Race 10. The Youngest
Drifting HeartsChangjo gulped nervously before turning to his brothers in despair. He knew he wouldn't be eligible to be a driver either.
He had just learned to drive being the youngest, after all. He had done nothing to perfect his skills or to learn how to go faster.
"I already know who the driver of your group is going to be. So stop taking your sweet time." Aria said irritated. She crossed her arms over her chest as she watched Changjo make haste, afraid of her wrath.
"You already know who will be the driver? Then why bother test driving with each of us?" CAP asked her. "It's a waste of time."
"No, it's not. Everyone deserves a chance. Besides, if I just picked who I know it will be, then wouldn't that be seen as favoritism regardless?" Aria remarked as she climbed back into the car and waited for Changjo to have his turn.
"Drive to the starting line." She told him. "You might as well give it a go at driving."
"But you know I'm the youngest and least experienced at driving out of all of them." Changjo told her. He watched as Mia went back to stand in the middle to signal go.
"And it doesn't matter. When she says go, you drive." Aria said. Mia started the countdown.
3, 2, 1, go.
Changjo got off the starting line quicker than Ricky did, but it could have been due to his anxiety. He might have gotten a false start if Mia hadn't timed it well. He zoomed ahead and got in front of Hyeongkon, his hands were shaking the whole time.
"Stop worrying. You're fine." Aria assured him as he slid into the turn, losing some speed but still managing to stay ahead.
"You think so?" Changjo turned to ask her, but at the same time he turned the wheel, edging him away from the inner track and Hyeongkon used that to sneak on the inside.
"Well, you were until you did that." Aria told him. She sat back calmly as Changjo struggled with the wheel to keep it steady in a constant loop on the track.
They passed the first lap mark and Hyeongkon had eased ahead to a comfortable full car ahead of Changjo. He panicked again and turned the wheel rapidly to try and make a pass but at his speed they lurched out improperly.
Aria took control of the wheel from the passenger seat and got them back in a solid direction as Hyeongkon hit Nos and zoomed past the finish line. He parked his car before going up to his baby for another kiss.
She eased the car into the turn and fixed their trajectory. "Press on the brake slowly." She instructed Changjo and he followed her precisely.
They slowed down into the finish line before coming to a complete stop. She made the wheel straight and pulled up the handbrake. "Get out." She said and Changjo scurried out of the car and onto the safety of land.
She took a deep breath in before she let the air out slowly. If she hadn't managed to get the car back in control, they would have crashed. Badly, too. This giving everyone a fair chance thing was getting weary on her.
If only she hadn't taken that lesson seriously from Andy, then she wouldn't have had to put her life in danger just now. She shook the fear out of her body before climbing out of the car, she had to keep her cool in front of these guys. She already knew CAP underestimated her big time but now she was showing her skills.
"Are you okay, Aria?" Hyeongkon asked her, "Need a drink?"
Aria smiled at him, "I would be good with a soda, thanks, Hyeongkon oppa." She said.
"Let's take a break then." Hyeongkon suggested as he gestured for all the boys to come by his living room.
They all sat on the couch together as he threw soda cans all around. Aria took the soda can from Niel and gave it back to Hyeongkon.
"You're young and you're next, and I already almost crashed today. I don't need you hyped up on sugar and caffeine." Aria said, handing him a bottle of water.
"You think I will get hyper?" Niel jumped up as he threw a tantrum, the soda he had gotten was actually his favorite. Orange imported soda. He rarely got a chance to drink it.
"You're already jumpy now." She commented, throwing him a glare. "So take a chill pill and remember, you aren't going to be the driver either."
"Then why are we even doing this? We might as well just practice with the real driver. The more practice he gets, the better." CAP said exasperatedly.
"You're acting like you're wasting your time waiting for your brothers to drive first. Just because you're the oldest doesn't mean anything in my book." She replied. "Age is nothing but a number."
"So then why not just let us practice in the first place?" CAP asked.
"When your driver gets picked, he won't need that much time to practice. I am the teacher remember?" Aria said, standing and walking away. "I'm gonna take a walk."
Hyeongkon and Mia were left with the boys and CAP cursed loudly. "You know she's right." Mia said, speaking for the first time.
"What do you mean?" Chunji asked her.
"Everyone deserves a chance. That was the whole idea of this midnight race. Everyone deserves a chance to make some money when they need it. Which is why she is giving all of you a chance." Mia explained to them.
"But she already said that she knows who our driver will be. So to race against everyone he will need practice." CAP said, "We got blindsided last race and we can't afford to do the same thing again."
"But this is Aria. If your driver is worthy enough to race, then he won't need practice. He will just need refinement. And that only takes two trial runs on each track." Mia said. Her voice carried in the room like a wave of authority and no one dared to question her.
Aria walked back into the room and tossed the keys to Niel, "Let's go."
