The Weird Midget

Second Chance

Chapter 2

“If Mrs. Lee starts insisting she took her medication with a lopsided smile on her face that means she’s lying, so make sure she takes it! Don’t fall for any of her tricks! And trust me she has a lot of tricks. Oh! And make sure Gyuri goes to her therapy sessions. She usually likes to ditch, especially every Wednesday. I’m not really sure why but she does. Oh and—”

“Ok unnie! I get it! I’ll make sure none of your patients miss anything. Now will you please go home already?” Hara whined.

Jessica frowns. She feels like none of her colleagues wants her here. Even her best guy friend slash boss wants her to leave. Am I really that of a bother around that they all can’t wait to get rid of me?

Hara notices her friend’s glum expression so she quickly changes the subject. “So, I hear Fany unnie is going to be in town next week!”

Jessica’s eyes perks up. “Tiffany?”

“Yeah! She said she’s going to be here for a while. We should all hang out then!”

“Yes. We should. I’ll talk to Fany about it when she gets here.”

Hara beams at the comment. The brunette couldn’t help but smile at the adorable maknae. “Alright, I think I should get going then. I don’t want to hold you from your patients.”

The doe eyed girl nods. “Ok! I’ll see you soon unnie! Have fun!”

After a quick hug the two parted ways.

10:00 PM

Great, it’s only been two hours since I’ve officially begun my vacation and I already end up in a bar drinking my brains out. Is this what Heechul wanted me to do? Wallow in self pity and become wasted?*sigh*

Jessica looks around the half empty bar and notices that everyone in there was with someone except for her. At the far right corner she could see a couple eating each other’s faces like there’s no tomorrow. To her left was a man flirting with two women who seem to be enjoying his company very much. Even the bartender is flirting with a girl. *sigh* Everyone seems to be paired up with someone. She’s the only one without anybody. She frowns at the thought. Only if he was still here.

Of course, as she expected, thoughts of her deceased loved one immediately consumes her mind.

Donghae.

And as if on cue, her heart constricts at the thought of his name. It has almost been a whole year since that unfaithful day and she can still feel the guilt chewing her up from the inside. Everyone keeps telling her to move and forget about the past; but seriously, how in the world was she supposed to do that? How can she forget such tragedy never occurred? There’s no way she’ll ever forget about it even if it does kill her inside. No, she mustn’t complain. This is the only way she can atone for her sin…for murdering her beloved one.

A tear makes its way down her slightly pink tinted cheek. She places a hand over her tear stained cheek and laughs at the wet familiar sensation on her fingertips. It reminded her of her dark days when she used to cry her eyes out. She’ll be laying on her bed in a fetal position, her face buried in her hands as she cried herself to oblivion. She feels so pathetic that she’s doing the same thing all over again. Whatever happened to the promise of never to going back to this wretched state?
She laughs bitterly to herself.

She told herself she’ll bury the past and put up a strong front, but it seems like all her efforts are backfiring. Instead of successfully burying her past, it seems like it just keeps resurfacing. And the strong front that she tried to build was just a façade that couldn’t even fool a single creature on this planet. No matter how much effort she puts, everyone could still see the vulnerable Jessica.

I’m so pathetic.

Jessica glanced down at her empty glass and quickly motioned the bartender to pour her some more of the alcoholic beverage. As soon as the man filled her glass, she wasted no time gulping the scorching cool liquid down her parched throat. She sets the glass down and lazily stares off ahead.

*hiccup*

Woah. The alcohol is finally taking effect.

Jessica starts giggling to herself. She calls for the man again, but this time she asks for a whole bottle. She begins to pour herself another glassful only to swallow the whole thing in one shot.

By this time more tears have made its way down her cheeks. She wants the tears to stop, but for some odd reason her eyes feels like they have a mind of their own. And so she resumes to drowning herself with the liquid hoping it’ll stop the tears and hoping it to relieve the pain in her chest.

Out of the corner of her eyes, she sees someone sit on the stool beside her. She ignores the individual and resumes drinking. She doesn’t care if they sit there as long as they leave her alone.

