By the time Seulgi and Irene made it to school the next morning, Wendy seemed to be bouncing off the walls. Irene couldn’t help the bit of hope that seeped into her, she knew it could be a number of things that were making the adorable ray of sunshine happy… but she hoped that their impending date later that day was the primary reason. Irene had upped her usual stylish clothes for a cuter coat jean combo, so she was even more elated when Wendy Son twirled around in a cute dress and cardigan. It seemed that she had taken some of Joy’s fashion advice to heart. Gone were the fluffy sweaters and bright pants, now replaced with a more sensible and fitted look. 

“Don’t you look, adorable Son.” Joy said sitting beside Wendy in the library. She looked to Irene with a smile, “She’s a cutie when she can’t destroy her own fashion with the clothes of a middle schooler. We are lucky goodwill even took them.” Wendy gave her a glare before huffing. 

“We get it, Wendy dresses like she’s twelve.” Irene patted Wendy’s back as she sat beside her in comfort. 

“Well not when I’m through with you,” Joy said with a smirk. “You got time today?” 

Irene looked carefully at the two girls wondering just what Wendy would say. “Fortunately I have a standing appointment on Fridays.” Irene’s eyes flickered to Wendy who had a shy smile and blush adorning her face. Irene could feel her heart do a somersault in response. 

“A shame,” Joy said, clicking her tongue. “The dance is a week away so Monday we go shopping.” Wendy rolled her eyes and nodded. “Excellent.” Irene felt Joy’s eyes land on her. She looked up meeting Joy’s gaze with an icy glare. “Wow, and here I thought the Ice Queen was melting. Any plans today?” 

Irene scoffed at the obvious attempt to dig up more information. “And since when have you concerned yourself with my Friday plans?” 

“Ouch,” Joy said with a light-hearted smile, “I just wanted to see if you’d fill in the time I have open since my adorable date decided to stand me up.” Joy squished Wendy’s cheek prompting a squeal from Wendy. Irene’s gaze intensified at Joy’s antics. “Brr,” Joy said while fake shivering, “You’re going to freeze me if you keep glaring like that Irene. I will take that as my invitation to leave though.” Irene rolled her eyes before she saw Joy lean in on Wendy and winking, “Monday, no exceptions you adorable fluff ball. I am going to set everything up. See you.” Joy blew them a kiss goodbye as she sauntered out. 

“I am going to say that Joy is officially YOUR friend,” Wendy said with an annoyed expression. It seemed that Wendy caught Irene’s shocked expression at her conclusion because Wendy let out a laugh prompting Irene to smile. “I was hoping I was able to contribute to your plans for today?” 

Irene’s heart was stilled for a second at the acknowledgement of their date. “You have something you want us to do?” 

“Yeah,” Wendy nodded, “I think you’ll enjoy it. It would be fun to do somewhere in between.”

“Well, I am intrigued...” Irene trailed off before giving a sly smirk, “Any spoilers?” 

“No way! You have your surprises and I have mine,” Wendy teased.  

Irene stared at Wendy with a warm smile. “May I just say that you are really pretty today.”

“Likewise,” Wendy replied. Her eyes scanned Irene before landing back on her eyes with a slight blush. “I really love your dark hair.” Irene blushed and looked away with a shy smile. Suddenly Wendy clutched her chest and took a giant breath in, startling Irene in the process. “Oh my gosh, you’re going to give me a heart attack!” 

“Oh stop!” Irene whispered to Wendy with a low laugh, she stood up and leaned into Wendy before smacking her shoulder. “You are too cheesy.”

“No, I am smooth,” Wendy stated. Irene looked at her with an amused glint in her eye, “Maybe not smooth but definitely have enough charm to somehow get you to like me.”

“We could always chalk it up to insanity,” Irene quipped back. She could see the smile in Wendy’s eyes. “What?”

“Nothing,” Wendy said, zipping . “I will tell you one day though.”Irene looked at the girl with narrowed playful eyes before giving her a full smile. “You know those big old smiles of yours are something new.”

“I guess I just didn’t really have a reason to smile before,” Irene winked. Wendy looked over the moon at her reply, for whatever reason, Irene knew she didn’t have to clarify that Wendy was the reason for her widest smiles these days.

“Hey,” called out a voice in Math class. Irene looked behind her to see Solar. 

“Hey,” Irene replied. “How was the meeting with the headmaster?”

