Ch. 19 - Taming Baby Jung

Second Chance

Chapter 19 – Taming Baby Jung

It was two in the morning and most of the occupants of the beach house were in their beds, asleep, except for one. Krystal stirred awake not too long ago in need to make a quick trip to the bathroom.

“Aish, why is this door not locking?” Krystal repeatedly pressed the button with her thumb, hoping the bolt will latch and stay put. Unfortunately, there is a defect on the lock, making it unable to lock properly.

Feeling frustrated, Krystal huffed and just gave up. “Forget it. It’s two in the morning, no one will come bursting through here. Plus the lights are on, I’m sure they’ll get the hint.”

With that, Krystal sat down on the toilet and did her business.

“Aish, I shouldn’t have drunk all that juice. I have a weak bladder for crying out loud.” She murmured under her breath.

*Thump, thump*

A sound caught her attention. Her gaze quickly shifted towards the door.

*Thump, thump*

They sound like faint footsteps from the distance. The steps are very soft and discreet, as if they are trying to sneak in or something. Her ears perked up warily as the footsteps became more and more prominent with each step, which only means one thing; whoever it is outside in the hall, is approaching the bathroom.

Who could that be?

Krystal gulped nervously.

What if it’s a burglar? Or worst, a !

As thoughts of worst case scenarios of what might happen to her entered her mind, she became even more frightened. She quickly finished up and washed up.

She was about done when suddenly the doorknob began shaking violently as if someone was trying to bust it open. Krystal automatically shrieked and reach out of the nearest object she could reach. A thick magazine by the counter caught her eyes.

As soon as she reached for it, the door burst open. On instinct, she shut her eyes and began swinging the rolled up magazine in all sort of direction, hoping to land a hit on the culprit. And because she was swinging it in every possible direction, she did manage to hit the culprit, more than once actually. When she felt she had hit something, she began striking in that one specific direction.

“Die ! Die! Die! Die!”

A grunt and a groan was heard as she continued swatting the unknown person with her makeshift weapon.

Not long after, more footsteps made it to where she was.

Jessica, Tiffany and Yonghwa stared wide-eyed at the shocking scene before them.

“Yah! Krystal, what are you doing!?” Jessica exclaimed when she saw what was going on.

She tried to step in to stop the girl’s episode when suddenly she got whacked right on the arm with the deathly magazine. “Yah! Stop!” She yelled out as she took a cautious step back when her sister almost whacked her again on the same arm.

Krystal didn’t listen though. She kept whacking the unsuspected person.

Both Tiffany and Jessica didn’t know what else to do to cease the younger girl’s attacks. They were too afraid to get hit by Krystal’s frantic assaults, but they knew they have to stop her soon or else her victim will sustain even more injury than she already have.

Noticing the gravity of the situation, Yonghwa decided to take a swing at attempting to stop her frenzied sister. He ducked and dodged the oncoming attacks as he trekked his way into the bathroom. He successfully made it through, but not without sustaining a few hits on his arms and back. After making it safely inside, he quickly grabbed a hold of Krystal’s flailing arms with his hands, stopping her from further swinging the object towards other innocent people.

“Krystal stop!” He shouted after he had snatched the torn magazing away from her grasp.

Hearing her older brother’s voice, she immediately ceased her movements and slowly opened her eyes. Her brother’s distressed expression was the first image to welcome her.

“O-oppa?”

Yonghwa sighed in relief. “Finally.” He murmured irritably under his breath.

Jessica and Tiffany both huddled beside the unfortunate victim of Krystal’s vicious attacks. Jessica delicately cradled the dazed figure in her arms and laid her head on her thighs. She gently the person’s cheek with her palm, hoping to pull her out from her trance.

“Taengoo?” She spoke softly, afraid of startling the girl.

Taeyeon grunted. She feels like she had just been hit by a bag of bricks. Her head felt heavy and her mind felt woozy. As of right now, her vision wasn’t quite right. She’s seeing random sparks on both Jessica and Tiffany’s faces.

“Can you see me?” She heard Jessica’s gentle voice echo in her ear.

“Brrrmnngg…” She mumbled.