She was about to pour herself another glassful when she suddenly feels eyes boring through the side of her face. She turns to her side and finds a woman, probably around her age, with blonde hair resting just above her shoulders, staring intently at her. This bothered her. But what bothered her most was the eerie smile on the girl’s face. She so badly wants to snatch those lips away and slam it on the ground and stomp it with her foot until it turns into dusts.

The smile seems genuine but it feels like it’s mocking her, which infuriated her even more. She doesn’t like that smile. Nope, she doesn’t like it at all, and so she resorts to what she does best. She gives the girl before her the most piercing glare she could muster up in her drunken state; her eyes narrowed, nose flared, cheeks puffed and lips curled into a pout.

The girl with the blonde hair stares at the brunette with amusement. Instead of coming off as intimidating, the glare comes off adorable making the blonde girl laugh hysterically.

The blonde girl’s reaction makes Jessica fume even more. “YAH!” She yells out in a very piercing high pitched voice causing the other girl to cover her ears and wince.

The blonde eyes Jessica again before flashing her another smile.

“Hi! My name is Kim Taeyeon! You must be Jung Jessica right?” She brings her hand up for a handshake.

Jessica stares at the outstretched hand before her. She then brings her gaze up to the face of the smiling girl. Who is this girl? Her face scrunches up trying to recall if she ever met her in the past. To her dismay, she just couldn’t recall the name Kim Taeyeon.

“Hoooow do you know my naaame? Have weee met befoooore?” Jessica slurs.

Taeyeon shakes her head. “Nope. This is the first time we’re officially meeting.”

“Then how do you know my naaaaame? Are youuuu stalking meee?”

“Stalking you?” Taeyeon stops to think and then shakes her head again. “Nope. I think this would be the first time I’ve stalked you.” She smiles again.

“Yah! Stop smiling!” Jessica scowls. She lifts her hand towards the other girl’s face wanting so badly to snatch those lips away and crush them without mercy. Unfortunately her drunken stupor has extinguished any coordination she has left.

Taeyeon dodged her attack with ease. Instinctively, she grabs hold of Jessica's wrists and holds them in place. She pouts. “Why? You don’t like my smile?”

“No!” Jessica retorts.

“Why not?” Taeyeon asks sounding a bit hurt by Jessica’s cold response.

“Becauuuse it makes you look like a creeeeepy purrrvert!” Jessica remarks as she starts laughing hysterically.

Taeyeon could only stare at her with a confused expression. “Creepy ert? But Sunny told me I should smile more so I don’t scare you off.” She mumbles to herself.

Jessica stops laughing and moves her face close to Taeyeon’s. “Did you saaay somethiiing?”

Taeyeon quickly shakes her head.

“Oh.” Jessica reaches for the bottle and quickly pours herself another glassful. She gulps the liquid down in intervals.

Taeyeon watches silently as Jessica attempts to bring the glass to only to miss and spill its contents all over her shirt. She starts giggling to herself mumbling, ‘oops, I’m wet.’ Taeyeon shakes her head in disbelief. Clearly the girl is intoxicated. There’s no way she’ll be able to get home by herself in this state. A light bulb suddenly flashes in her head. She scoots her stool closer to Jessica’s.

“Hey…you seem very drunk. Would you mind if I take you home?”

Jessica turns her head towards Taeyeon and narrows her eyes again at the blonde girl. “Why do you want to take meeee home? Are youuuu trying to plot somethinggg?”

“Huh?”

Jessica suddenly gasps. “I knooow what you’re plaaaning! YOU WANNA MEE DON’T YAA!?”

Taeyeon’s eyes almost popped out of her eye sockets at Jessica’s sudden outburst. Some of the patrons of the bar were starting to stare and give her dirty looks. She could hear them whispering disapprovingly at her.

Oh no! I have to clear this up ASAP!

“Uh…haha…haha…nice joke Jessica!” She laughs awkwardly. Jessica doesn’t laugh and keeps a straight face.

The people continued to flash her dirty looks. Taeyeon mentally face palmed herself.

“She’s drunk! I swear that’s not my intention! We’re best friends!” Taeyeon tried to explain to the onlookers. None of them believed her explanation.

Taeyeon lets out a frustrated sigh. “Please, just go back to your business, there’s nothing going on here!” She said waving everyone off.

