The Owner 2

버클's One Shot Collection

It has been three days since Amber found the phone that was sitting on the chair of the airport and so far, no news about the owner looking for that particular device was found.

The handphone, is now lying down on the table of Amber’s hostel, connected to a plug that feeds the mobile device with its own food. Electricity.

For the past three days, in order to keep the phone alive so that the owner can be found, Amber have been charging it whenever it is close to running out of battery. Why would it run out of battery? Because Amber have been holding onto the device for the past two nights after work, trying to figure out who the owner was so that she could find her, rather than the owner come knocking on her door on her own. And it was surprising that whenever she holds onto the phone to track down its memories, the battery drains and would run out fairly quickly considering the duration she held the phone for. Which is why she needed to feed it every 5-6 hours.

Trying to summarise when she has learnt for the past two days via the phone’s own memory, Amber learnt two things about the owner. Firstly, the owner is pretty much alone for most of her time. Either she is watching dramas or chatting online. Secondly, the owner looked pretty much around her age, if not, a few years younger.

Amber just got home from a busy day at work even though it was her third day at the office, and was preparing to wash up so that she could continue to trace back the memories of the owner. It no longer felt like she wanted to know where the owner is, but more like wanting to know more about the owner. Like her name, more of her personality, her background, etc.

As she walked passed the table that has the handphone, she suddenly heard an unusual ringtone. She is very sure that the ringtone did not come from her mobile device, so it should be the mobile phone that she found a few days prior.

“Finally!” she thought, looking that it was a phone call, caller id was unknown since it was in Korean and Amber still understood minimal Korean. But she could make out that it was an older female calling since it showed “unnie” behind the three-character name in which Amber understood.

“Soo Jungieeeeeee! Remember that I would be arriving tomorrow evening! I will be flying in from Hong Kong!” the owner of the voice spoke in Korean.

“.” Amber cursed in English. She couldn’t understand a single thing the girl on the other line just said and her Korean translator, Min isn’t by her side at this point in time.

“Ugh. What do I do now???” Amber murmured.

“Who are you and what are you doing with my sister’s phone?!” answered the other line in aggression, which seems like she caught what Amber said.

“OHMYGOD! YOU SPEAK ENGLISH!!!!!” Amber exclaimed in relief.

“I said, who are you and what are you doing with my sister’s phone?!” the girl reiterated.

“Uhm uhm… I found this phone on a chair in the airport a few days ago, and I have been looking for the owner ever since, and nobody called for the past few days except having a few messages here and there and you are the first one who called. “Amber explained.

“You mean my sister hasn’t called to look for her phone?! That’s something new… I always thought she couldn’t live without it…” the other line asked in curiosity, tone very much milder than before.

“Yeah. I wondered that same too since she is always on the phone…” Amber murmured once again, but it seems like the other line didn’t catch it this time because “What?” came as a question for her.

“Oh… nothing. I said that my name’s Amber.” She avoided.

“My name’s Jessica. I am the owner’s older sister.”

“You mean you are her real sister?”

“Of course I am real! Do you think I’m virtual?!” she questioned.

“No I don’t mean that way! I just arrived in Korea three days ago and I am still getting used to the culture here…”Amber explained.

Laughter could be heard on the other line before instructions were given to her.

“Look. I am arriving in Korea tomorrow evening, so is it fine for you to meet me at the airport so that you can return my sister’s phone?”

“Yeah sure, it wouldn’t be a problem!”

“Thank you so much!” Jessica thanked.

“No problem! See you soon!” Amber greeted.

“Same here! Goodbye!”

“Bye!”

With that, Amber put down the phone and went on to wash up before heading to bed since she was exhausted from work and the adrenaline rush from the earlier encounter with the owner’s sister. Feeling slightly excited to what is going to happen the following evening.

Amber knocked off work half-an-hour early since work was completed early and she was excited to meet the owner’s sister.

Heading to the airport in high spirits, Amber got there 15 minutes early before the flight from Hong Kong landed.

She decided to walk around and explore by herself before making her way to the belt that Jessica is expected to return.

When Amber got to the belt, she saw a familiar looking lady, standing near the exit of the belt, as if expecting someone. Amber recognised who she was immediately but felt too awkward to say hi and return the phone because you can’t possibly tell the owner her phone has memories right?

After waiting for a while, passengers from the flight came walking out one-by-one, in families, alone or with their other half. But the owner of the phone is still waiting for her sister.

30 minutes passed, and the person in which two people were expecting finally came out, with three bags of alcohol which was bought at the duty free shop in the arrival hall and a big pink luggage. Amber could see the owner running towards her for a hug before the two sisters embraced one another.

“So that is Jessica.” Amber thought.

Amber waited for a while, waiting for a call from Jessica so she could pick it up, and let the phone be reunited with its owner.

While waiting, the two sisters caught up with one another and it seems like Jessica is explaining to what happened the day before, in half English half Korean.

Amber settled down on the chair nearby before hearing the phone ring again.

“Hello?” Amber answered, while looking at Jessica, who seems to be searching for her since she is looking around.

“Is this Amber? Jessica here. I am already here at the airport. Where are you?”

“I am at the belt where your flight came out from.”

“Oh! But I don’t see you. Why don’t you find me instead? I am wearing a black top with jeans” Jessica described.

“Yeah, sure. Hold on.” Amber said and found them not long later since she knew where they were.

“Uhhh…. Hi? I’m Amber.” She tapped Jessica’s shoulder nervously with her right hand while detaching the phone and putting it aside on her left.

“Oh! Hi! I am Jessica! And this is my sister, the owner of the phone, Krystal.” Jessica introduced.

“H-h-hi. My name’s Amber. Amber Liu.” She stuttered.

“I’m Krystal. Thank you for finding my phone! I’ve been trying to search for it but no avail. Thank god you found it!”

“It’s nothing. I would be anxious if I were you too. But why don’t you try calling it to find it? I don’t receive any calls other than your sister’s.” she asked.

“I was in a panic mode for the past few days, trying to retrace my steps and searching the whole house that it slipped my mind to do the most helpful way.” Krystal grinned sheepishly.

“Oh I see… that happens.” Amber replied while rubbing her neck.

“Do you wanna have dinner with us? Take it as a way of thanking you!” Jessica suggested.

“Nah. I have something on later, some other day I guess?” Amber replied with a tint of disappointment.

“Oh… if that is the case, why don’t you give me your number? We’ll meet some other day.” Krystal suggested a plan B.

With that, Amber went to hang out with Min and other friends in a happy mode even though she returned the phone to its owner, but it was exchanged with something even better. Her number and a chance to be friends.

A/N: sorrry i have been away and not updating for some time. things happened a few weeks ago and i wasnt in the mood to write anything. but when i regained the mood, i started to get busy with work so i didnt have the time to write anything. there would definitely be anotherr chapter to this mini-fic, but i am still not sure how long it would go. but i can guess that it would be finishing in the next one or two chapters ^^

to all Muslims who are fasting out there, good luck with that! i know it takes a lot of discipline to do so and i would probably sleep the whole day for a month while fasting hahahaha xD but bear with it! you all can feast once the month is overr for Hari Raya!^^
