Chapter 11 -- Folklore
Monsters: The MousetrapHana slept well again that night, she didn’t wake up after two hours again, and she got through another night without a nightmare. This made her more confident that once she solved the mystery of the missing girls, she would be able to get a decent night’s sleep again.
She woke up and got ready for the day, she had to go to the library to figure out to connect the smells with the missing girls. But no leads on that front, she was just going to have to wing it. Grabbing a jacket for the cold air and her keys, she heard her phone vibrate right before she got her hand on the knob. She checked the caller ID, “Unknown number?” She muttered to herself.
She dismissed it and brushed it off until it started ringing again, same ID. She decided it would be better if she just answered, to see what was up and if it was a soliciting call then she could just hang up.
“Hello?” She said, putting her ear to the speaker.
“Good morning.” A husky voice said on the other line. “I have something that I want to tell you.” He said.
Hana could clearly tell this was a man speaking, but he had this mysterious air that she couldn’t help but wonder about, “Okay? Why don’t you tell me your name first?” She asked him.
“I can’t. I can only help you this once. You should look for the book, Juliet’s Book of Old Wives’ Tales and More, and turn to page 394.” He told her. “You’ll find some answers.”
“How do you know? How can I trust this? Hello? Who is this?” She responded as the beep of the dial tone answered her. She sighed in frustration, what kind of person gave out information like that? How could she not assume that this was a trap?
What if it was the culprit trying to lead her in the wrong direction? What if it was pointless?
But she couldn’t deny that he sounded legit, he knew her problem, he wanted to help her but couldn’t say his name. He had an exact page number for the information she needed to find. There was no harm in looking for the book at the library at least.
With that, she turned her phone off and headed out. She didn’t need any distractions, she had to get her focus together. She deduced that this book would be in the fiction section, due to its title and found that the other was also called Juliet, no last name.
Taking the book off the shelf, she noticed its thickness, how many old wives’ tales could there possibly be? She turned to page 394 and started reading.
I have found a recipe for eternal youth. This simply requires some magic and some essence of beauty. All one must do is obtain a young and healthy girl who is the peak of her youth and drain it from her. Her youth will be easy to take once you have the powers.
The powers come from spilling the blood of a beautiful innocent. By fairest blood it is done, and by fairest blood it may be undone. Those with pure hearts are often seen as the most beautiful of them all.
One must be careful with this spell though, if it fails, then instead of eternal youth, one will receive eternal age. Please pray to the gods and ask for help with this if you dare.
She read a short excerpt from the whole page and sighed, this information wasn’t entirely helpful. It was an old wives’ tale about how a woman could keep her youth by taking pretty girls.
Granted, the girls were the prettiest in their schools and matched but what kind of person would want to have eternal youth? She took the book as she found a desk to sit down at and read some more.
Not only was the woman culprit bothering her, but how could someone find the blood of an innocent? What did that mean? Did it mean a ? The first one taken had to be a then, she knew Anna was…
But was Anna really the first? She thought back to all the women that were known for their beauty. Only one could come to mind. The one she had seen on the news, Jeong Hyosung. The one who hasn’t aged in years.
Would she believe in this old wives’ tale?