She could see Jessica’s brows furrowing in confusion. She assumes that Jessica probably didn’t understand what she just said.

Slowly, she could feel herself slowly falling weary by the second. She felt like going to sleep.

Her eye lids became too heavy for her to keep open. Soon, her lids languidly dropped down until Jessica’s worried face was swallowed by the darkness.

“Taeyeon!” She gasped when she saw her eyes slowly closing. Her hand unconsciously slapped the girl on the cheek.

“Jessie!” Tiffany grabbed a hold of Jessica’s hand before it could strike again.

Yonghwa looked over his shoulder to see what the commotion was about. His face contorted into worry when he saw Taeyeon lying unconscious on her sister’s lap.

Bringing his attention back to his younger sister, he observed her carefully to make sure she was no longer a threat, before cautiously releasing her arms from his grasp once he was certain she wouldn’t attack again.

“Did I get the ?” She asked hopefully as she brought her arms back to her side.

Yonghwa couldn’t help but roll his eyes. “Wrong. You didn’t get the , babo!" He bobbed his knuckle on her forehead. "But you did manage to get Taeyeon-noona.” He said as he tilted his head backwards, motioning for her to take a peek behind him.

Krystal furrowed her brows and looked over her brother’s shoulder. She gasped almost immediately at the sight of her sister’s lifeless girlfriend sprawled all over the bathroom floor. He was right. She didn’t get any at all, but she did manage to slug her sister’s girlfriend instead.

“Oh crap…” She murmured nervously to herself.

Yonghwa clicked his tongue in a disapproval manner. “You. Are. In. Big. Trouble. Missy.” He scolded as he flicked his middle finger on her forehead with every word he spoke.

“Owww!” She disgruntled, rubbing her reddened forehead after his brother’s brutal punishment.

Hearing her sister’s whimper, Jessica whipped her head towards her sister’s direction and sent her an icy glare that froze her entire being in a heartbeat.

Krystal gulped.

D*mn. I think I just activated HellSica.

------

Krystal sat stiffly on the couch, her head hung low and her gaze focused on her trembling hands. Her sister has been staring her down for a good three minutes now as she paced back and forth in front of her, her arms folded over her chest and formed in a thin line. She could literally feel her sister’s glare burning her scalp and piercing through her skull. It was freaking her out.

Out of nowhere, the painstakingly sets of footsteps that has been trudging on the wooden floor for quite some time suddenly faded, catching her attention. Krystal slowly lifted her gaze up to check if her suspicions were correct. As soon as she saw her sister’s legs she quickly brought her gaze back down to her hands. Yup, she was right. Her sister is standing right in front of her.

She fidgeted uncomfortably under her sister’s gaze, as her sister began tapping her foot impatiently on to the wooden floor.

Yonghwa and Tiffany stood to the side as they watched the confrontation between the two sisters trepidation. Both were aware of the older girl’s temper and were worried for Krystal’s wellbeing. They knew once HellSica is activated, there is no escaping her wrath.

Taeyeon, finally conscious, sat quietly on the armchair beside the couch Krystal is currently occupying by herself, as she watched the confrontation between the two Jung sisters uneasily.

After what seemed like forever, Jessica finally spoke.

“Why did you attack Taeyeon with the magazine?” Jessica went ahead with her interrogation.

Krystal  took a quick sideways glance to Taeyeon’s direction, meeting the older girl’s worried gaze for a second, before bringing her gaze back down to her trembling palms. “I-I thought she was a …” She stuttered nervously.

Jessica huffed. “How the heck did you manage to mistake Taeyeon for a ?” She asked incredulously.

Krystal frowned. She didn’t like her sister’s tone.

Gritting her teeth, she answered back. “If you were there, you would have freaked out too!” She said raising her voice a little.

Catching herself, she took a quick breath to calm herself down before starting again.

“I really didn’t know it was her. From the way she was walking down the hallway very stealthily, I-I thought she was some kind of robber or something. When she was trying to open the door to the bathroom, she grappled the doorknob like a crazy maniac trying to break in, so I became frightened. I didn’t know what else to do. Before I knew it, I already found myself acting on instinct, trying to defend myself.” She explained as she continued to stare at her palms. She lifted her head up and looked at her sister in the eyes. “But I swear, unnie, I didn’t mean to hurt her. I really didn’t.” She stressed on, her voice a bit shaky from guilt.

