“Please, mother, please don’t do this!” you cried holding onto your mother’s skirts as she pushed you through the town square. Your mother possessed a look of infinite grief, but stone hard determination mixed in one, with her hand clenching around your shirt while she pulled you to the one place you didn’t want to go.

Every year, your town had to present the royal family an 18 year old girl, in hopes of finding a match for their prince. The catch was, the prince froze at the age of nineteen, so he has already had wife nominees that would today be as old as your great grandmother.

Yes, the prince was a vampire. Your town was ruled by the vampire family and this was the only price they requested for keeping the townsfolk safe from werewolves.

But, like in every fairytale, the price came in blood- if the bride didn’t interest the spoiled prince, she would be thrown into the dungeons, where she would slowly transform into a walker, a vampire gone insane by the lack of feeding.

This year was your year. And with your luck, you were chosen.

“Mother, let’s just run away. Let’s leave and-“ you weren’t able to finish the sentence because of your mother’s slap.

“Stop saying nonsense. You’re not only saving me- you’re saving the whole town. Be a good girl, and go.” You saw it in her eyes, that your mother was on the verge of a breakdown, so you tried to calm yourself- for her. She was the only one you had left and you couldn’t afford to lose her.

The great castle started appearing in front of you- the place of your eternal life or doom, depending on one choice of the prince.

“My baby girl…I’m so sorry.” Your mother only now seemed to realize what she did by bringing you here, when the guard seized you from her hold. You could faintly hear her screams and please for your forgiveness as you were pulled into the castle and the great gate closed behind you.

The countdown has started.

Thirty days. When they pass, your faith will be known.

-

The first ten days around the castle were torture. You now understood why most of the girls couldn’t last longer than a week of this cursed place. The halls and rooms were too big, which meant that even the smallest movement or sound created an eerie echo which stayed there for a while.

Another way unnerving thing was the royal guard. The servants of the castle were mere human, but the richly clad men standing at the doors to the bedrooms of the royal family were vampires. Vampires with blood red eyes, watching your every movement when you went past them. You could feel their eyes on your neck, eyeing you hungrily.

Having a pulse around here .

And if the days weren’t enough to scare you, the nights did their trick.

You have resided in a large bedroom with a queen-sized bed. Beautiful tapestries and rich bookshelves stood proudly by the walls and there was  a great window that always let the moonlight shine upon your bed.

The scenery itself was very beautiful. But once the night colored in multiple shadows and mixed in random furniture cracking into the ghostly sound of the wind, your bedroom turned from a beautiful haven into a nightmare storage room.

Yet, it still wasn’t finally over. One last thing you needed to add to finish the picture you saw and heard the tenth time now- you heard screams. And not some normal screams, the ones children emit while playing.

Oh no, you were talking about blood curdling, heart stopping shrieks coming from the dungeons below that stole your sleep. You knew that resided deep under the castle. You knew who walkers were- it wasn’t rare to hear about a case of a walker attack, and hearing them so close to you while you slept was too stressful for relaxing.

You rolled in your bed, unable to find a position comfortable enough to cover your ears with your hands and trying to mute out the random screams of pain. It has become harder and harder to bear, you thought while tears pushed into your eyes. You haven’t had a decent sleep in nearly two weeks and since nobody from the castle wanted to talk to the dead bride walking, you missed a normal talk sorely and if it kept going like this, you might fling yourself out of the window by your bed for eternal escape.

“Don’t worry.” A quiet voice in the mute bedroom sounded loud and clear, making you squeak and sit up quickly. You found the source of the encouragement sitting in one of the armchairs by the bookshelf, legs crossed and arms on his chest.

His face was shaded, but even through the darkness, you saw the red in the man’s eyes glimmer.

“They’re locked up tight. None of them will get to you.” He continued, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees and letting the moonlight illuminate his face. You gasped as you gazed at the stunning features- his perfectly sculpted jawline, almost shaped eyes, thin lips. There was something so royal about him, that when you nodded, you added a bow in greeting.

“That’s why you cannot sleep, am I right?” he asked another question, his eyes never leaving your face.

“Y-yes, that and…” you bowed your head, scratching the back of your neck and laughing quietly.

“I am a little homesick as well, my lord.” He nodded, not a single emotion on his face. He seemed as if he was calculating something.

“That is understandable. What’s your name?”

“_____, my lord.” You stuttered, your eyes cast on the luxurious covers.

“Call me Sehun, ___.” His statement made your gaze snap up and stare into his red eyes.

“S-Sehun?!” you asked, a bit bewildered.

“Sehun, a-as in…”

“Yes. As in, your groom.”

So this was him. This was the mysterious Oh Sehun everybody seemed to be talking about. Even though he had the title of the prince, he didn’t dress that way- he was garbed for comfort, noting too tight, but nothing too loose either.

“Y-you…m-me…” you expected your first meeting to happen at a different place and time, not in the middle of the night while you were in bed.

“You seem exhausted. You should go back to sleep.” Sehun interrupted your babbling, his eyes softening. Or was it just your imagination?

“B-but…the screams…” you looked down at your covers again, away from the vampire prince.

“I can’t do anything about them. I’m sorry.” You shook your head.

“No, it’s okay, I just…never mind…”

“If you would like, I could watch over you. I can guarantee, they won’t get past me.” A soft smile grazed his face and you couldn’t help but to hear your heart skip a beat at the sight. Even though he looked very attractive stone-faced, a smile suited him much more.

“Only if it won’t be a bother to you, my lord.”

“Sehun.”

