The End and not the end

Heaven's Boys

Jongin, Kyungsoo, Baekhyun and Sehun were in a flower store.

“Since we’re visiting Joon-myun hyung along the way while visiting Chanyeol hyung, shouldn’t we bring Joon-myun hyung some flowers too?” Sehun piped up.

Meanwhile, Baekhyun who was busy selecting flowers for Chanyeol chimed in, “We shouldn’t visit Joon-myun without any flowers.”

Kyungsoo sniffed as teardrops formed in his eyes. Jongin noticed the sadness in Kyungsoo and squeezed Kyungsoo’s hands to reassure him.

“This is all...” Kyungsoo said but he was interrupted when Jongin placed his fingers on Kyungsoo’s lips to shush him.

“Kyungsoo hyung, haven’t we gone through this so many times before,” Jongin chided gently. “This isn’t your fault.”

“It’s not your fault Kyungsoo,” Baekhyun added sympathetically as be patted Kyungsoo on his back. “But it’s sad that this had to happen to Joon-myun hyung.”

Sehun sighed. “Maybe this is for the best for Joon-myun hyung. It’s sad, but perhaps this is a much better ending for him.”

“Come on, let’s get the flowers. He’ll stop by to visit Joon-myun before we visit Channie,” Baekhyun nagged.

And so the boys bought two bouquets of flowers. Baekhyun held one while Kyungsoo held the other. And when they left the columbaria later that afternoon under the glaring rays, they no longer had the flowers with them.

Jongin’s/Kai’s POV

“Kai, would you come over?” a voice called out for me.

It was Woohyun hyung.

“Aish,” I grumbled. I had barely sunk my into the comforts of the inviting sofa and I wanted so much to take a sip of my cocktail.

Why was I given the duty of photographer for the day when I was not much a competent camera expert and lens man?

“Kai!”

It was Woohyun hyung again.

Kyungsoo who sat next to me on the sofa nudged me on my side and eyed me to get going.

I quickly took a sip of my drink before I stood up, turned to Kyungsoo and frowned at him.

“It’s not fair,” I complained. “I’ve been running around the entire day…”

With his owl-like eyes that seemed to be judging me, Kyungsoo wagged his finger at me while he ordered, “Just go.”

“Why don’t you come along with me,” I replied as I grabbed his hand to yank him up from the sofa only to have him grab me in return instead. I lost my balance and fell forwards only to crash land on his body. Our faces and lips met with one another and I felt a hot flush run through my body when I realised my lips were on his pouty lips.

Kyungsoo grabbed me and pushed me back into the sofa as I brushed my hair awkwardly.

“Kai!”

“I better go,” I said as I quickly rose.

……

It was a multitude celebration of sorts today which explained the flowing alcohol in the late afternoon. Firstly, it was in celebration of Heaven’s reopening. Some of our regular patrons were present as were some of those who lived here or worked here at some point of time.

There were some faces I saw for the first time such as Junsu and Yoochun who were in their sixties. They had flown in from the US just to be present at the reopening.

And there were the others who stayed at Heaven at some point of time – Kikwang, Hyunseung, Junhyung, Woohyun, Sunggyu, Myungsoo, and Himchan. Some were attached to one another while some of them brought their dates or boyfriends along.

Ryeowook and Yesung were present of course.

Anyway, the damage the club had sustained during the fire had been repaired, and everything looked as good as new. Sungmin umma found the confidence to restart the business again after deciding not to let the arson demoralise us or derail the service and good we’re providing for the gay community. However, we did lose some business during the period when Heaven had to close. Our patrons were so upset that Heaven to close and they were looking forward to the day that Heaven would reopen again. They rallied behind us and pledged their support for Heaven by committing to patronising the club when it was found out that the incident was a hate crime directed at gays. The arsonists were caught and it turned out that one of them was related to Chanyeol’s killers. It looks like that bad blood sometimes runs within the family.

During the renovation, we had to move. Kyuhyun, Sungmin and Baekhyun moved in with Woohyun and Sunggyu. Actually Kyuhyun and Sungmin have their own apartment but it was being rented out. Kyungsoo and I went to stay with Yesung and Ryeowook. Sehun moved in with Lu Han.

Everyone associated with Heaven chipped into its renovation – whether it’s by monetary means, designing the new look, shopping for the interior, or helping to paint, clean or decorate the place.

Anyway it was a great time to update the club since its last renovation more than seven years ago. Sungmin-umma also had a nice deserved break from worrying about business matters though there were times he would always be onsite to supervise the renovation despite Kyuhyun appa’s nagging to just stay away and enjoy his break.

As a result of everyone’s collective effort, Heaven was reborn with a new modern swanky look and updated with powerful sound systems. New lights including a laser light show was installed. The layout and space usage remained mostly the same.

When I said it was a multitude celebration of sorts, it is true. Kyuhyun appa and Sungmin umma have just gotten a baby. Well, actually it is Kyuhyun’s baby which he had it conceived through surrogacy. They named him Cho Kyumin.

What about the rest of us? How are we doing?

