Chapter 19: Roommate

Dare to Desire

Life is like a game of cards.  The hand you are dealt is determinism; the way you play it is free will.

Wooyoung’s POV

The three of us were squished into the stuffy backseat of a cab Suzy called to pick us up and drive us somewhere. It never occurred to me that even after being secluded in a taxi for over ten minutes I still had no idea where we were heading. It seemed like once we left the borders of Korea, I became the oblivious one rather than Taecyeon.

“So guys, where are we going?” I finally coughed out, pulling the window down for some fresh air. The air here seemed much more humid than Korea, but oddly pleasant at the same time. I fought the childish temptation to stick my entire head out the window and waited for a reply.

“Take us here please,” Suzy informed the taxi driver in English, handing him a pink sticky note with some words written in dark blue ink. She then turned to look outside her own window, completely ignoring my question. If we were in Korea I wouldn’t have to put up with this sort of attitude, but since Taecyeon and I would be lost sheep without her guidance, I fought my urges to break out fuming. Shooting a glance at Taecyeon, I understood why he never heard my question. His headphones were tight against his ears, blasting music so loud I could hear the melodies from one foot away. The sound radiating from his headphones were probably the most familiar noises to me since we arrived here—Korean pop music. To be more specific, he was listening to SNSD’s Gee, bobbing his head back and forth to the chorus like the inner fan-boy he was and making the letter ‘G’ with his fingers when the appropriate lyrics came. Sighing, I leaned my head back against the stiff headrest of this beat down cab and tried to close my eyes for a brief nap, but my mind wouldn’t allow for any rest. I couldn’t blame myself for not being able to sleep, because despite the foul scent of sweat from the old, ripping seats I felt completely lost. I began to second guess about whether I should’ve made such a rash decision to come to Canada, but now it was too late to turn back. No amount of doubt will ever steer me back towards my home country until my sole reason for leaving is satisfied.

Just when I pulled my messy notebook out of my backpack, the car scooted to an immediate stop in front of a large building.

“We’re here!” Taecyeon beamed with excitement, almost pushing Suzy out of the way to get out of the cab. I savoured my awestricken moment for a few seconds longer before jumping out. I was definitely not going to miss the hideous stench of whatever the taxi smelt like at all.

“Follow me,” Suzy ordered in a tone no louder than the usual indoor voice. She spared no glance at either of us and began on her way, not bothering to check whether we actually followed or not. I had a feeling that even if we were pushed back by crowds of people she wouldn’t slow her pace one bit for us.

“How do you like Canada?” Taecyeon walked steadily beside me, lugging his bags on his back as beads of sweat dripped down from his forehead.

“Other than the airport and the stuffy taxi, I really have no say on this country yet.” I responded, keeping my eyes on Suzy’s bright pink jacket that helped her to stand out among the rush of people that just passed by. Taecyeon chuckled and nodded, walking slightly faster than me now. Was he implying for a race? I sped up my pace to match his, waiting to see if he would speed up again. Just like I predicted, he began taking faster and longer strides to gain some lead. I did the same and then shifted right in front of him, accidently causing him to walk right into my back when he sped up again. I tumbled forward from the impact but managed to avoid an evident face-plant.

“Yah, we’re in a school stop fooling around.” Suzy’s cold voice scolded us from metres ahead, engraving her deathly glare in my mind within seconds before turning back and continuing her fast pace. I shot Taecyeon a confused stare and he only shrugged, placing a hand on my shoulder.

“She’s like that. You’ll learn to get used to it.” He smiled, removing his hand from my shoulder and began walking at a much faster pace to catch up to Suzy. Rolling my eyes, I followed. Never in my lifetime have I ever met anyone as heartless as Suzy, but then again, I’ve only known her for a total of no more than forty-five minutes. Maybe it was too soon to judge her.

“Wait here for a second.” Suzy ordered again, making sure the two of us stayed seated on the bench outside the office as she walked in alone. The two of us watched her speak to the secretary at the front desk through the transparent door. After stepping backwards, a chubby middle-aged looking man stepped past her and pushed through the glass door.

“Which one of you is Taecyeon?” He asked, fumbling his tongue to pronounce Taecyeon’s name. Even two syllables could show me that his accent was very bad, but I knew without a doubt that he had not even one drop of Korean blood in him. Taecyeomn raised his hand with a smug smile and dropped it once the chubby white man nodded towards him. He then pointed his magenta pen at my face and asked,

“So you must be Jason then?” Taecyeon was quick to react and interrupted,

“I think you have the wrong name. He’s—“

“Yes I am.” I confirmed, interceding Taecyeon’s sentence and receiving the same nod from the chubby man. Without a word, he stepped back into the office, leaving the two of use clueless and dumbfounded outside. Through the door we watched as he handed Suzy an envelope, and then grabbed two packages off the front desk and passed through the door again. He gave us each a box and smiled,

“Welcome to our art school I’m the principal here. You may refer to me as Dr. Williams.” I repeated his last name in my mind several times, trying to get the pronunciation dead on.

