet of milk with a paper bag.
I jogged back to Sooyoung and smiled as I placed the food neatly in the paper bag.
Sooyoung shot me a weird look. "What? Are you that hungry?" She raised an eyebrow.
I rolled my eyes, "No! I'm giving it to Luhan-sshi. He must be hungry, and I've yet to thank him for saving me yesterday night."
"Well, good luck then. He rejected every single girl who gave him gifts or asked him out," she twirled her hair as she spoke, "he just ignores them and continues walking. He is the symbol of cold and mean!" She frowned and scoffed.
"But good luck yeah?" She smiled and walked back to class.
Great way to ruin my confidence, Sooyoung. Thanks a lot.
The dismissal bell rang.
Students started to pack up and file out of the classroom, chattering and laughing.
"Bye Daehee, I need to rush to tuition!" Sooyoung blew me a kiss and jogged away. I smiled and waved goodbye.
I stretched and yawned, before dumping my stuff into my bag.
I reached under my table, and felt the paper bag.
Oh yeah! I needed to pass this to Luhan.
I turned around and realised he already got up, ready to leave.
Lucky for me, the whole class has already left, since there were extra activities for most of them today.
"Luhan-sshi!"
He paused, but continued walking after.
"Luhan-sshi!" I raised my voice. He must have heard me now.
He ignored me and continued walking away. I frowned and jogged up to him, and held onto his arm just as he was about to exit the classroom.
I felt his whole body stiffen under me, and I hastily let go of him, cheeks flushed.
"Hear me out please? I won't take long." I asked him.
To my surprise, he didn't walk away anymore. His back faced me, but I knew he was waiting for me to say something.
"Uhm, thank you for saving me the last night. I know this may not be enough as a thank you, but i noticed you didn't eat lunch, so uhm here," i said awkwardly, and I gingerly moved his arm slightly and placed the paper bag in his hand.
"Just accept it, or I have to throw it away," I tried to joke.
He finally fully turned around, and looked at me, then at the paper bag placed weirdly in his hand.
I froze under his gaze, and I quickly bowed and scampered back to my desk to pack my items.
I stared at the ground, cheeks flushed, unable to look at him.
That was so embarrassing!
I finally looked up, to see his shadow leaving the classroom.
Hmm. I couldn't help but wonder if he would eat it, or throw them away.
Preferably it was the former.
I bit my lip and tip toed to the class entrance and looked out.
I saw Luhan at the end of the corridor, munching on an apple, the paper bag clutched in his hand.
I smiled. He ate it. I can't believe it.
But he suddenly stopped walking, like he sensed someone was spying on him, and turned around while chewing.
He spotted me and raised a brow at my awkward position.
I was leaning forward, my head sticking out of the door, and smiling like some sort of e.
I quickly stood up, wiped that goofy smile and regained my composure, before ducking back inside the classroom shyly.
What's wrong with me ?! I slapped my cheeks.
Why do I keep embarrassing myself in front of him!
I shook my head, and went back to my desk to finish packing my bag.
I zipped it then slung my bag over my shoulder and walked out of the classroom.
I couldn't help but look around as I walked out, to see whether Luhan was still in the school compound,
But I couldn't see him anywhere.
He must have left.
I smiled again as I walked home, reminded of the fact he accepted my thank you gift.
