Yoon Sung
Behind The Limelight
Dong Hae’s POV
I looked at myself in the mirror. A wounded, sad and confused man stood straight. The look of perfection didn’t hide those distinct scars of his youth. There was a lot to fix in him for sure. The problem was he didn’t know how to start.
I left the mirror and put on my jacket. Today’s the day of seeing Yoon Sung. I feared the worst to come if I meet his eyes. They were full of hatred and disgust the last time I saw them. It promised revenge for me. I tried to clear out my mind but my brother’s wrecked image continued to haunt me.
“Hae, let’s go.” Si Won said at the doorway. He also wanted to meet my brother despite his disoriented state.
“Okay.” I dragged myself outside the room.
Eun Bi, Min Yeong, and Hyuk Jae were waiting for us inside the car. I sat between him and Si Won, making the atmosphere awkward between us. The whole drive was stark quiet, and the beeping of Eun Bi’s phone cracked the silence.
“Hello? Yeah, I’ll be there. I still have something to do. Can you wait? Thanks.” Then she ended the call and dropped the phone into her bag.
“Who’s that?” I asked.
“My manager.” She briefly answered and turned her gaze outside.
The car pulled up at the huge building. We headed straightly inside and went to his unit.
Min Yeong knocked thrice, only to find the door wasn’t locked. We let ourselves inside. I found Yoon Sung sitting on the sofa, half-, disheveled hair, hollow eyes with dark circles underneath, and a declining body. It looked like he hasn’t eaten for days. I wondered how he turned out this way. Even taking a look was hard for me. Si Won squeezed my hand to encourage me when I attempted to turn my back.
“Yoon Sung, your brother is here.” Min Yeong said calmly while patting him gently.
My brother looked at me and suddenly, his empty eyes turned into a deadly glare. He dashed for an attack but Min Yeong pushed him back on the sofa.
He wrapped his arms around him and tried to calm him down. I slowly approached him when I sensed that he’s already harmless, and knelt down in front of him.
“Hyung...” It was the first word that came out of my mouth. It was the only thing that I could say to him while tears welled up in my eyes. I took him in my arms and rested my chin on his shoulder.
“I’m sorry...”
After a long silence, he spoke up, but I never expected the things I heard.
“Do you know why you’re suffering right now? It’s all because of me. I took the video. I leaked it online. I kidnapped Hyuk Jae and forced him to bed. I followed you in Jinan...”
I waited for him to finish. My arms began to weaken while the tremor inside my heart shook me to my limits.
“And I paid people to beat up your beloved Si Won.”
At that moment, everyone was fueled with rage. Min Yeong loosened his hold. Hyuk Jae let out a breath of anger, while Si Won and Eun Bi remained composed yet boiling up.
I pulled away from him and looked at his eyes. I punched him hard to wake him up.
“Damn you!” I spat.
“Hae, he’s sick! You shouldn’t do that.” Eun Bi reprimanded.
I turned to her and with all my impatience, I talked back.
“Yeah, he’s sick! His mind is sick. How can a brother do that to his sibling? Can you explain that to me?”
She fell silent and walked out. I looked at Si Won who’s trying to suppress his outrage and Hyuk Jae whose eyes were lingered with tears. Now looking at my brother, I could feel my muscles reaching out to kill him, but my heart surged with pity. Judging his current state, I could really tell that he’s sick.
“I wrote the letter that was sent to you. I did all of these because I know a secret.” he said, but his eyes are fixated somewhere.
“What’s that damn thing?” Hyuk Jae asked.
Then Yoon Sung said it. Our father and Hyuk’s father were in love with each other. They kept their relationship secret to avoid hurting us. Our dad ran away with his dad, and when the latter died in a car accident, our dad committed suicide. That’s how I met Hyuk Jae.
“I don’t want you to end up like him, Hae.” he added.
“But you’re in love with Hyuk. You’re being like him yourself.” I answered.
I felt my life falling down into the seams. Fate’s been playing us all along, ruining our lives and shattering us up to our inner core until we couldn’t take it anymore. Hyuk Jae kicked the glass table as Si Won tried to calm him. Min Yeong stood up, bringing Yoon Sung into his room while whispering apologies.
In my part, there were a lot of things to be sorry about. But instead of saying those words, I sprang to my feet and ran away. The speed worsened those voices inside me. My feet created banging steps while trying to ward out the unwanted feelings.
Every single thing Yoon Sung just said screamed into my mind.