As I went around the club taking photos, I spotted Kris enjoying his cocktail as he engaged in a conversation with another tall-looking teenager. I later found out that the teenager’s name is Tao. He is Lay’s friend and housemate, as well as Lu Han’s friend.

Speaking of Lu Han, he was sitting on one of the sofas in the lounge area on the second floor. He was busy kissing Sehun when I snapped a photo of them.

Anyway, Sehun had already moved back to Heaven to live. We all have. It’s not that Lu Han didn’t want Sehun around, but he felt it would be better for Sehun to live around with the adults and the rest of us. Sehun also agreed. He was really attached to Lu Han, but he wanted to be with around with his ‘brothers’ and ‘family’ more.

And we couldn’t help but notice that Sehun had changed. He was more cheerful nowadays. He smiled more. There was a glow radiating from him. Finally, Sehun found love, the true meaning of love. He no longer picked up guys at work; instead he would politely decline their invitations to get to know him better, though at times I know that he would be struggling to say no.

“Ya! Kai!” Sehun shouted as he broke away from Lu Han and jumped up from his seat. “What do you think you’re doing? Who said you could take our photo?”

Sehun attempted to grab the camera but I dodged quickly, made a monkey face at him and scooted off.

On the first floor, I spotted Eunhyuk and Baekhyun chatting as I snapped a photo of them. Don’t misunderstand. There is nothing romantic going on between them. It’s just that the living need to send away the departed for good, to forget the pain of losing someone, and carry on with their lonely existence without the person they love. It does help that Eunhyuk had been through the grief process himself before and is able to empathise with Baekhyun. So Eunhyuk took it upon himself to help Baekhyun, to give him a listening ear, to help him heal and move on.

But somehow I feel that Eunhyuk had not really moved on from Donghae. As for Baekhyun, he has become more subdued nowadays. Gone are the days when his lively chatter and laughter along with Chanyeol’s would enliven the room. His gaze is rather dull and hollow. He rarely smiles. But at least it was better than his initial days of grieving when he would lock himself in the share bedroom to cry. From what I heard, the things in what used to be his shared bedroom with Chanyeol have remained relatively untouched. Chanyeol’s clothes and possessions are mostly still in their original places. Sungmin umma had tried to pack and store Chanyeol’s stuff away when Baekhyun was away in school only to have him fly into a rage when he realised what had been done. This was the first time I had ever seen him flare up at Sungmin umma. He merely grabbed the boxes and took those back to the room. He unpacked all the clothes and put them in their original places.

I guess it would take time to heal his wounds, but I just hope he wouldn’t end up like Eunhyuk.

I walked to the bar counter to take a photo of Joon-myun hyung. Thankfully, he didn’t die. He awoke from his coma about one month after the fire.

I took a photograph of him fixing a cocktail. He looks the most attractive when he is always hard at work. His beaming smile doesn’t seem to wane, and it becomes a source of warmth and light in our darkened world and to us ‘brothers’. It makes us feel safe and secure to know that our guardian is always around.

Yixing took the drink from Joon-myun, sipped it and gave his thumbs up. I heard that when Yixing first got wind of the fire, he immediately rushed over to the hospital. He was devastated and cried buckets. Yixing would always find time daily to accompany Joon-myun at his bedside even if it just was for a few minutes despite being all tired from his busy training schedule.

Yixing cried when Joon-myun finally came round only to have his and everyone’s spirits crushed when it was discovered that Joon-myun is suffering from amnesia.

He could not remember the past or who we are. It was really heartbreaking for every one of us, but as Kyuhyun appa put it in retrospective, this might not be a bad thing for Joon-myun hyung after all. Given his abused childhood and teenage life, some things might be best forgotten.

At least, he has forgotten about his feelings he once had for Kyungsoo. He is able to forget the pain of not getting Kyungsoo’s love. At least Joon-myun seems happy now. At least he is able to start anew and build a new connection with Yixing. And it seems like he’s comfortable with Yixing so far.

......

A few days ago, Kyungsoo and I had approached Joon-myun. As usual, he was at the bar counter arranging the glasses and bottles as Heaven prepared for its reopening.

He beamed at us, “What’s up with the boy of you? Do you want to speak to me about something?”

Kyungsoo’s gaze shifted uneasily. I reached for Kyungsoo’s hand, held it and then mustered all my courage to speak, “Joon-myun hyung, Kyungsoo and I would like to tell you that both of us are an official couple.”

With an unwavering smile, he nodded, “That’s great. I’m happy for you. So both of you have become the next couple that Heaven has produced after WooGyu, BaekYeol...”

“Hyung,” Kyungsoo stammered. “Are you fine with it?”

“Why wouldn’t I be? I’m happy for the both of you.” Joon-myun looked at the both of us with a puzzled look.

“Hyung,” I asked, “can I ask you a question?”

“Sure.”

“Do you want your memories back?” I continued.

There was an uncomfortable silence for a moment as our breathing hitched. It was Joon-myun who broke the silence with his radiant smile and a laugh.

“The memories of Kim Joon-myun?” he asked.

