Chapter 17
Delusions of Grandeur
Ricky was still rubbing his head, sending a glare L. Joe's way as they settled down at the table, apparently waiting for the food someone had begun cooking to get served. L. Joe only had to meet his gaze for a second to make the other boy avert his eyes to the table, readying himself for another blow that didn't come.
They kept that going back and forth a few times, before Niel and Changjo settled at the table too, nobody commenting or caring about the fact that neither Chunji or CAP had come to join them yet.
Forgetting all about his glaring contest, Ricky turned astounded eyes on the other boys, “You'll never guess what happened just before.” he began dramatically. “What?” Changjo asked, more to be polite than because he really cared, judging by the yawn that followed his question. L. Joe tried to send his darkest glare to the other boy, but now the others were around, it didn't seem to have the same impact.
Ricky barely even looked at him, except to grin mischievously as he sold him out. “I saw L. Joe and Chunji in bed together.” he declared proudly. “Duh, they were sharing Chunji's bed, remember? That's what you guys were fighting it out for last night.” Niel commented with a dismissive eye roll.
“Not what I meant.” Ricky stated, shaking his head at how stupid his friends were being. “I meant.... well think about it, what do you think I saw? It's Chunji I'm talking about here!” he exclaimed enunciating each word carefully, as though he hoped the other boys would catch onto what he meant if he spoke slow enough.
“Chunji got L. Joe in his death grip?” Changjo questioned, tossing out the first idea that popped into his head. “Uh huh. And then the most amazing thing ever happened.” Ricky continued, exuberantly. “L. Joe got out on his own. He didn't even wake Chunji up or anything.” he crowed, delighted. His words drawing dubious looks from both Changjo and Niel who then turned their gaze towards L. Joe, seated in between them.
“Damn. I was hoping you'd forgotten I was here.” he mumbled, his cheeks flushing at the attention. He didn't understand why they were looking at him like that: as though he were a magician or something. From what they were saying, it didn't seem all that unusual for Chunji to do that to people in his sleep.
“Did you really?” Changjo enquired, sounding like he didn't believe it a single bit. “Yeah, but I don't see what the big deal is.” he answered, hesitantly, worried that his truthful answer would somehow be wrong.
“No one has ever succeeded before. Normally Chunji won't let go until he wakes up and realises that he's holding onto you.” Changjo explained. “How did you manage to get out?” Niel asked, intrigued. L. Joe's cheeks flushed darkly at the thought of trying to put into words exactly what he'd done. He had a feeling that wasn't something a person normally did to wake up their friends: a lover maybe, but a friend? “I asked him to let me go.” he stated, figuring that a partial truth was probably the best and simplest answer to give them.
The other boys couldn't help but laugh at his answer. “You asked him?” Niel repeated, as though he couldn't believe that L. Joe had said that. He wasn't sure if it was because it seemed so unlikely to work, or because it was so simple. “But Chunji sleeps like a log. He doesn't understand anything when he's asleep. He can't even hear anything when he's asleep.” Ricky spluttered, amazed by L. Joe's answer.
“Well then how do you guys wake him up?” he demanded a little annoyed by the fuss they were making about the whole thing. He didn't want to be forced to dwell on the matter, lest it come out exactly what he'd done. He didn't really want to deal with the consequences of that, although the fact that one of the members at that table apparently engaged in a ual relationship with another man, should mean the consequences wouldn't be too bad.
But the teasing would be merciless, and somehow he doubted that they'd restrain themselves when Chunji did decide to join them. Now Chunji finding out about what he'd done to him in his sleep, did concern him.
Almost as though he'd sensed L. Joe's thoughts, Chunji padded into the room, rubbing his eyes, as he plopped onto the chair beside Ricky. “We were just talking about you.” Changjo commented, looking at the other boy pointedly. “Is that so?” Chunji asked, trying to cover a yawn.
“Why'd you do it?” Ricky demanded, fixing his pout on the older boy beside him, sliding his chair closer, to force Chunji to look at him as he spoke. “Do what?” he demanded, grumpily. L. Joe winced slightly at the tone, knowing that Chunji still hadn't been able to get enough sleep. “Why'd you let L. Joe get up? You never let me or Changjo or Niel or CAP get up.” he complained.
Chunji blinked, considering Ricky's words for a moment, a thoughtful look passing across his face. “I did what?” he enquired, trying to check that he was following what Ricky said correctly. “Got L. Joe in your death grip. But he says he spoke to you and you let him go.” Niel explained, helpfully. “And then he hit me!” Ricky shrieked, sticking his tongue out at him, across the table.
“Well if L. Joe did it, then you probably had it coming.” Chunji argued, making Ricky complain louder. “He did.” L. Joe agreed, Chunji leaning over the table to high-five the other boy, as Ricky complained about how unfairly he was treated by everyone else.
