Watch the stars

The Perfect Recipe

This was somehow inspired by "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles.

Everyone in Infinite knew about it. Well, it wasn’t like Woohyun tried to hide it in the first place. He had just come back to the dorm one day and, after making sure that no manager was in sight, he had proudly announced that he had a girlfriend.

But there were some things that only Hoya knew about – the problems. Woohyun had always been the kind of person to announce it loudly when things were going his way, to boast and to make sure everyone knew about his awesome life. It annoyed the others sometimes, but after so many years of living together, it was safe to say that they had gotten used to it. However, when things didn’t go his way, Woohyun tended to lock himself up in his room and keep silent about it. And that’s when Hoya came in.

Even if he was busy, he always took the time to go check on him when he knew that his friend wasn’t alright. He wasn’t really the comforting type of person, no. He never had the right words, or the right gestures that made people feel better, but he always went to the small windowless room nevertheless when he knew his friend needed him. Then he would drag him out to go for a drink, or crack a few of his stupid jokes that no one found funny but still managed to somehow put a smile on the other’s face.

The instances of Woohyun feeling down were getting more and more frequent and, if he had boasted a lot about having a girlfriend, Hoya really didn’t envy him when he saw how much trouble that got him. One day, she had thrown a tantrum because Woohyun had to sing with a beautiful young idol for a special stage. Another day, she had called him almost constantly for the whole day and, when her boyfriend finally had time to take a look at his phone, she had complained about him not having enough time for her. Hoya didn’t doubted she was a nice girl – they had all seen her a couple of times – but she was too demanding. She was dating an idol and she must have known the implications of that status.

So, one day, when Woohyun didn’t come out of his room for dinner, claiming that he wasn’t hungry and that he had to lose some weight anyway, Hoya went to see him. When he entered the room, he actually have trouble finding his friend in the midst of all the mountains of crumpled paper.

“Woohyun-ah?”

His friend’s head popped out of the mountain of paper surrounding what must have been the desk and looked at him with tired eyes. He sighed and Hoya asked the usual question as he was making his way to the bed, where he sat, his back against the wall. “What happened?”

Woohyun sighed and passed a hand through his blonde hair before going to sit next to his friend. Hoya took a guess that he knew was most probably right. “Mijoo again?” A nod. “What is it this time?”

Yet another sigh. Hoya wondered how many of them he was going to hear that day. Maybe he should count. “She asked me to write her a song.” Hoya chuckled and gained an angry glare for his friend. “It’s not funny!”

He tried to keep his smirk under control, but he just couldn’t. “Sorry, but that sounds really cliché.”

The blonde man leaned his head against the wall. “As cliché as it sounds, she still asked me to. She told me that if I loved her I should write a song for her.”

The other rolled his eyes. “Well, just write one of your greasy songs and she’ll be happy.”

“That’s the problem.” He turned to his friend with an overly dramatic look on his face. “I can’t write a single line.”

There were a few seconds of silence before Hoya spoke again. “And let me guess. She said she would break up with you if you didn’t write that song?”

Another sigh came, giving him just the answer he needed. Three.

It wasn’t the first time she came with that kind of threat. Every time she complained about something Woohyun did or didn’t, she gave him that same ultimatum. And every time, he just did his best to meet her expectations – expectations that were too high to be able to maintain while going on with his busy schedule. But Hoya knew his friend was just like that. When he liked something, he gave it his all, and same went for his relationships. He gave her his all.

The fourth sigh tore him out of his thoughts and he smacked his friend’s thigh, effectively making him jump. “Come on, let’s go drink something!”

Woohyun looked at him with a small smile – he knew this was coming – but then quickly frowned when he remembered something. “You have your drama shooting tomorrow. You should rest.”

Hoya just rolled his eyes and dragged his depressed friend out of his room and out of the dorm. They went to drink a few shots in a bar they knew well and where the owner always reserved them a table that was almost out of sight from the rest of the room, so that they wouldn’t have to worry about the fans. When they went out, taking advantage of the anonymity of the night that had fallen quite some time ago, they went to buy some ice cream like the kids they were deep inside and lied down on the riverbank, looking at the stars.

* * *

It was a week later that they all came back to the dorm and Woohyun quickly went to his room without saying a word. Hoya was not the only one to notice, he never was. But there was this unspoken agreement that he was the one to drag the main vocal out of his room. It had started long ago, because he was always the first one to worry about his friend and it became a habit.

So, after exchanging knowing looks with the other members, he grabbed a couple of snacks because they hadn’t eaten anything for hours and went to his friend’s room. This time, the latter was rolled up in his bed and only a bright blonde mop of hair could be seen under the edge of the comforter. Hoya made his way to the bed and dragged the comforter down to see his friend’s seemingly emotionless face.

“What is it this time?”

His friend looked up at him from his lying position on the bed. A small, sad smile formed on his lips and when he talked his tone was bitter. “I guess you won’t have to cheer me up anymore. She broke up with me.”

Hoya didn’t really know what to do or say. Of course, he was expecting the state of his friend to be because of his girlfriend, but he hadn’t thought that she would actually make one of her threats come true. So he did the only thing he could think of – he pulled Woohyun up and took him in his arms. Hoya had never been one to show his affection a lot, so the act surprised his friend a little, but he let himself drown in the warm embrace.

“You know what’s the weirdest thing?” Hoya shook his head and the other felt it, his head against the crook of his neck. “I don’t even really feel sad.” His friend remained silent, so he took it as a sign to continue. “I’ve been with her for almost a year, and yet now that’s it over I don’t even feel sad. I think I’m more relieved than anything.”

“Well, of course you are. She freaking made you live in hell all this time.”

Woohyun wasn’t really sure why. The words, uttered in the usual playful tone, were nothing really special. But his friend, who had to bear with him complaining for months and months, had never said anything about how bad he thought that girl treated him. And he was always there, even when he was busy and tired and probably had a hundred other things to do. But still, those facts just proved that he was a good friend.

No, what stoke him was the way Hoya’s grip on him that tightened ever so lightly, his voice breaking a little and the quick heartbeats he could hear from his position against him. Or maybe it was just his imagination. Maybe the words that Mijoo had spoken to him just a few hours ago were having too much impact on his mind. He hesitated before speaking again in a low voice, almost a whisper. “Do you know what she told me?” Hoya remained quiet and he went on. “That I was a good boyfriend.” His friend snorted. “That she did all of that because she needed the confirmation that she was the most important for me… Do you know whom she was jealous of?”

He felt Hoya tense and he pulled away a little to look at him in the eye. “You.”

But then Hoya closed the distance between their lips and it all made sense. The way, the day he had announced he had a girlfriend, he was the only one with jaw and fists clenched tight. The way his smile wasn’t genuine when he said he was happy for him. The way he had always been there for him in hard times.

There, against Hoya’s warm lips, Woohyun felt a smile creep up to his lips, his first happy smile in what felt like ages.

And, in the end, maybe Mijoo was right. Maybe if he had really loved her, he could have written a song because the words came to him then.

Let’s lie down together and watch the stars

Forget about tomorrow, that we had to grow

Laugh like kids, dream like boys, cry like teens, love like men

I don’t care what they think, leave the whispers, let them blend

The colors of the sky, deep blue, light black, and gold

Let’s lie down together and watch the stars