“I’m sorry, Sehun.” Sleep was taking over you and your suppressed a yawn while straightening on the bed again. With the knowledge that you had your own personal bodyguard made it much easier for you to find rest. The last thing you remembered of that night were soft shuffles of pages being flipped and the soft murmur of your groom which sounded dangerously close to good night.

-

A few days flew by since your first meeting with the prince and since then, you have been seeing Sehun on a daily basis. The dining hall wasn’t empty anymore- he sat facing you, his plate empty and asking you many questions about your life. In the afternoon, you found a new companion to be with you on your regular walks through the gardens or your visits to the vast library of the caste. Through all this, you learned that the seemingly cold vampire prince was nothing like this expression made him to be. Sehun was a genuinely nice your man, who even after hundreds of years still didn’t lose his playfulness. He loved to make you smile, doing even many pranks on his servants and guards, just to see you lighten up. He felt so happy, so sage with you, it seemed unnatural. During his whole existence, he had never met someone like you.

And even through you were basically a prisoner at the castle, you couldn’t help but to enjoy the hospitality of the vampires. But for how long?

-

It all went down the twenty second day of your stay. After finally getting used to falling asleep in the horror environment, you were awoken by bells ringing. The eerie sound carried through the wind, making sleep escape you quite quickly. This never happened before.

What was going on?

You rubbed your eyes as you rolled out of bed and walked to the door, your feet creating a soft pitter-patter on the stone cold ground. The door creaked as you pushed it open and you stared down the candle-lit hallway. It was unnerving, really and when you heard a distant shriek echo down the halls, your heart started beating faster. Everything told you should slam the door shut and lock it, but you willed yourself not to move.

You then noticed one weird thing- the hall was deserted. Where were all the guards?

Your answer came in form a of a shrieking walker charging down the hall on his fours, saliva dripping from his mouth, over the long fangs and heaving grunts escaping this through as he trained his eyes on the only eatable thing- you.

The decades, maybe even centuries of not feeding made the walker look terrifying- the sickly green skin clung to the creature’s bones, but you were still pretty sure it could kill you with a single swipe of its claws. His eyes were charcoal black as they hungered for blood.

Another shriek resonated through the caste, and as you slammed the door shut and braced yourself against it, you realized it was your own. You shut the bold tight in its place and not a second later, the whole door shook under the heavy blows of the creature. Frustrated by the obstacle between it and you, it started snarling and growling, making your eyes tears up with fear.

This wasn’t the way it was supposed to end. Not at the hands of a renegade walker, murdered in your own bedroom, with your prince in your vicinity.

These kinds of thoughts floated in your mind as you eased yourself under your bed, your hand clasped tightly over your mouth to prevent the sobs from escaping your throat. The door started groaning under the blows of the creature and tears flowed freely down your cheeks. He was going to break through that door, and then he will find you under that bed and-the shrieks were suddenly dropped and the door stopped shaking. Fearing what may come next, you didn’t crawl out, instead, you curled into a small ball, hiding your face in your knees.

The door flew open and you bit into your lip to prevent yourself from screaming. Expecting to see sick, bare feet on the ground, you were surprised when a pair of expensive shoes came into your view. A voice called your name and you immediately recognized the bearer.

“___? Are you here?” Sehun’s voice called out, but you still didn’t dare to make yourself known to the vampire. Apparently, your erratic heartbeat gave you away, because he crouched down next to the bed and looked under it, his eyes meeting your tearful ones. He didn’t say a word as he extended his hand to you. You shakily accepted it and he swiftly pulled you out, setting you down on the edge of the bed.

“Are you okay?” your savior asked, visibly panting. You took in his appearance- the white shirt had been stained with blood, which smeared a little on his face as well. Although he was covered in the red liquid, he seemed to be unharmed and so you nodded, only a little squeak getting out of you. Sehun turned to face you, concern written all over his handsome features. You noticed that he hadn’t fed for a longer time now,  as his black eyes stared back at yours.

“He didn’t bite or scratch you, right?” he asked, still making no move to come closer. He stood in front of you, as if nervous to hear your answer. His question was useless, though- the walker hadn’t been able to get through your door, so other than mental scarring and upcoming long, sleepless nights, you were fine. Even so, you presented your arms to him, which were scratch less.

“You got here in time.” You finally found your voice and in that moment, two strong arms wrapped around you and brought you to a firm body. You returned Sehun’s embrace instinctively, burying your face in his chest.

“I’m so glad…” his breath ran down your back, making you shiver.

“For a moment there, I thought…that a walker was already inside. For a moment there, I thought I lost you.” He confessed, one of his hands holding the back of your head to him and the other one wrapped around your waist, gripping you tight.

“This wasn’t an accident, you know. Someone let out that walker on purpose.” His statement had your eyes popping.

“W-what? But why?”

“To get to you, of course.”

Me? Why me?” you didn’t understand, and Sehun looked like he didn’t want to explain it to you. But when you kept your stare at him a little longer, he sighed, running a hand through his hair.

“You’re the one, ___-ah.”

“The one?” your mouth was slightly ajar and Sehun’s lips pursed in annoyance.

“My queen. There’s something…I didn’t feel with the others, that I feel with you. And they’re trying to get you away from me.” As you processed the mind-blowing information you just received, Sehun wrapped his arms around you again.

“But don’t worry. I won’t let them. We’ll make it through. That is…” he paused, his grip slightly wavering.

“If you want me.”

You didn’t know what was it, that made you like the vampire prince- it was so simple, but so complicated at the same time. It took you less than a second to decide by wrapping your arms around his neck and shyly pressing your lips against his.

“I do.”