“You shouldn’t have jumped into conclusions though. You could have seriously hurt her you know?”

Krystal drop her gaze back down to her hands, burying her face deeper in shame. She doesn’t like it when her sister gets mad at her. Not only because she’s scary when she gets mad but also because Jessica is her role model. She sees her sister as someone she looks up to, someone she wants to become when she grows up. When Jessica scolds her, it makes her feel insecure because she’s not getting any closer to being like her sister. Instead she just keeps disappointing her.

Taeyeon noticed Krystal’s uncomfortable disposition. She felt bad for her because she’s getting scolded by her sister. She knows how frightening Jessica can be when she gets angry, so she can empathize with her. Honestly, she doesn’t blame Krystal for beating her up, it’s not like it was on purpose anyway. She’ll admit, it was partly her fault things turned out the way it did.

“Apologize to her now.” Jessica commanded.

Krystal snapped her gaze up. “W-what? B-but I didn’t do anything wrong—”

“Apologize now!” She reiterated a bit more firmly than last time.

“No!” Krystal yelled back.

Taeyeon decided it was finally time to intervene before the entire thing escalates. She got up from her seat and walked over to her fuming girlfriend. “It’s alright, Sooyeon. I’m fine now.” She said as she rubbed Jessica’s arm soothingly, hoping it’ll calm her down. “Plus, I was the one sleepwalking. I scared her so it’s my fault she reacted that way.” Taeyeon explained further.

Jessica deliberately shook her head. “No, it’s not alright.”

Krystal gritted her teeth in contempt. She doesn’t know why she has to apologize when it was Taeyeon who scared her in the first place! She should be the one apologizing for scaring her out of her wits! What she did was only for self-defense and there was no harm done!

“Sooyeon…” Taeyeon cooed, trying to garner her lover’s attention.

Hearing Taeyeon’s gentle voice, Jessica reluctantly shifted her gaze towards her. Once their eyes met, her gaze immediately softened.

“I can’t just let it go, Taengoo, you know—”

A scoff cut through midsentence, catching the two older girl’s attention. Both heads turn to the younger Jung.

“Trying to act nice aren’t we?” Krystal mumbled to herself, loud enough for the two to know that she murmured something, but not clear enough for them to understand.

“What did you say?” Jessica’s brows creased as she turned her full attention to her younger sibling.

“I didn’t say anything.” Krystal replied coldly without looking at her sister.

Jessica balled her hands into a fist. Her sister’s annoying behavior is really cutting her patience. “Why are you acting this way?” She snapped at her sister, finally voicing out her curiosity.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Krystal replied with a blank expression, devoid of any emotion whatsoever.

“Yah, if you’ve got something against me, then just say it! Ever since dinner, I’ve noticed how odd you’ve been acting. You didn’t talk at all; not to me, not to Tiffany, not to anyone! What’s your problem?”

“I don’t have a problem!” Krystal finally yelled out.

Jessica scoffed. “If you don’t have a problem, then why are you yelling at me and talking back at me!?”

Rising from her seat, Krystal stared hard at her sister. “I don’t have a problem, ok!? At least not to you!” Her eyes unconsciouly flickered towards Taeyeon. She quickly returned it back to her sister once she realized her mistake.

Taeyeon’s mouth opened agape as she finally understood what was going on. Krystal doesn’t have a problem with Jessica, she has a problem with her. She’s the one who caused this entire argument. It’s her fault.

Jessica also caught the swift action. Her anger receded as she realized why Krystal was acting so cold and stubborn this entire time.

But I thought she was fine with Taeyeon?

She stared at her younger sister as she contemplated about what she just learned. She really hopes Taeyeon didn’t catch it.

Krystal knew she was caught. She tore her eyes away from the couple and dropped it on anything but them.

Taeyeon slid her hand in Jessica’s own and gave it a squeeze. “Sooyeon-ah, let it go…I’m fine.” She said giving her a weak smile.