“Doctor?” Taecyeon mindlessly questioned, receiving a quick glare from Dr. Williams.

“Yes, doctor. I have my PhD.” He snarled at us and stomped back into the office just as Suzy was exiting. There was probably something wrong with that man, considering he’s a principal at a school and yet he insists on being called a doctor. I shrugged off the odd thought and wondered if all teachers in Canada were this strange. Then again, it was still too early to judge.

“I’ll show you to your dorms.” Suzy offered, and began walking again. Even though this was a generous action on her part, her attitude made me feel no gratitude towards her. As we passed down the zigzag of hallways and stairs, my brain began pounding at all the unfamiliar and signs with words foreign to me engraved. Every sign had at least two words, and I had no idea what the second word meant. I had to admit I was pretty horrible at English, but I had some sense of what was a word and what wasn’t.

“Yo Hyung,” I called out and Taecyeon turned to look at me, “What does ‘toilettes’ mean?” I stood still in front of a sign outside a door and pointed directly at it. Taecyeon took a few steps back and stared at the sign for less than a second before bursting into laughter.

“It means washroom in French.” I blinked three times and glanced back at the sign. I thought we were in Canada, not France. Why the heck was there French written everywhere?

“Hurry up!” Suzy demanded from down the hallway. Her feet were planted outside of a room with a card key in her hand. When we finally reached her, she threw the card key carelessly at Taecyeon and motioned with her chin towards the door. Was it seriously too hard to just tell us that this was our dorm? I sighed again, trying to release the annoyance I felt towards her and watched Taecyeon slide the card key down the card reader on the door and pulled it open. Many hotels had this sort of lock system so I wasn’t fascinated at all.

“Get comfortable, explore a bit; school is going to start in one week so you better become familiar with this place. By the way, Dr. Walliams told me to tell you guys that you have another roommate. Good bye,” Suzy stormed through her sentences and then ended her departure in English, closing the door behind us.

“We have another roommate?” I muttered, staring around the room. There was one bunk bed and one single bed adjacently placed against the walls.

“I guess so.” Taecyeon shrugged uncaringly, flopping onto the bottom bunk of the bed and began speaking to himself in English. I assumed that he was reading graffiti on the bottom of the top bunk. Even in Korea kids loved to vandalize furniture.

“Music for the soul, get out of my room, can you handle the heat…” Taecyeon continued to read, and I took this time to open up the box that Dr. Williams gave us. I tore the tape off with my bare hands and folded the cardboard flaps down, pulling out a black t-shirt with the school’s logo printed on the front and an ID card slipped under. I stared at the picture of my face on the card. When did they get this picture? Staring at the blurred background, I recognized the glass doors at the front of the school and remembered hearing an odd click sound upon entering the building. It was pretty shady of them to take a photo so secretively like that.

“Bill is cool… Justin Bieber was here… Wait!” Taecyeon continued reading them suddenly stopped and shot up from his laid back position.

“Justin Bieber was in this room!” Taecyeon gasped, receiving a yawn on my part.

“Beaver what?” I asked, patting my mouth after my yawn and blinked a few times.

“He’s really popular in North America right now! Here, let me show you!” Taecyeon insisted, pulling a laptop out of his backpack and opening his music player. Slightly uninterested in Western pop music, I hesitantly looked onto the screen just as he double clicked on a song titled ‘Baby’ by Justin Bieber. Immediately, the room was filled with the music and just as the voice began singing the first verse I couldn’t help but ask,

“I thought Justin was a boy name. Why is there a girl voice singing?” Taecyeon stared at me wide eyed for a second and gasped,

“A boy is singing this…” I couldn’t help but laugh at how high pitched the vocals were, considering it was a boy’s voice but the chorus was quite catchy.

“Yo guys, turn that trash off!” An unfamiliar voice ordered jokingly as our third roommate entered the dorm. His hair was dyed dark brown, slightly waved and the bottom tips of his jeans were torn. Immediately, Taecyeon closed the music player on his laptop and smiled,

“Hey, I’m Taecyeon!” Throwing his heavy backpack onto the floor, he eyed the both of us with a content smile and introduced,

“Call me Ayden. You’re Jason right?” We made eye contact and I nodded, unwilling to boast of my ‘Engrish’ at this moment and continued pulling stuff out of the box.

“So you’re both Korean?” He asked with a happy voice, his presence was bringing in a more energetic atmosphere.

“Yeah, we just arrived from Korea today.” Taecyeon answered, knowing I wouldn’t be able to hold off a lengthy conversation in English for very long.

“I’m Korean too,” Ayden added, pulling a wheeled chair in front of the two of us and sat down casually on the chair backwards so that his chin could rest on the top of the chair’s back.

“What’s your Korean name?” Taecyeon asked, ten times more interested in the conversation now than before.

