Race 16. The Top
Drifting HeartsL.Joe walked up the stairs and saw her car pull up to the starting line. It was different from the straightaway, their track had a sharp turn right before the finish line. “Interesting to see you back up here.” Eric greeted him as he got comfortable to watch the race.
“You weren’t expecting me?” L.Joe asked him. “Why?”
“It didn’t seem like you could come back after that horrific loss your brother had. But you managed to win just now.” Eric commented. “I’m sure there’s a secret to that.”
L.Joe smirked at him, “You would be correct.” They sat down and watched as Aria’s opponent pulled up next to her. He got out of the car and walked over to Aria’s window.
“Hey, princess! You should just quit now.” He said loudly over the crowd that was gathering. L.Joe noticed Aria said nothing but just gave him a smirk.
“You sure talk a lot for someone with an even track record.” Hyeongkon shouted from the crowd and L.Joe saw him walk out towards Aria.
“Not even going to defend yourself, sweetheart?” He taunted her. “You’re a girl, you cannot be the top racer around here. Where’s the real guy? Are you him?” He asked, pointing at Hyeongkon.
“Who needs to defend anything when my track record says it all?” Aria said, calmly, looking at the track ahead. She rolled up her window coolly and ignored the rest of his words.
L.Joe heard him continue on about how she was lying about her skills, that someone else was racing for her. Or she was racing for someone else. He went on and on until Micky came by, “Yah! Shut up, Jaehyung and just race her! You wanted a race with the champ and you got one.” He said.
This guy, Jaehyung, sighed as he walked back to his car. L.Joe smirked to himself as he knew this guy would end up with his foot in his mouth. Aria was the real deal and he would lose really bad.
A beautiful woman stood between the cars and signaled go and Aria took off first. Jaehyung wasn’t far behind but he had a delay in his start for some reason. L.Joe figured it was because he watched the woman’s assets when she gave the signal, they were rather distracting for a man without commitment.
He caught up to Aria though and they were neck in neck until she her NOS and got ahead of his car completely right before the turn. He watched as her car drifted slightly into the turn and continue out, passing the finish line with ease.
She pulled her car to a stop and away from anywhere Jaehyung could crash into it. He knew she was smirking as he stumbled into the finish line because he didn’t drift into the turn properly. He parked and angrily got out of his car, “You cheated!” He shouted at her.
L.Joe could feel her eye roll from up there. He stood up before walking downstairs to go meet her. “Hey kid!” Eric called after him.
“What?” He asked.
“I already told you, you shouldn’t try for her. She won’t accept you.” Eric said.
“Is she already with you?” L.Joe turned around and asked him straight.
Eric gave him a look of disbelief, “What? No, I’m too old for her. I’m old enough to be her dad.” He scoffed at the thought.
L.Joe smiled, “Good. Then you don’t need to worry about me. I can handle it.” He told him, running away before Eric could say anything else. He walked outside and saw Jaehyung being restrained by two well-built men as Micky questioned him.
He approached Aria from behind as the rest of the crowd mobbed the scene together. He whispered quietly out loud, not really directing his question anywhere, “What’s happening?”
Aria crossed her arms over her chest, “This jerk isn’t willing to pay up.” She said loudly for everyone to hear. “I won fair and square, didn’t I?” She rallied the crowd as they all him.
“Taec, Chan. Deal with him outside. And bring the money back to lovely Miss Aria when you’re done.” Micky told the two men and they dragged Jaehyung away to somewhere hidden and the crowd dispersed as rapidly as it formed.
“Good job today.” L.Joe said to her with a smile.
“Same to you.” She replied coolly. “Same time tomorrow.” She told him before walking off to go collect her money.
He smiled to himself at the victory, he just spoke to her in public and even though she pretended not to know him. She acknowledged him, despite the crowd and that was an accomplishment in itself.
He ran after her and hid behind a corner when he saw Jaehyung’s face a bit bruised and Aria’s money tossed to her. “Thanks, boys.” She said.
“Don’t mention it. Though, you should stop racing guys who don’t wanna pay up.” The one named Chan told her.
She gave them a small smile, “Tell them to stop challenging me then.” She said walking away, she spotted L.Joe and met up with him when she was out of sight.
“What do you need, L.Joe?” She asked him.
“I forgot that my brothers left already, could you quite possibly give me a ride home?” He asked meekly.
She laughed at his face when he made the request. “I’ll drive around and come and get you. But you might as well just sleep at my place, I have an extra room and we can start practice tomorrow early.” She told him, giving him a wink and walking to get her car.
It took him a moment to process the information, but his jaw dropped when he did. He would be sleeping over at her place. Her place… That was her private life, somewhere no one else seemed to have gotten to. The shock rang through him still when her car pulled up.
The window rolled down, “Hey, yo carrot top. Are you getting in or what?” She asked and it knocked him out of his numbness.
“Y-Yess.” He stammered and opened the door quickly. He buckled up before they zoomed off.
