With a Ribbon
Student CouncilThe moment I opened the door, my mom ran at me in excitement, “Honey!” she said, “Someone left a nice gift for you! Oh it’s so beautiful, who could it be from?” she dragged me into the living room as I almost tripped while taking off my shoes. The big white box with a giant red ribbon on our coffee table was hard to miss. My dad sat in his armchair, reading his newspaper but whenever he peeked over the black and white print, he had a look of disapproval.
I had an inkling of who it was from, it could only be from Jungkook, I rolled my eyes and opened the box. Inside was a burgundy collared dress with a floral print. Beside it was a shoe bag with the most beautiful pair of black leather ankle boots with gold detailing. This was too much. I couldn’t go through the box anymore. My mom didn’t stop though as she pulled out a smaller white box with yet another red ribbon tied around it. She forced it into my hand and told me to open which I did, robotically. Inside was a little purple jewel hung on a dainty silver chain. At this point, my shock and surprise had started to evolve into mild anger. I finally found the card inside the box which read:
“To Euijin,
I’m sorry for what happened the other night and I’m sorry for worrying you with my absence this week. Allow me to make it up to you. Please accept these gifts and accompany me as a date for a dinner party my parents are hosting. I have a stylist and makeup artist arranged to come see you tomorrow afternoon and a car will pick you up later in the evening. I will be seeing you tomorrow night.
Once again, I’m sorry,
Jungkook.”
He signed off and suddenly, the mild rage became moderate and I packed up everything and brought them back outside, placing them on the doorstep. My mom looked at me as I closed the door with a look of horror. “Euijin, what’s wrong?” She asked. I couldn’t keep it in, the rage had jumped to extreme and I started screaming, “He thinks he can buy me? He thinks he can own me? He thinks that he can just do whatever he wants and he thinks that will make me like him more?” the words rolled out as my mom approached me to calm me down, engulfing me in her warm hug. “Honey, calm down.” She said and my head. My dad folded his paper and also took me in his own warm hug, “Oh my sweet pea.” Was all he said before letting me go, “My sweet, stubborn, bullheaded Euijin. This boy cares enough for you to give you all these nice things, why can’t you give him a chance?” he said gently with a smile. That’s why he had that look earlier, he knew I was going to blow up.
“I don’t deserve anything that nice,” I said to me mom while my dad went to pick up the box from outside. “You deserve the greatest things in the world, my sweet child.” She chuckled and hugged me tighter.
