Chapter 4 -- The First
Monsters: The MousetrapHana walked back up to her office and she tossed the trash from the Danish and stripped her clothes. She was ready to take a shower and maybe take a nap. The only time she had to investigate these things was at night anyway.
She had to try and find out how it stalked and lured the girls. She pinned Yoona's pictures to her as well as her notes, and fell into the rhythmic drops of water.
Her tired muscles welcomed the heat and she cleaned herself up as she tried to put the puzzle pieces together. Nothing was making sense, but none of it ever did. Not even from the beginning.
She sighed as she remembered everything that had happened as clear as day. She had been out with her friend, Anna, they had gone out partying actually. She had been drinking and Anna had as well.
But Hana had more, the two of them walked around in their heels, drunk stumbling and laughing their heads off. They had no real perception of their surroundings and they didn't care about the noise they made. She was hanging out to Anna just to keep her body up before they both gave up and sat down on a bench nearby.
In the park, their worlds were spinning but they kept laughing anyway. It had been a while since they had done anything crazy like that. They had stopped partying and drinking after high school ended, but it was Hana's birthday and Anna surprised her by taking her out again.
They started with 2 beers before heading to the club to dance the night away. They shared tequila shots, whiskey shots and a few cocktails with some men throughout the night. They constantly had to push people away because Anna attracted everyone of the male species wherever she went.
They swarmed like flies and kept trying to get with her for the night. But Anna never let them, that night was Hana's night and she was staying by her bestie the whole night. Even when muscular men would come by and flex their muscles, Anna ignored them.
They closed their eyes as they waited for the world to stop spinning. Anna, then volunteered to go and get some snacks so they could sober up. She could smell some burgers nearby and it had her craving some fast food. And Hana let her leave, by herself.
It never occurred to her that she couldn't smell the fast food. It never occurred to her that she should have gone too since it was 2 o'clock in the morning.
It never occurred to her because they had done this so many times before. Hana always got more wasted than Anna. And Anna would take care of her by buying some snacks and getting some things for free with her looks. They would be hysterical and drunk stumble closer to one of their houses.
It was usually Anna's house because hers was closer, and after fumbling with the keys for 20 minutes they would collapse onto Anna's bed and pass out for the night. They would wake up when the sun was at its peak in the sky and go out and get breakfast.
Meat, rice, and kimchi. It was their ritual after a girls' night out.
But this time it wouldn't happen. Because Anna didn't come back after getting snacks. She never came back the day after that either.
Hana waited and waited for her to return. At her apartment, at their usual hangouts, everywhere they went together, Hana looked there.
But Anna had disappeared. And Hana didn't know where she was nor could she go to the police. They were drunk, they would only say that maybe Anna passed out somewhere or she died.
But they didn't find an alcohol poisoning body, they didn't get any murders, they didn't get any public disturbance signals. Anna didn't return to her apartment and she left everything behind there.
She had simply vanished and Hana had no idea where she went.
That was the night Hana decided she wouldn't drink anymore. That was the night Hana chose to stop partying. She holed herself up in her apartment, taking some of Anna's belongings to help her remember Anna but staying there all day.
She didn't go out to eat anything, she stayed home with instant noodles and coffee. No more alcohol, no more clubs, no more parties. She gave away all of her clubbing dresses but she kept the one Anna bought for her.
The red little number she had received for her 21st birthday from that night. She couldn't bring herself to give it up since Anna was the one that bought it for her. She had to keep something from her, in case by chance she came back and got angry with her.
It wasn't until someone came knocking on her door and she ended her recluse phase. It was Seungyub, her adopted younger brother from high school.
He had heard about what happened and brought meat. The smell of it wafted into her apartment and she was dying for some real food. She let him in and he comforted her a bit after feeding her.
After babying her, that was when he grew serious. He told her he looked into it and found that Anna wasn't the only one that had gone missing. She might have been the first, but while Hana had holed herself up, he had found more.
That was when she decided she would get to the bottom of it, no matter what happened. She had to find Anna and solving the case would be her best bet. And it finally ended up hermit phase.
She got out of her apartment to find out more about what happened. And now, here she was on her own, no police help, connecting the dots.
She turned off the water in the shower and sighed softly, drying herself off. She needed a nap and then she could go back to work with some fresh eyes. Maybe then she could figure out the smells.
Or even why the girls were the popular ones in the peak of beauty.
She crashed on the futon face down and fell asleep immediately. Just a few hours and she would be good to work again.
To find Anna again.
