Professional Opinion

Description

Most of my friends were still in school trying to figure out their lives in a classroom.  Some were married, some even had babies.  Me?  At 22, I became the Vice President of International Marketing and Design for one of the top design firms in the nation.  At 22, I thought I’d have my life in order.

I was completely wrong.

Traveling all over the world doesn’t help either.  There is no stability in my life.  There is no consistency; the only consistent thing is the monthly checks I receive from my jobs overseas and phone calls from my worried parents.

“You work too hard.  You’re so young but you’re acting like you're 40.  Stop and enjoy life for awhile before you miss it.”

That was exactly why I have been avoiding their calls lately.  The issue of me overworking myself was disturbing my parents.  I thought being successful meant having a stable job with a stable income, owning a home, and being happy?  The definition of success was something I’ve been questioning lately.  I had everything that determined success; I really did have everything.  But, I wasn’t happy.  I wasn’t fulfilled.  Something was just…missing.

Foreword

The president laughed and leaned forward on his desk, “______, we still can’t thank you enough for helping out with Psy’s album.  There have already been positive reviews in the States because of you.”

“Eh, don’t inflate ______’s already huge head!  She only helped with making the album look pretty, I did the rest!” Psy said as he gave a surprised look to the president, which received a giggle from me.

“I’m just glad I don’t have to work in a confined space with this guy anymore,” I said as I nudged Psy oppa with my elbow.  “Now we have to work on promotions though, so I guess I haven’t escaped you quite yet.”

Psy smiled down at me and wrapped his arm around my shoulder, “Ahhh don’t act like you don’t like hanging out with your favorite oppa.”  I nudged his arm off and gave him a disgusted look.  “Hyung, I heard Jiyong-ah finished his first song for the album, lets go see him practice.”

My eyes and mind were wandering all around the colorful room where all the president’s toys were lined up neatly.  I barely noticed them talking to me until the president leaned over towards me.  President Yang looked over at me and spoke in a hushed tone, “______, as a favor to me, can you look at one of my solo artists?  I just want your professional opinion on him."

All three of us stood up from our seats and started heading towards the entrance of the president’s office.  I raised my eyebrow and continued to follow the two men down a long corridor.  Soft hip-hop music was playing through one of the rooms and was getting louder as we headed further down.

The president noticed my confusion and spoke, “Just let me know if he’s ready.”  He opened the doors to a dance studio where a handful of people were dancing to a song.  Psy, the president, and I all took a seat in the very back part of the studio and watched in silence as everyone was getting into a new position for the choreography.  At the head of the studio stood a lean figure with a beanie pulled almost completely over his eyes.  He let out a frustrated groan and began pacing in front of the mirror.

“Again.”

The dancers obeyed his command and the song began to play.  The artist was fully engrossed in the choreography that he didn’t even realize three new people had joined him in the studio.  His face looked intense and his dance moves were so precise and sharp that even the professional dancers behind him looked like amateurs.  My foot began to tap with the song and my head automatically began bouncing.  The beat was catchy and the lyrics were simple yet garnered a much deeper meaning.

He was good.

“Ahh, sorry hyung, I forgot we changed our arms at that part,” a dancer spoke with his head facing the floor.

The artist let out another exhausted groan and threw his hands on his head.  It was obvious he was working towards perfection.

President Yang glanced towards me and waited for my answer.  Though, I already knew the minute I saw him what my answer would be.

I met his glance and shook my head no.

The president nodded his head and we all three stood up from our seats in unison.  Psy oppa let a small sigh and led the way out the studio.  Following behind the two men, I turned my attention towards the artist standing in front of the mirror.  He was staring at his reflection with his hands tight at his side.  He looked confused, irritated, and stressed.  Within the seconds I noticed this, I realized that he was going to have to figure himself out before he would ever be ready to debut in the States.