Jessica’s chest writhe painfully as she stared at Taeyeon’s gentle eyes but broken smile. Although she doesn’t want to let it go, she knew she can never deny her lover’s request, especially not when she looks so hurt like this. In the end, she found herself relenting.

“Fine.” She breathed out.

Taeyeon forced out a smile. She turned her attention back to the younger girl. “Krystal, it’s alright now. You can go back to—”

Before she could finish her sentence, Krystal abruptly rose from her seat and stomped away up the staircase.

“Yah!” Jessica yelled after her fleeing sister. She can’t believe how rude Krystal is being towards Taeyeon.

She was about to trudge after her younger sister to teach her a lesson, when an arm wrapped itself around her waist from behind, gently pulling her back. Still locked in the person’s arm, she spun around within the embrace, ready to rage at the person who stopped her, when she realized it was Taeyeon who did so. She halted, and leaned back to the arm that was securely holding her back.

“Don’t. Let her be.” Taeyeon uttered faintly as she stared pleadingly in Jessica’s eyes. She’s fully aware of Krystal’s cold behavior towards her. She’s not dumb. She could tell the girl didn’t like her one bit, but she understands. Well, she sort of understands, though it’s still unknown to her as to why Krystal feels that way towards her.

Jessica’s lips curved downwards into a deep frown, her eyes flickering with sadness as it slowly sunk into her that Taeyeon knows. “Taengoo…”

“It’s ok. I know it’ll take some time for her to warm up to me, but I’ll manage. If I were able to melt your icy heart, then I’m sure I’ll be able to melt hers as well in no time.” She said as she flashed her confident smile along with a thumb up.

Jessica was still frowning.

Taeyeon playfully wiggled her brows in an attempt to make the brunette smile.

Jessica’s lips gradually tugged upwards, soft giggles emitting between her slightly parted lips. It’s really difficult not to laugh when Taeyeon is being her usual dorky and adorable self. Although she knew she shouldn’t be laughing during a serious moment like this, in the end, she broke into a fit of laughter causing Taeyeon to break into a fit of laughter as well.

Jessica hit her lightly on the shoulder. “Yah, we’re not supposed to be laughing during serious moment like this.”

“I know. But isn’t it also true that at times like these, comic relief is necessary to counter the angst?”

“You read too much fanfictions online.” She remarked as she shook her head.

“Nah, I’ve only read the ones you’ve read.” She said cheekily.

Jessica couldn’t help but giggle at that. It’s true. She does read them. They’re very enjoyable.

Taeyeon giggled along as she leaned in and brushed her nose endearingly on Jessica’s tinted red cheek. She couldn’t help herself. She was just too cute.

The two were too lost in each other’s world that they failed to notice the remaining people in the room. Yonghwa and Tiffany are both cringing from the excessive PDA the couple is currently displaying. Though Tiffany found their interactions cute, she can’t help but find it a bit too corny for her liking.

Not wanting to watch the two any longer, Tiffany decided to intervene. “Ahem!” She yelled aloud in order to wake the couple from their reverie before their ‘cute’ antics turn into something more gruesome.

Hearing her best friend’s annoying voice, Jessica inwardly groaned. She darted her soft gaze from Taeyeon to Tiffany’s and sneered at her.

“What?” Tiffany whined as she averted her gaze to avoid Jessica’s piercing ones.

Taeyeon chuckled. “Why don’t we all go back to sleep now? It seems like Yonghwa and Tippany might throw up if they keep watching us.”

Tiffany nodded in agreement. “Yeah, Taeyeon is right we should all—wait a second! My name is Tiffany, not Tippany!”

“But your name is too difficult to pronounce.” Taeyeon complained. “Can I just call you Ppany? It’s a lot easier.”

“Aww! Ok! Ppany is good with me!” Tiffany clapped cheerfully.

Jessica glared at Taeyeon. “Yah, what’s up with you and not being able to pronounce English names properly? First you can’t pronounce my name so you asked if you could call me by my Korean name, now it’s Tiffany’s? I’m getting the feeling you’re only saying that so you can find an excuse to give her a nickname.”

