Shim Changmin was brought into the world as a healthy young child. Cradled in the warm hands of his mother, the little baby with just a speck of hair at that time let out his first cry; all the while taking in his first deep breath of fresh air.

…little did he know then that a few hours later just a few door down the hospital, she too would be born.

5 Years Old.

Shim Changmin often shared his plastic bucket with her as they both spent their time determined to make the most elegant sand castle known to mankind. While she held the bucket upright in place with her small tiny hands, his little arms would struggle to carry the bountiful amount of sand into the thing.

Although they never succeeded on making their far fetched childish dreams come true, they’d smile innocently at each other, both displaying their lack of teeth they had inside their jaws.

Like how individuals would daily brush their teeth, building sand castles was their own routine. During recess, they casually would find themselves together like magnets that naturally attracted one another.

They were both very little back then.

She was his play mate.

10 Years Old.

They grew up. Growing taller and taller as the months flew on by. Towering over their classmates they both garnered the title of being the tallest male and female student within their school. They were entering into the stages of puberty where hormones soon began to take control.

During lunch breaks they often shared each other’s food with one another, both exchanging bit by bit of what they initially came to school with.

As if perfectly matched like complementary colours, she’d enjoy the strawberry jam smothered on one half of the sandwich, while he preferred the rich taste of the thick peanut butter.

If there was one thing they both lived by it was the simple rule of NEVER leaving one trace of food left behind. It was a rule that they took seriously as if their very own lives depended on it. All the microscopic crumbs must be devoured into their small, yet growing bodies.

They were both just children back then.

She was the one who always sat right next to him as they deliciously ate their food.

15 Years Old.

Naturally like many others, they grew apart.

He had his boys, while she had her girls.

It was the awkward time when the opposite would tease each other non-stop for no apparent reason as an excuse to hear the others’ voice.

Shim Changmin paid $5.00 for a candy gram when Valentine’s Day arose –a decadent dark chocolate lollipop that had an initial bitter taste as it touched one’s tongue, but would gradually fade to a surprising slight tint of sweetness.

A small light soft pink ribbon wrapped itself upon the delicious treat as he gently placed it inside her desk just minutes before school started.

 He watched her from across the room as she spotted his gift. He carefully watched her every move as she slowly discovered the small tightly folded piece of paper he had thrown in there as well.

He saw her face slowly change as her eyes twinkled a little bit more, as her cheeks developed a soft red tint, as the corner of began to rise up into a sly small smile….he saw it all from his seat.

His heart pounded excitedly as his mind flashed like a million snap shots of a camera taking pictures. He only wished that he had the ability to read her mind at that moment…wondering what she had thought about the little note he had written on the plain white sheet of lifeless paper which read:

To the girl which my heart craves for like the most delicious chocolate.

Did you know that you had the ability to creep up inside my thoughts unknowingly like the taste of this candy’s sweetness?

It’s the type of feeling that one doesn’t want to go away, but instead always wants to remember.

I hope that one day, my arms can wrap around you like this ribbon wrapped around the candy gram.