It was now our turn to be puzzled. Why was Joon-myun hyung speaking like this?

“Well,” he drew a long breath, “I did try to find my memory back. But no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t remember. And then I thought maybe they were taken away from me for a reason. Maybe certain things were meant to be forgotten. However it is a pity I can’t remember the good memories I had with you and Kyungsoo or the rest of the guys. But I’m not going to let this bother me. I’m going to create new memories as Suho. Anyway, I don’t want to think about or live in the past. I’m just grateful to be alive. I’m thankful for the present. I want to look towards the future. And I’m really happy right now, so this is all that matters. I just want to be a good brother to you guys. So no, I’m not going to actively try to get my memories back.”

Joon-myun would always be Suho; Suho would always be Joon-myun – the smiling guardian angel.

Those words were reassuring to both Kyungsoo and me. But somehow we couldn’t help worry what would happen if he ever regains his memory and remembers his love for Kyungsoo. What would happen then? I guess we could only take it one step at a time.

Anyway, I could have sworn that I saw a teardrop in his eyes when he said those words.

......

I returned to where Kyungsoo is. “Hey, let’s take a selca?”

“With this camera?” he asked. “Isn’t it a bit too cumbersome and difficult?”

“We can always try.”

I hugged Kyungsoo from behind. And raising the camera over our heads, I took a photo of us.

“I want to take a look,” he said.

Kyungsoo and I have become an official couple just a few days ago. Both of us felt that it was a suitable time to do so. We are both relieved that Joon-myun has finally found his happiness – hopefully in the form of the Chinese boy named Yixing.

And further reassured by Joon-myun hyung’s response, Kyungsoo eventually found the courage to accept me.

“Let’s gather together!” Kyuhyun announced. “Group photo time!”

I sighed and rose from my seat again. When would I be able to get some damn rest? It is so tiring to be the official photographer.

I trudged forward with Kyungsoo as he helped me take the tripod stand. Everyone was getting ready excitedly and chatting away as they got in position for the photo. I adjusted the camera’s setting before I ran into the middle to join in for the group photo.

And snap!

And followed by a second one and third one.

Just then Sungmin umma noticed someone unfamiliar wandering into the club.

It was a fair fresh-face cute boyish teenage boy with a sharp face, rather thin with soft features like a girl.

He approached the party cautiously with his head bowed.

“I…am…looking…for…a…job,” he stammered. “I…have…no…place…to stay. I need money. I can work hard.”

“What’s your name?”

“Minwoo, No Minwoo-imnida.”

I smiled to myself knowingly. I remembered the day when I first embarked on my journey to Seoul after running away from home.

I remember that I was excited yet fearful. I remember the sadness of a breakup, of leaving a family who couldn’t accept me for who I am.

And like the many others before me, I stumbled upon Heaven.

The journey since has been a mix of joy, sadness and angst, of highs and lows, of love and loss.

I turned to welcome Minwoo with a smile and nod.

My story, no, our journeys and stories don’t and won’t end here. They will continue into the unknown future. We would be creating new stories every day.

This isn’t the end; it’s a new chapter of what is to come.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sorry for trolling you guys at the beginning? How many of you guys thought that Joon-myun died?

Anyway, do leave me your comments about the ending. Did you like it/hate it?

I guess one complaint would be Baekhyun doesn’t have a happy ending. But happy endings don’t always come to all people, or perhaps not with the snap of a finger. Baekhyun needs time to get over his grief. He might get his in the future. No one knows.

And yes, I did bring Kris and Tao together, whatever will happen in the future, no one knows.

I hope you guys are happy with Joon-myun’s ending. But I’m just curious, how many of you guys are not happy that I made Joon-myun suffer from amnesia? I know amnesia is cliché but I thought this would be the best outcome for JM. He could forget all the hurtful past and move on with life. Isn’t that a blessing for him?

But then again, how many of you think that JM has really forgotten about his past, or perhaps he is just faking his amnesia? You could interpret it as both ways.

And so after 62 chapters and more than 60 weeks, this story has finally come to the end. It’s really been a long journey. I hope you have enjoyed your journey with the boys. I did enjoy my journey with the boys, writing about them, the joy, the sadness, the pain and I hope you did enjoy the happy bits as well as the sad bits.

Heaven’s Boys existed because I wanted to highlight the situation of discrimination that gay people can face and the troubles they have.

So now, I shall retire this story with tears. There are no plans for a sequel at the moment. But who knows what the future would hold? But how many of you would like a sequel?

Once again, thank you to all my readers and subscribers who have stuck to be throughout the story even at the story’s lowest point. Thank you so much.

Chapter 62: It was soo good. At first I was a little hesitant to finish reading since I knew I would break down and cry. Honestly, it was all so good and so much was going on. I personally liked that Suho got amnesia because his attitude was kind of getting on my nerves but also because I wanted Kaisoo to be happy. I was shocked when I read that the guy Kai talked to in heaven was Jino; I could've died. When I read that Suho got hit in the head I thought he was going to die instantly but he didn't. The stories were so ed up which made it interesting. I would totally read a sequel. Keep up the good work :)
