The Perfect Recipe

Sunggyu had never been so nervous in his entire life. Okay, he probably had, but now seemed to be a critical moment. He had managed to break through the enemies' lines and to get closer to their base than he ever had before. And even if, from an outsider's point of view, it was just a game and didn't mean that much, to him it did. Because he was fighting against a player he had never beaten before, not even once. And that was unusual, since he was one of the best players himself.

So there he was, his body tense and his breathing almost nonexistent. He was a mess of clicking and typing. And that was exactly when his roommate decided to come and talk to him. Sungyeol was a good roommate, he really was. They got along well, the younger's bubbly personality contrasting with Sunggyu's silent one. However, it was in times like these when the elder really wished the other would understand that it was a bad time to discuss with him about whether having a chimpanzee as a pet was a good idea or not — or whatever it was this time.

He focused on his game, sending a small troop to destroy the enemy’s base through a defense breach while he kept the biggest part of his army on the main battlefield. If that group didn’t survive, he would just have to send another one, but he was almost sure the little group would manage to go unnoticed, as the battle was raging everywhere else. From time to time, he hummed, signaling Sungyeol that he was listening, even if it was far from being the case.

“Hyung, are you listening?”

His enemy’s army was slowly starting to gain ground against his own and he gritted his teeth. “Of course, I’m listening.”

Then he got an alert saying that his base was under attack and he panicked. He cursed mentally. How could he even forget to place guards around his base? It was his goddamn idea in the first place! His army was weakening more and more with each passing seconds and now his base was about to be taken! A look at the small troop he had sent before and he realized they were all about to die already. He tried a desperate move, sending his army back to his base, but was soon overwhelmed and, when his sentence appeared on his screen in red letters, he almost threw his keyboard against his screen.

“! How the hell could I be that stupid?! Who the does that guy think he is?”

Just as he let out the last words, he realized he had just indirectly admitted he hadn’t listened to a single word his roommate was saying. He slowly turned his head towards the man, whose face was red. At first, Sunggyu thought it was because of anger and was ready for one of his tantrums, but he soon realized at the way the other was biting his lips and avoiding his eyes, that it was something completely different.

“Sungyeol-ah, I’m sorry, I didn’t…”

“… listen. I know.” He looked up and pouted. “You never listen to me.”

Sunggyu sighed and passed a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry, okay? It’s just… You know, that guy I still haven’t beaten yet? Well, I thought I’d win this time, but… I didn’t.”

His friend rolled his eyes. “You know, you should live in the real world sometimes.” Before the other could retort anything, he added: “But it’s too bad for you! You’ll never know what I said then!”

The elder frowned. He hated it when people started to tell him something and never finished. He disliked secrets and veiled truths. Blame his curiosity. Of course, the other knew that and was going to make him pay for his lack of attention.

“Come on, tell me. I’m listening now!” The other shook his head, a victorious smile on his lips.

Sunggyu repeated his question a few times then lost his patience and took the other into a headlock, tickling him to make him spill everything – even though he was sure he could not understand a single word the other was uttering in between his giggles. But after some times, the few words he could make out sounded like pleading, so he finally stopped and sat next to his friend on the floor, where they had fallen during their ‘fight’.

As his friend was silent again next to him, he threatened to start again with his tickling, but Sungyeol soon stopped him. “Stop! Stop! Stop! I’m going to tell you, okay? Just… just stop with the tickling!” The younger then suddenly looked serious and nervous again and Sunggyu couldn’t help but think it was an abnormal thing for him. “It was easier when you were looking at your screen and you weren’t paying attention.”

The elder slapped his back in a friendly manner. “Come on, what did you do that you’re so afraid to tell me?”

Sungyeol looked at him and hesitated. “You’re going to make fun of me.”

Sunggyu couldn’t help the smile on his face and Sungyeol couldn’t help but feel attracted to that smile once again. “Nothing unusual. I thought you’d be used to it by n-”

“I think I like you, hyung.”

The elder chuckled. “Well, of course I like you too Sungyeol-ah. We’re not friends for nothing!”

But the serious look on the other’s face was still there. “No hyung, not as a friend.”

Sunggyu gulped with difficulty. Why was his throat feeling so dry all of a sudden? “I… I don’t understand.” And he really didn’t. His mind didn’t let him. Because if, even for one second, he let his brain emit the possibility of Sungyeol liking him in that way, as a lover, then his heart would go wild and not calm down. He couldn’t take that risk because he was living with that man, with his friend. He couldn’t just let his heart that he had kept under control for all this time do what he wanted, blow up with all the affection he had for the other, get rejected and break down for him to pick up the pieces.

He had to be mistaken. That was it – a weird mistake or a cruel joke.

For all the time of his mental debate, his roommate stared at him in astonishment. “Are you kidding me? Hyung, I’m telling you I like you! A couple kind of like, you know?” But Sunggyu’s face remained frozen, still as confused. He even shook his head slightly, indicating that he still didn’t get it. Sungyeol sighed and ruffled in his own hair in annoyance. “Really Sunggyu, how oblivious can you actually get? How the hell am I supposed to make you understand?!” The elder just shrugged lightly, his face still emotionless. He was acting like a kid and it was starting to really annoy the other. “Seriously, this is getting ridiculous.” He then decided that an action was worth a thousand words.

He got closer and, before hesitating for a second, his hand frozen mid-air, he slowly placed his hand on the other’s cheek and, after looking at them for another second, closed the distance between their lips. He wished Sunggyu would have smiled. Sungyeol had somehow always wondered what his smile tasted like. But he quickly backed away – just a small kiss dropped on unmoving lips. He looked into his friend’s eyes he liked so much.

“I like you.”

As he saw something, he wasn’t sure what, pass in those small eyes, he kissed him again quickly.

“I really like you, Sunggyu.”

This time, he was sure the feeling he could peek at through his friend’s eyes was something positive, so he repeated his action and his words. He didn’t know how many kisses it took, but he didn’t care. With each one, the other’s lips curved a tiny bit upwards, until Sunggyu was smiling widely, that bright smile that he liked so much.

“Sunggyu, I li-”

The elder cut him off after his multiple kisses and confessions. “You like me, I know.” Then he frowned, even though his huge smile was still on his lips. “That’s not a reason to forget about the honorifics though. You’re still younger than me.”

Sungyeol rolled his eyes. “I’m not sure. Who’s the one who actually froze for like ten minutes because of a confession? Not me! And the first thing you say after you start speaking again is jus-”

The elder shut him up with a small kiss and the other seemed to suddenly forget the end of his sentence. “Sorry. But I’m still older though.”

“Seriously, you-”

This time, the kiss surprised him enough to make him forget all traces of protest. As it lasted more than all the previous ones, every one of Sunggyu’s gesture made it special and important – the way he pulled the other closer to him, a hand on his waist, the way he seemed to trace every one of his features, his fingers softly brushing the soft skin of his face, as if to memorize everything.

Just as they separated, a noise echoed in the room, making the younger jump in surprise. Sunggyu looked up at his computer and answered the other’s questioning glance. “He proposes to have another match.” Sungyeol didn’t say anything, but Sunggyu could see the pleading in his eyes and he chuckled. “Yes, I’m going to accept.” He saw the other’s face fall at that. “But not before saying this…” He kissed him once again.

“I like you too.”