Taeyeon waved her hands in front of herself defensively. “That’s not true!”

“And how come Tiffany has a nickname and I don’t?” She sneered at her.

Taeyeon gulped. “Um, I should make one for you then! Erm, what should I call you…” Taeyeon thought for a moment as Jessica continued to sneer at her. “Oh! How about Sica? Sica is good, right?”

Jessica kept her scrutinizing glare.

Taeyeon continued to fidget under Jessica’s piercing stares. Finally, after a minute of thinking, Jessica broke out into a smile. “Ok! I like it! Sica is cute!”

Taeyeon sighed in relief. She then dropped her gaze on the smiling Jessica.

Seriously, this girl is bipolar. She silently thought to herself.

“Alright, let’s all go back to our rooms then.” Tiffany announced.

With that, the four of them walked back to their own individual rooms.

------

The next morning Taeyeon woke up early to cook breakfast. She wanted to specially make Krystal’s favorites in an attempt to win her over. When she first cooked a meal for Jessica, she told her how much she loved her cooking. Since Jessica and Krystal are pretty much alike, she thought maybe Krystal will love it too.

Inside the kitchen, Taeyeon can be seen running around from one side of the kitchen to the other, juggling ingredients in her arms and whipping up various foods on different counters.

A scorching smell lingered in the air, catching Taeyeon’s attention. She crinkled her nose as she sniffed the smell sauntering in the air. Her eyes bulged out of her eyes when she realized that something was burning. Spinning around on her heels, she found out the source of the burnt stench.

“Omo! The bacons!” Taeyeon quickly turned off the stove. She grimaced at the pieces of black torches that used to be strips of bacon.

“Aish…”

She grabbed the pan and reluctantly discarded the burnt pieces and began preparing a new batch.

Not long after, people began stirring awake. By this time, she was about done with her ‘American’ styled breakfast. She picked up the plates of food she finished preparing and laid them neatly on the dining table.

From the refrigerator, she took out the pitcher of lemonade she also prepared that morning. As she was entering the dining room, she bumped into Krystal along the archway.

“Omo! Goood moarning!” She greeted in English.

Krystal just stared at her with a blank look on her face, which eerily resembled very much that of Jessica’s own when she used to ignore her.

“Erm, sorry about last night. I didn’t mean to barge into the bathroom like that. I hope I didn’t scared you that much.” She chuckled sheepishly.

Krystal, however, continued to give no response.

Taeyeon could only scratch the back of her neck awkwardly due to the lack of response she’s getting from the younger girl. However, not wanting to give up just yet, she flashed the girl with a bright smile, hoping that Krystal would reciprocate her kind gesture. Unfortunately, because Krystal is such a very stubborn person, she refused to give any reaction whatsoever. She pushed Taeyeon aside, making Taeyeon’s shoulder bump on the archway, as she sauntered ungracefully towards the kitchen.

Taeyeon almost lost her grip on the pitcher as she bumped onto the archway. Thankfully, she caught herself before her fingers could release itself around the handle. She sighed in relief.

“That was close.” She breathes out as she held her hand over her chest.

She turned around and watched as Krystal made her way into the kitchen.

Aish, this girl is a lot harder to crack than her sister. She thought sadly to herself.

She sighed disappointedly. Her shoulders slumped down wearily.

A gentle pat on the back startled her. Surprised, she whipped her head around and found Yonghwa standing behind her.

“Don’t worry, Taeyeon-noona, she’ll come around.” He said encouragingly.

Taeyeon just nodded along. She really hopes so.

------

“Wow! These are delicious, Taeyeon!” Tiffany commented.

“Thank you, Ppany.”

“Yeah, this tastes really good! Did you make the pancake batter yourself, Taeyeon-noona?” Yonghwa asked as he shoved another forkful of blueberry pancakes into his mouth.

“Yeah. I just mixed the ingredients you guys brought in yesterday.”

“Wow, I didn’t know you’re such a great chef, Taeyeon! Jess, you’re so lucky!” Tiffany gushed.

“Of course I am!” Jessica smiled proudly. Underneath the table, she slid her hand into Taeyeon’s open palm and gave it a squeeze.

