Countdown to Sunset

Description

We can forget words, reasons, and even events, but one thing the human mind can never erase is how something once made us feel. When the sun sets each evening, I’m reminded of that very instant when not another care in our innocent world existed. It was just you and me, and a countdown to sunset.

Foreword

Some people say that a photograph can speak a thousand words. I believe it’s a powerful memento that allows each person to relive cherished moments, never to be willingly forgotten. But what if there existed no photograph to document one particular point in time, a memory that in turn becomes more of a speculation than a reality? Forgetting is a natural occurrence as the clock continues to tick, but some memories—no matter how faded—can never truly disappear.

We were once considered practically inseparable, but as life took its natural toll, did our growing up really force us to drift apart? Not much has changed since the beginning. Neither of us moved houses, and as always, we never attended the same schools. The only explanation I could incur was that as our lives got busier, there was no longer any time left for us. What bothers me more than the fact that we’d grown so apart, was the truth that we were never actually together.

I was taking a casual walk along a road near the outskirts of my neighborhood, just to be alone with my thoughts as cars racing past droned out all other sounds. I’d even left my iPod at home so that my music wouldn’t distract me. It wasn’t long since school ended for the summer, and though I didn’t miss high school for even a second, I found myself pacing in its direction. This familiar roadside led to many places, far beyond my school. Sometimes I’d walk endlessly until the sun begins to set before realizing I should head back.

Being cramped in school really helped keep my mind off most other things, but now that there was no more homework stress or people to avoid in busy hallways, I found myself easily submitting to the nostalgia of my short adventure. The sun had already begun setting as I reached the intersection that separated my neighborhood from His. There never was any other reason for me to cross over other than for my family to join with Tao’s during our weekly get-togethers, but that was all behind us now. It had already been 5 years since we last met, and even though I could understand how our lives diverged onto two different paths, I couldn’t help but hope that these paths would someday intertwine again. Every now and then, when I watch the sun inch closer to the horizon line in the gradient sky, I’d make a silent wish to see him again. Even if it was just once more until fate drove us apart forever.

I guess what I really wanted with Tao was proper closure.

A/N: Okay I have to admit I have a problem with comitting to just one story at a time. I just had to start this one. I don't think this will be a super lengthy story, but it's definitely one that deserves to be written.

This is my first time actually making  legitimate poster for my own fanfic so I hope I didn't fail too badly ^^

Special thanks to a close friend, Haine, who chose the title "Countdown to Sunset" for me ~3 years before I decided to write this.