“Good, the old man said to stop hacking into the junior’s roll.” It seemed that Solary, Moonbyul, Wheein, and Hwasa's small adventure had finally gotten back to the front office. The headmaster made a big show of mentioning how wrong it was for underclassmen to try and sneak into upper grades trips before calling the four girls into his office last period. 

Irene rolled her eyes as Solar laughed. “Frankly, I am surprised that they didn’t realize you were a bunch of Sophomores on a Junior/Senior trip.”

“You’ve seen Hwasa,” Solar said with a laugh. “She slips in and we all slide with her.” Irene gave her a half-smile of agreement. No one could deny the power that Hwasa exuded when she strutted around, catching the attention of anyone and everyone. She was easily confused for a senior half the time, even by the teachers. 

“I can’t imagine her not walking right by the attendance marker and flipping her hair about some excuse as to why your names weren’t on there.” 

“Actually Wheein did it,” Solar replied. Irene looked at her with shock before she continued. “Oh yeah, Amy from the eco club was taking the role and they had this flirting thing going on so she batted her eyes, spun a story, and suddenly we were ushered through.” Solar suddenly noticed Irene’s get up and raised her eyebrows, “You look nice today.” 

Irene looked down at her outfit and let out a soft shrug. “I didn’t wear my cheer jacket. No need to ring the press Solar.” 

“But a nice coat?” Irene could see Solar taking in every detail of her outfit and shifted a tad to distract the other girl. “And I can tell you have a new shade of lipstick. Even your hair is in waves!” 

“Your point?” Irene questioned with a raised brow and rigid pose.

Solar suddenly looked up, seemingly deep in thought before she looked back to Irene with a wide mischievous smile. “Someone else looks really cute today too…”

Irene twisted around to look at Solar who was leaning onto her desk. “And what does that have to do with me?”

“You might be able to trick everyone, but you know you can’t fool me, Irene.” Irene raised an eyebrow in response. “Just how much did we miss with our adventure? I come back and you’ve joined our club and are being nice to Wendy Son? I mean everyone knew you had the hots for her so-” 

“What do you mean?!” Irene whispered screamed. “I was beyond subtle!”

“Subtly is not what we would call it,” Solar replied with an eye roll. “Did you forget that I have a similar situation with one Byulyi? So did you decide to go our route and be friends with-”

“No!” Irene cut her off harshly. “I could never, frankly I don’t know how you can keep Byul so far away.” 

“It is the name of the game,” Solar replied with a locked jaw. Irene knew how much the push and pull bothered Solar, she also knew how much the distance hurt Byul. She had walked in on their fair share of heated discussions… amongst other situations. 

“This isn’t a game Solar.” 

“I know,” Solar said leaning back again. “But that can’t be the case with us all.” Irene gave her a questioning look before Solar leaned in again. “If you don’t want to treat her like a game then that is your choice. I know that Byul and I are more… tumultuous, but if you ever need a pointer of two, I am always open to helping you.”

Irene looked  to Solar who had a mixture of mischief and sadness in her eyes. She could see the waging emotions that seemed to have enraptured the other girl. “And if you ever need anything… I am here for you too.”

The meet up of said date was the halfway point of their houses. It was an interesting talk finding out how close they actually lived from each other. They apparently only lived with one street between them, the same street that led straight to the middle of the city life. Irene approached Wendy, who sat on the sidewalk, a long coat covering the hoodie that was on display under the coat and jeans. She was dressed warmer than Irene, who opted for a cute long sleeve and jean combo. Catching Irene’s eyes she stood up suddenly. 

“Irene!” Wendy shouted as she approached Irene with a wide smile. As they finally reached each other Wendy pulled a single flower from her coat and smiled, “I saw this on the walk over and thought it would look great in your hair.” Irene thanked her before letting Wendy put the flower in her hair. She took a step back before placing her hand on her chest. “Wow! How did you get so pretty!” 

“Oh my gosh!” Irene squealed out. “So cheesy!” Wendy gave her a laugh and a shoulder bump as they embarked on their journey to the town square. 

The small talk they had there was full of recaps from the day, including the odd encounter with Solar. Wendy brought up pairing with Seulgi and Yeri for Literature class and then the impending setlist for the dance. It didn’t take long at all. Their conversation was flowing endlessly, topics and stories galore. 

“So then I asked Seulgi if she could toss Byul out. I’m thinking that she would give her a launch up so Byul could curl in,” Irene said with a laugh. “She ended up tossing her in the trash can!” Wendy let out a snort.