Taeyeon turned to her and smiled.

A loud clank caught everyone’s attention. All gazes fell to the youngest Jung, who is currently violently stabbing her pancakes with her fork without care whatsoever.

“Um, you don’t like blueberry pancakes?” Taeyeon asked.

Instead of replying, Krystal just stabbed the pancake with her fork once more, making another loud clank. Taeyeon cringed at her brutality.

“Um, should I make you another one?” She asked in an attempt to appease the younger girl.

“No.” Krystal replied coldly. “I don’t like your cooking.” She revealed rather bluntly.

This made Taeyeon’s heart sunk.

Jessica turned to Taeyeon and noticed the hurt expression on her face. She gently squeezed the older girl’s hand, making her turn to her.

Jessica flashed her a warm smile as she rubbed her palm with her thumb soothingly.

Krystal gritted her teeth at the revolting sight.

It sickened her how her sister can be so open to some random stranger she has only known for only a month. This wasn’t the Jessica she knew. In the past, her sister wouldn’t even be friends with her this early. Donghae didn’t get close to Jessica until a couple of years later. Her sister is cold and pretty much unfriendly. That’s why she didn’t make friends easily and that’s why she doesn’t have many friends either.

Her sister is not the type to let people in too easily. Donghae’s passing and their parent’s divorce is the reason why she doesn’t let people get close to her. She’s afraid of getting hurt. So why? What makes this girl so special that she let her into her heart so easily? Why does everyone trust her so easily? Why does everyone like her? She really can’t see what the others sees in her. She just can’t.

Feeling suffocated, she pushed her seat back and rose from her seat.

Everyone stared at her.

Her eyes flickered up, locking gaze with her older sister’s curious ones momentarily. She quickly diverted her eyes away and made a dash for the back door through the kitchen.

Jessica was about to get up to follow her younger sister, when Taeyeon held her back. She looked down at Taeyeon.

“I’ll go talk to her.”

“But Taeyeon…”

“Please. Let me speak to her.”

Seeing her lover’s pleading eyes, she can’t help but submit to her request.

“Ok.” She sighed as she sat back down to her seat.

Taeyeon gave her one last reassuring smile before letting go and running after the younger Jung.

------

“Krystal!” She called out once more.

The younger girl didn’t turn around. Instead, she hastened her pace. Taeyeon inwardly groaned as she increased her pace as well.

Not long after, she finally caught up with the girl. She snatched her wrist, making the girl stumble backwards towards her.

Taeyeon’s quick reflexes allowed her to catch the younger girl on time. She grabbed both her wrists and held them tight.

“Krystal, please talk to me!” She pleaded.

“No!” Krystal snatched one of her arm’s back and tried to push Taeyeon away with her free hand.

Unfortunately, Taeyeon’s hold on her other wrist was too tight. No matter how much she pulled and pushed, the older girl just wouldn’t budge.

Taeyeon quickly regained her hold on the girl’s free wrist.

“Aish!” Krystal hissed. Not knowing what else to do, she began clawing Taeyeon with both her captured hands. Her fingers got caught on the pendant’s chain around Taeyeon’s neck. When she pulled her hand back, the chain got dragged along, causing it to snap, thus releasing the pendant from Taeyeon’s neck.

As soon as the pendant fell to the ground, Taeyeon’s body dematerialized. Krystal’s entire body slipped through her invisible ones, causing Krystal to fall face first onto the sandy beach. Thankfully, she was able to break her fall with her hands.

She quickly pushed herself back up and faced Taeyeon, who, on the other hand, has her eyes wide open in pure and utter shock.

“Yah!” Krystal shrieked as she pointed an accusing finger at her.

Before Taeyeon knew it, the girl dove towards her direction in an attempt to tackle her to the ground. It was too late for her to stop her.

Krystal’s eyes widened instantly when her arms, along with the rest of her body, went straight through Taeyeon’s own. She soon found herself back on the sand, her palms and knees breaking her fall once more. She slowly rolled on her back and stared at Taeyeon with frightened eyes.

“W-what the hell are you!?”