The people shook their heads disapprovingly again before returning to their own businesses. Taeyeon lets out a sigh of relief as they did so. She returns her gaze back to the brunette only to find her with a new bottle of alcohol.

“I can’t believe you just said that! I just wanted to make sure you get home safely! That’s all!” She hisses under her breath.

She can’t believe the nerve of the brunette to accuse her of such a thing! She’s a nice person! She’ll never try to take advantage of anyone! Especially not a drunk person!

Jessica glares at her. Although she was a bit wasted, she can still think properly! Well, at least she thinks she can.

Does she really think I’m that stupid to actually believe her lies? Ha! I wasn’t born yesterday! That girl definitely wants to take advantage of me no doubt about it! She and her erted smile can just go and try to trick someone else because Jessica Jung is not dumb! No sir!

Taeyeon sighs again. “Come on. You’re drunk. Can’t you just let me take you home? I swear I’ll just drop you off at your place and that’s it. Please?”

Jessica doesn’t bother to answer the girl. She returns her attention back to her empty glass and she pours herself another shot.

Taeyeon frowns at this. She can’t believe the brunette is ignoring her! All she wants to do is finish this stupid task so she can move on to her next one! Why must this girl be so difficult?! Is she trying to test patience?! Gaaaahhh!!!

She closes her eyes and she inhales then exhales. Her anger slowly dissipates. Soon she was calm again. *sighMaybe she didn’t hear me. No matter, I’ll just ask again.

“SO, WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO TAKE YOU HOME?” She asks a little louder as if the girl was deaf.

“No.” The brunette answers flatly without looking at her.

Taeyeon purses her lips. There’s no point in arguing with the girl. She’s as stubborn as a rock! I guess I’ll just stay here until she passes out. It’ll be easier to drag her home if the other girl isn’t awake, kicking and screaming.

And so Taeyeon sits there for the rest of the night just watching the other girl drink glass after glass of alcohol.

By the time 11:30 came around, the brunette has her head resting on the cold marble surface of the bar with two empty bottle and a half full glass of alcohol.

Taeyeon slowly lifts her forefinger towards Jessica’s arm and pokes her lightly. The girl doesn’t move. She pokes her again, but this time with a little more pressure. The figure remained still. As soon as Taeyeon was sure that the girl was completely out, she steps off her stool and walks over to the sleeping girl.

Good thing Sunny gave her the pendant, or else there’s no way she would be able to take the brunette home.

She takes Jessica’s arm and places it over her shoulder for support. Before she could leave with the brunette the bartender comes up and asks her to pay up. Knowing she doesn’t have any money on her she grabs Jessica’s purse and hands the man a wad of cash. With that settled, she takes the girl with her out of the bar.

Once outside, she halts and looks down at the girl. “Hmm…I can’t fly you to your condo. I guess I’ll just have to hail a cab.”

As soon as she waves her hand, a cab pulls over to the curb and it drives them back to Jessica’s condo. Just like what she did before, she uses Jessica’s money to pay for the cab fare.

She peeks through the door to the building to check for any security guards. She smiles when she sees the man sitting behind the desk with his eyes shut tight. Phew! It’s a good thing he’s already fast asleep, this makes it easier for her to smuggle the sleeping girl into the building.

Once they’ve reached the front door of the girl’s condo, Taeyeon gently lays Jessica by the wall before taking off the pendant and walking through the door, opening it from the inside. She then drags the sleeping girl in to the room and places her gently on the bed.

“Phew! We finally made it!” Taeyeon bends over to catch her breath. She slowly raises her head and looks at the sleeping girl on the bed. “Tsk, tsk. You’re so heavy!”

-----------------

Jessica stirs from her sleep. She rolls over on her belly and stretches her arms above her head. Her whole body feels stiff. It must have been one hell of a night. She thought. She doesn’t even remember anything that happened after she arrived at the bar. Everything seems to be a blur after her fifth shot. Ugh, and the headache isn’t helping either.

As soon as she was done stretching, she rolls back on her back and begins massaging her temples attempting to relieve the vicious headache that had just conjured up. All of that crying and drinking last night is finally catching up to her. D*** headache.

She lays there on her bed for a while, just staring at the ceiling. Then she suddenly remembers the weird dream from last night.

