Chapter 13 -- Smell
Monsters: The MousetrapHana closed the book and took it with her as she searched the rest of the section, if Hyosung believed in an old wives’ tale then the favorite smell part had to be a part of another fairy tale of some sort. There had to be a way to find out.
She through all the books on the shelf, coming up with nothing. She had no idea how to find smell in anything. She searched through all the titles, from Cinderella to Sleeping Beauty, nothing was showing as a possible book to lead her to the smell problem.
She sighed as she searched all the titles, but came up empty handed. There was no way she could figure that out. The favorite smell was just a lure that the kidnapper magically learned. Not only that, but there was no way Hyosung could drag a girl around and keep her hidden until now.
No, she had to have something or someone helping her. Hyosung wouldn’t get her hands dirty. Hana knew that, she knew the conceited type well enough to know this. That gave her a thought, perhaps, it would be in a monster section.
She moved away from the fairytales and headed for supernatural. It was there she happened to see a book sticking off the shelf. It was somewhat thick and she heard footsteps nearby but saw nothing when she looked around. She shrugged it off before pulling the book off the shelf, there was already a dog-eared page for her as she flipped to it.
A picture of a giant greeted her, he had a pipe in his hand and it was smoking. A Kapre, a humanoid creature of fire that smokes a pipe, it lures female companions with its pipe. It has the sweetest-smelling perfume that lures women to it and attracts women like this. It can hide among humans and can be up to eight or nine feet tall. It walks around in the dark depths of the night and water is unfriendly to it. It has a belt that gives it invisibility.
She dropped the book loudly and the librarian walked over, shushing her with a glare. She whispered her apologies before picking the book back up and walking over to a table. This was the thing that Hyosung was using for her dirty work. This monster had to be it, he used sweet smells to lure women, he could create any of the women’s favorite smells with his pipe and that’s why they were all different. He came out at night and kidnapped women. And he also had an invisibility belt so he could hide from the cameras.
This was the thing, it had to be. But if it was a creature of fire that was immune to water, then the only place Hyosung would regain control would be someplace that made it weak, around water.
It had rained recently so somewhere outdoors, or a freezer. Somewhere with easy access to any part of the city. She had to figure out where the girls were being kept, she wracked her brain and couldn’t think of any possible places.
“I’m sorry, miss. But the library is closing.” The librarian told her and took the books from her. “Are you going to check these out or not?”
Hana shook her head, “No, I’m not. Thank you for the information.” She said running outside of the library. She looked around and noticed that the sun had went down. She had spent too much time in the library was now wandering alone.
The library was also on the opposite end of her apartment building. Her only choice was to cut through the alleyway by the halfway house. And she hated doing that, the drug addicts made her feel uneasy. She moved as quietly as she could once she got into the alley.
She could hear the potheads laughing as they start tripping, their dreamy haze making them feel nice and relaxed. She could hear the crazy ones that were on coke or ice. She could also hear the random couples hooking up in the house as well.
She felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up, that eerie feeling of knowing something bad was going to happen. She kept her eyes ahead of her, if she turned around, she wouldn’t be able to take it. Something bad was about to happen, she could take an addict, she had no valuables or anything. If she had to become a victim, she could at least keep herself safe through self-defense.
She took another step before she froze in her tracks. The smell of strawberries was in the air and it was not coming from the halfway house. She turned around and saw it, the monster she had read about it. He was tall and bulky, like a giant. His pipe was in his hands and it smoked around her.
Hana sighed, “Well, damn it.” She felt light-headed before falling, the giant caught her and picked her up in his arms. She felt her body fight her to collapse but her mind wouldn’t let her. She stared right up at him and he stared right back.
She didn’t know how it was possible but she could see sorrow in his eyes, begging for her forgiveness. She passed out in his arms and he carried her away, as if they never existed.
