Trouble I'm In

White Smoke

By the time the light of Seoul were visible from the highway, it was getting close to midnight. Seung Hyun pulled up into the basement carpark of our villa and the both of us wearily got out of the car. I was exhausted physically and mentally from the long drive and the anxiety that had settled into my chest. Knowing my heavy heart, Seung Hyun pulled me close and together we walked towards the elevator and up to our home. He kissed the top of my head and led me to the bedroom, helping me take my jumper then socks and shoes off before tucking me into bed.

"Let tomorrow's worries be for tomorrow. Just rest now." I listened to him, and wrapped the thin blanket around me before falling into a deep sleep.

It wasn't even sunrise when I awoke, the sky had lightened but it was still a dreary grey. The entire aparment was silent except for the slow ticking of the clock on the bedside table and the slow churning of the refridgerator trying to keep its contents cool. Seung Hyun slept quietly and soundly, turned over with his face facing the large bay windows. I stared at him in the darkness, thinking of the words he said to me yesterday. It was the time for me to apologise, own up to whatever misgivings I gave Imo, no matter how small. It might not save their marriage but she at least deserved some honesty.

The sound of the doorbell caught me off-guard, so mistimed that I thought I was imagining it, except it rang again. This time Seung Hyun was stirred awake.

"I'll get it," I told him and crawled out of bed. Wrapping my light kimono over me I walked through the living space and towards the intercom which had a video feed of the entrance. Nara stood there. Her face looked away from the camera, but I could tell it was her from a mile away. My heart sank to the bottom of my stomach.

"Seung Hyun. Seung Hyun!" I cried, sending him hurtling out of the bedroom towards me, his eyes distressed.

"What is it? What happened?"

"Nara is here..."

"Now?" I stepped away from the screen so that he could get a better look and all that Seung Hyun could do in response was shake his head in disbelief before covering his hands with his face.

"She knows, that's why she's here isn't she?" I asked him. Seung Hyun let out an exhale and took my hand comfortingly.

"We don't know that for sure. Let's just listen to what she has to say." The doorbell rang again, it's loud echoes unnerving me so that I jumped.

"Let her in," Seung Hyun said.

He had his arms around me the whole time, supporting me as Nara walked into our foyer in her parka and tights, her hair ruffled from the slight wind outside.

"Sorry, you guys must have still been in bed," she said as she took off her shoes and walked right past us towards the kitchen. We both watched her, trying to get a read on what she was thinking, what she was feeeling, but the kid just didn't give off anything. Nara just grabbed a cup, a bottle of orange juice and poured herself a drink.

"How'd you get here?" I asked, sitting myself beside her on the kitchen stool.

"Ahjussi was awake anyway and I need to talk to you."

"About what?" Nara stopped herself mid-gulp and lowered her glass onto the counter. I could feel Seung Hyun's hand on my shoulder squeeze and I bit my lip in worry. She fiddled with her fingers a little bit before looking straight at me, something like a sad smile on her lips.

"I have a friend, her name is Joo Young, you might have met her before. Anyway, she has a sister who recently got married and they went for their honeymoon to Busan last weekend. I went to the wedding, the bride and groom looked so good and so happy. So on the way there, turns out they got into a car accident...a drunk truck driver rammed into them on the way there. I was there when Joo Young's mum called her to tell her the new. Both were killed instantly, I just came from the funeral yesterday-" Nara's voice broke as tears flooded down and instantly Seung Hyun and I were on our feet, engulfing her in our arms. This is crazy, this is absolutely insane. How many misfortunes does a sweet girl like her have to endure before God decides that it's enough?

"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked her. "You stupid girl, why did you go alone?" Nara gripped my shirt tightly and tried to calm her tears while we soothed her. Seung Hyun and I gave each other knowing glances, tears our eyes.

"I've never seen anyone so sad. Joo Young and her parents, they were both wailing so much, beating their chest as their body couldn't physically contain how they felt. I didn't know it could happen. I didn't know anyone could be so sad."

"Oh, baby," I said, wiping away her tears. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that."

"I don't want anyone to be like that when I'm gone." My hands froze once I registered her words and Seung Hyun brought them down to my lap before they would start to visibly shake.

"Nara," he said calmly. "You're not going anywhere."

"I am, we all are. I just, I don't want to put you two and mum and dad in so much pain."

"You know someone famous once said this," Seung Hyun told her. "It's better to have loved and lost then never have loved at all. When our loved ones leave us, the amount of sadness we have well be equivalent to the amount of joy they have given us. So when our loved ones die, especially in such a terrible accident like that, we will grieve. Then after we have grieved we will remember and we will use those memories to help us live. That's the way it is, but it won't be that way for you. Not yet, not now."

"...I don't want it to be my time."

"It doesn't have to be," I reassured her, grasping onto her hand.

"Is it going to hurt?" she asked me.

"Just a little, but that pain will give you the strength to live for a long, long, long time."

"A long, long, long time..." she repeated. "Or it takes me from this world."

"Those who fight will be rewarded, and you're a fighter. I know you are."

"And we've got your back," Seung Hyun said. "With so many people around you, how on earth can you lose?" He pulled her in tight and I watched as a glint of determination flashed in her face.

I don't know who you are, I said to myself, but I want to thank you because for giving your life you got my sister to protect hers.