She swore it was weirdest dream she’s ever had! She remembered bickering with some random short stranger in a bar. Then the stranger tries to her! The nerve of that midget to try and take advantage of her in her dream was outrageous! It was the most ridiculous dream she’s ever had within her thirty years of life.

Ugh, clearly I drank too much last night. I can’t believe I actually dreamt about a midget trying to me. I should stay away from alcoholic beverages for the time being. It’s making me go nuts.

She rolls off her bed and heads over to the bathroom. She takes out a pain reliever from the cabinet and pops it inside . She finishes by washing her face and brushing her teeth before heading over to the kitchen.

Hmm…what should I eat today?

She opens the fridge and was surprised to find it empty, except for a carton of milk and cream cheese. She heads over to the cupboards opening every single one of them successively only to find all of them empty except for one containing a half filled box of Froot Loops.

Wow. How long has it been since I went out grocery shopping?

She takes out the box of Froot Loops and proceeded to take out the carton of milk from the fridge. She carries the two items in her arms and walks towards the small dining room. She stops almost immediately almost tripping on her foot when she sees someone sitting at the dining table with their back facing her. She gapes at the woman.

Who the heck is that?!

Feeling eyes on the back of her head, the woman turns around and meets Jessica’s shocked gaze. The stranger smiles almost immediately at the sight of the brunette finally awake and sober.

“Jessi—”

*Thump!*

“Owwwwwwww!” The stranger cups her nose with both hands and bends over in pain. “Why did you throw the cereal box at me?!”

“Stay away from me!” Jessica yelps.

The stranger, who was still holding on to her bruised nose looks up and starts walking over to the brunette.

Seeing the stranger sluggishly advance towards her direction, she instantly steps back only to hit the wall behind her. Oh no! I’m trapped!

“YAH! I said stay away!” She yelps again. The stranger doesn’t listen and she continued walking towards her. The brunette frantically whips her head around searching for anything she could use as a weapon. Her eyes settle on a shiny object and she quickly reaches for it.

The stranger’s eyes bulged out from their eye sockets as she saw what the brunette had decided to pick up. “Yah! Don’t you dare throw that lamp at me!”

Jessica shuts her eyes and was ready to throw the lamp at the stranger when suddenly she feels two soft hands enclosed her wrists gently bringing them above her head. She opens her eyes only to meet the stranger’s serious gaze. She gulps as uneasiness slowly begins to creep up to her. The woman’s face was only a mere two inches away from her flushed ones. They were so close that she could feel the other’s warm breath brush softly upon her lips.

Although she was shocked, she couldn’t help but admire the beautiful face of the stranger before her. Wow. She’s stunning. She looks so much like…an angel.

Her eyes traced the other woman’s face, slowly taking in every detail of her face. Her smooth pale skin seems to be baby soft and her short blonde hair framing her delicate face was as fluffy as cotton candy.

Her gaze makes its way to the center of the stranger’s face; despite the purple-ish spot on her nose, she has to admit it looked perfect as well, it’s sharp and pointed.

Her gaze travels back up from the woman’s nose to her eyebrows. Her brows were perfectly trimmed and her dark eyes glimmered beautifully under the light. They were glossy and bit teary. Probably the result of the pain pulsating from her bruised nose, she assumed.

Lastly, her gaze settles down on the stranger’s red plump lips.

Her lips…it looks so inviting. I just want to…

Jessica immediately blushes at the thought.

“Jessica-sshi, please calm down.” The stranger whispered softly, breaking Jessica’s gaze from her lips to meet her eyes. Jessica blushes again.

Who is this girl?

Her gaze settles back on the stranger’s plump lips.

This isn’t right! What the hell am I doing!?

She gulps. It was tempting. Very tempting. She bites down on her lower lip.

Maybe it wouldn’t hurt if I get a taste right? Just a little bit…

Before she could conjure an argument with herself, she slowly starts inching closer and closer to the stranger’s face.

The blonde’s eyes widen at the sudden movement. What in the world is she doing? Her eyes shift from Jessica’s eyes and lands on the brunette’s lips. She gulps and finds herself moving in as well.

And before they knew it, their lips had met.