“Lee Donghae,” Donghae smiled, taking my ID card from the floor and scrutinizing it as he spoke. His friendly personality made it feel like the three of us were childhood friends. He was definitely a social person, which reminded me of how I was back in high school in Korea. It felt odd to be the quiet one now, but with this language barrier I didn’t have much of a choice. Suddenly, Donghae’s cell phone rang, causing the room to fill with the chorus of SNSD’s Tell Me Your Wish. I groaned at the thought of living with two obsessive sones.

“Sorry I have to take this call,” Ayden excused himself from us and stood near the door, talking in a hushed whisper. Even then, we could hear his conversation fairly clearly.

Donghae’s POV

I grabbed my phone from my backpack and headed towards the door, trying my best to keep my voice down.

“Ne, Gomo?” I answered politely. My auntie’s relieved voice greeted me and I could sense her overexcited smiles even over the phone.

“Your mom told me to call you to make sure you got to the dorm safely.” She explained her reason for calling. I lived in Canada for about five years with my uncle—my mom’s younger brother—but my mom in Korea was still so overprotective.

“I’m fine, Gomo. Both my roommates are Korean.” I informed her, continuing the conversation. It had been a long time since I ever spoke to this auntie, but I was more interested in how my favourite cousin was doing.

“That’s wonderful! Now you can eat kimchi without people complaining about the smell!” She laughed jokingly and I laughed with her. Taecyeon and Jason began their own conversations so I didn’t feel self conscious about my phone call. It was just weird for people I barely knew to listen to my calls with family; nothing personal.

“Gomo, how has Jieun been?” I finally asked, anticipating a boatload of praise from my auntie. Since birth there was never anything bad to say about Jieun, and when we were much younger in Korea I would treat her like a little sister. I learned about Jieun’s growing love for music and entertainment a few years ago and bought her a pink guitar since she was already having guitar lessons. The praises never came like I expected, instead, I heard a soft sigh from the other line.

“Jieun is living in the dorms,” My auntie began, her usual joyful voice was now saddened at the mention of her daughter, “But missing my baby isn’t what’s bothering me. Before she left for the dorms there was something weird about her ever since she met a boy.” My mind jolted. Did Jieun get her heart broken by some jerk in Korea? I felt my palms roll into a fist and clenched the phone tightly against my ear. This was the only conclusion my irrational mind could think up.

“Please tell me the story, Gomo.” I slightly pleaded, knowing my auntie wouldn’t hide a thing from me. She always treated me like a son of her own.

“Near the end of the school year she began seeing this boy named Jang Wooyoung…”

Wooyoung’s POV

“So why the hell does everyone think your name is Jason?” Teacyeon questioned me with a hushed whisper. I was certain Donghae couldn’t hear our conversation clearly from where he stood.

“We’re in Canada, so I decided to go with the name Jason because it’s more Western. I’m already enough of a fob as it is.” I explained, unhappy that I had to bluntly admit my linguistic disability out loud.

“That name kind of suits you.” Taecyeon nodded, eyeing every structure of my face. I rolled my eyes and stood up to grab my backpack near the door.

“Gomo, how has Jieun been?” Donghae asked on the phone, leaning comfortably against the wall in a kickstand pose. My heart began to race at the sound of that name—the name my mind suppressed from my thoughts all this while. There was no way it could be the same Jieun! Then again, both their family names were Lee.

“Near the end of the school year, she began seeing a boy named Jang Wooyoung…” The faint voice from the phone began. My ears immediately locked on the name the voice breathed—Jang Wooyoung. My hypothesis had been correct. My new roommate was Jieun’s cousin!

A/N: I decided to introduce a new character! Ayden AKA Lee Donghae from Super Junior (Except in this fanfic he isn't in suju xD!) Ayden is supposedly Donghae's English name given to him by his mom if I'm not mistaken and I really love that name ^^! Sorry for not updating in so long! School is crazy. absolutely crazy. Actually right now i'm slacking which is a good thing because slacking = I get to write DTD = my readers are happy = i'm happy = everyone's happy = a good world :D! Yesyes? haha. I have so many ideas for this fanfic I can't wait to write them out but i have a feeling this fanfic will take a long time to write. About the Justin bieber humor, I am NOT a hater, I'm actually more close to a JB fan (not quite) than a hater actually ^^! I respect the kid, so I don't mean to offend any JB lovers who may be reading this (:! Sorry this chapter is all Wooyoung! I promise next chapter will have Jieun ^^ Please leave a comment?

Chapter 46: This was a good read. I actually initially read it to see what it takes to be a published writer and now I realise that no matter what your taste in content or preference in writing style, all you really need is a love for what you are doing and the passion to see it to greater hights.
I enjoyed your storyline and the admire moral behind your story.

"Daring to desire doesn't mean taking a plunge into the abyss of the unknown darkness. If you truly believe in your ability to attain your dreams and fulfil your desires, daring to desire can only mean a lifetime of soaring towards the light that leads you; and in the proccess, attaining far greater things than what you were initially hoping to find...a reason to live as well as a shot at true happiness. Because without a dream those two things are irrelevent."

I hope you have success in your desired career;whether it be writing or whatever you may desire.
Thank you for this fic author Esther Lac :)
