That Cute Friend
My so-called-friendship with Kim Taeyeon got more intense. We literally meet every weekday now. When we couldn’t meet for lunch, we’d meet up for coffee that (almost everytime) got extended to dinner.
On Friday, we didn’t go to lunch together since she had a lunch meeting, so of course, we’d go for coffee. But minutes before office hour ends, Taeyeon told me she wants patbingsoo. So we’ll go to a place that sells the best patbingsoo in town.
“This is the place?” Taeyeon asks when we arrive at the small but cozy café.
“Yep. I promise you, you’ll have the best patbingsoo you’ve ever had in here.”
“I better. I drove through traffic for this.” She said jokingly.
We enter the café and memories of my ex come rushing through my mind.
“Nice place.”
But Taeyeon’s voice erases all that. She looks excited and goes ahead to browse the menu board.
I moved on from my ex and heading for the wrong person again. I let out a sigh before I stand beside Taeyeon.
It seems she heard my sigh because she turns to look at me, “What’s with the sigh?”
“Nothi-”
“Unnie?”
No way. Is that?
I turn my body around to see my ex-girlfriend with her handsome boyfriend right in front of me.
“Minseo.”
She lets go her hold on her boyfriend and hugs me instead. Well it’s an awkward hug for me.
“How are you, Unnie?”
“I’m good. How are you?” I slightly look at her boyfriend.
“I’m good too. Um… this is my boyfriend.”
The guy offers his hand and says his name, which I don’t deem worth to remember.
“Who are you with, Unnie?” she smiles and looks at Taeyeon who‘s observing this whole conversation with a disapproving look on her face?
“Kim Taeyeon. I’m Miyoung’s friend.”
Wait, what? What’s with the mention of my Korean name all of a sudden? I did tell her about my old-fashioned name and told her that only my family and close friends (like Soonkyu) would call me that.
Minseo looks taken aback a little bit but smiles nevertheless and shakes hand with Taeyeon, “Ji Minseo. Miyoung Unnie’s…….” she looks at me for a split second, “old friend.”
Taeyeon gives her a stiff smile as if she doesn’t even want to smile in the first place.
Minseo turns to me again, “You’re about to order, Unnie?”
“Yeah. We just got here.”
I keep stealing glances at Taeyeon since she looks annoyed by the minute.
“Oh, okay. We’re about to leave now, but we need to catch up, Unnie! It’s been so long since we last talked.”
I scoff mentally. Whose fault is that?
But I smile politely instead, “Sure.”
She gives me another awkward hug (why the hell does she do it anyway?) before she leaves with her boyfriend in tow.
After that, we make our order and sit in one of the table.
Taeyeon still hasn’t smile and she even has a slight frown now.
“Taeyeon-ah, are you okay?”
“Mm? I’m okay. Why?”
“I don’t know. You looked excited when we arrive here. But you’re frowning right now.”
“Sorry. It’s just….. Was that your ex that you told me about?”
I raise my eyebrows, “Minseo?”
She nods.
“Yes, that’s her. Why?”
She clicks her tongue, “The thought of you being hurt just irritates me. And she hurt you, in a mean way.”
What the? Is she jealous?! Or is she being protective?
Whatever it is, it’s making my heart jitters.
“She hurt me in the past. I’m totally fine now.”
She still frowns and I feel like pinching her cheeks now!
So I do.
“Ouch! Yah!” she rubs her cheek and I laugh.
“Don’t frown, please? I’m fine. Happy even. I got you now, right?”
She finally smiles, “Right. You got me now.”
That totally has different meanings for both of us and it doesn’t matter to me.
Having Kim Taeyeon in whichever way in my life is making me happy.
