Chapter 30: Disastrous Breakfast in Bed

Innocent Love

Jimin stares at the calendar, he still could not believe September was only three days away, He stares at the heart he drew on the calendar highlighting Jungkook’s Birthday, he smiles. Since he came out to his father a week ago, things have not been much difference between them, his father still talks to him even though Jimin, still feels like he does not want to come to term with it because they have not spoken about it since then. His dad would ask him about the internship and how is getting along there, if he is enrolled in the classes he needs for the fall semester but beyond that nothing about Jimin’s personal life. Even though the awkwardness was still there, he was glad his father did not hit the fan, he imagines it could worse but so far everything seemed well, his parents’ marriage went back to what it was, even though they were both busy with their own things, they still eat breakfast and dinner as a family. Since he received his first paycheck from the internship, he has been saving up so he can buy his own condo and move out from his parents, as much as he loves living with his parents, eating and talking with them, he wanted more privacy and also a sense of accomplishment since he gave up the dance school, he has been feeling a little under the weather, he did not realize how much he would miss dancing.

It was Wednesday and both Jungkook, had turned from their internship, Jimin decided to hang out at Jungkook’s house since his mom and Sana were both out for lunch. Jungkook was sitting at the computer playing a computer game, Jimin was not familiar with, so he just laid on the bed, reading one of Jungkook’s graphic novels or manga as Jungkook always reminds him of the name, his eye are on the book, at the pictures but his mind was on what to get Jungkook’s for his birthday, but he wanted to surprise him, he knew Jungkook is athletic, loves photography and film and video games but he already had all those things. His eyes scan the room, he already had a camera, a video game console, the newest one, Jimin sighs disappointed and frustrated, what do you get someone who already has everything they need? He pouts, gazing at Jungkook whose eyes were glued on the computer with his hoody on, Jimin picks up his phone, he snaps a picture of Jungkook on snapchat, with the status when someone is obsessed, everything else disappears,

“Jungkook-ah,” he calls,

“Hmmm,” says Jungkook,

“Jungkook-ah,” calls Jimin again, Jungkook glances at him,

“What?”

“What do you want for your birthday, it’s on Saturday?”

“Hmm,” says Jungkook, turning to face him, giving Jimin his full attention, “I don’t know.”

“Huh!” exclaims Jimin sitting up, “What do you mean you don’t know, it’s your twenty-first birthday, you don’t have a single wish?”

Jungkook stares at him, thinking, “Oh,” he says, “I always wanted to drink with you, now I can.” Jimin smiles, shaking his head, he picks up the graphic novel,

“Just go back to your game.” Jungkook chuckles, still facing him,

“Hyung,” he says, Jimin looks up from the book, “You don’t have to get anything special, just spending time with you on my birthday is special enough.” Jimin smiles but pretends he did not hear him, cheeks flushed,

“You’re so cheesy,” he mutters underneath his breath,

“What?” says Jungkook, going back to playing his game,

“Nothing,” says Jimin, laughing.

The rest of the day went by quickly, Jungkook invited Jimin to stay for dinner, but Jimin still feeling awkward eating with his mom and Sana, declined but after Jungkook glared at him, angry, Jimin gave in and stayed for dinner. The food was simple, his mom was in a mood for a hot pot, so the table was full of food and drinks,

“So, what’re you planning on doing for your birthday, Jungkook,” asks Sana,

“Hmm, not much,” replies Jungkook, “What is there to do?”

“You’re so lame,” she replies, “You’re turning twenty-one, go out and like drink your heart out.”

“Hmm, no thanks,” he replies, “That’s not really original, everyone does that, so what’s the point, it’s like I never drink now.” His mom looks at him, curious,

“You’ve drunk before?” asks his mom,

“Ah, yeah, with dad back in Seoul, at college parties and well just in general,” he replies quickly, shoving meat in his mouth, to avoid answering any more questions.

“Well,” says his mom, “You better have the night free on Saturday because I’m throwing you a huge party.”

Jimin looks at Jungkook’s mom, she smiles,

“Mom,” whines Jungkook, “I don’t want any party,”

“You used to love those parties, I would throw for you,” says his mom, looking disappointed.

“Yeah, when I was a kid,” says Jungkook, “I don’t want any party, besides I’m spending the day with Jimin.” His mom glances at Jimin, who forces a smile, feeling awkward, he glares at Jungkook, scolding him for dismissing his mom, Jungkook shrugs his shoulders eating.

“I’m going back to Seoul, after your birthday,” says Sana, everyone turns to look at her, confused at the randomness,

“Huh?” says Jungkook’s mom,

“Yeah, Summer is over in a few days,” she says, “I only came to spend some time with Jungkook, but he had his own plans.”

Silence fills the air, Jimin and Jungkook glance at each other, loss at words, Jimin realized they never bothered to take her out or hang out with her, she spent most of her time with Jungkook’s mom, he forces a smile, feeling a little bit bad, because he knew Jungkook’s dad wanted Sana to be with Jungkook despite coming out to him, he didn’t try to get to know her but what was the point, he had his own problems and issue to deal with.

“Sorry,” says Jungkook, breaking the silence, bringing everyone out of their head, they all look to him,

“Next time you come over for the summer, Jimin and I will show you all that is to see in California,” he says, smiling

“Yeah,” says Jimin, “Next time.”

Sana smiles at them, shaking her head, “Yeah, whatever,” she says, laughing, “What makes you think I want to be here next summer, I do have my own life, you know.”

The rest of the dinner went by smoothly, eating and chatting, after dinner, Jimin was starting to feel tired, he had woken up early for his internship and came back late in the evening, Jungkook had the same schedule so they were both exhausted. He says goodnight to Jungkook, declining the offer of walking him home, knowing he was tired as well. As he heads towards the door, he hears the Television in the living room, he goes to see who it is, Jungkook’s mom was laying on the couch in her nightgown, hair in a messy bun, watching a show, he was unfamiliar with it,

“Jimin?” she says, voice soft, exhausted, taking him by surprise, he clears his throat,

“I just wanted to say good night,” he says, walking in the living room,

“I thought you were sleeping over?” she says,

“Nah, were both tired and we have work tomorrow,” he explains, she shakes her head, silent, as trailing off,

“Um…” says Jimin, not sure of what to say, he wanted to let her know that Jungkook did not mean to dismiss her idea of throwing him a party like that without a thought, but he sure she knows that he is her son, who knows him better than her,

“Come sit with me for a minute,” she says, sitting up as if she can read his mind. Jimin walks towards her and sits down on the couch beside her, they smile at each other, it was silent for a minute, no one saying anything,

“You know he really likes you,” she says, clearing , Jimin stares down at his feet, but remains silent, wanting to listen to her,

“I missed out on a lot while he was living with his father, but every time, your mom and I would speak, she would tell him that Jungkook called you. I was surprised, he called you more than he would call me, at first, I just thought, you know, your friends, he just wanted to stay in touch with you. But one day, it was on his sixteenth birthday I think, he missed a call from you and couldn’t get a hold of you or something because I called him to wish him happy birthday, but he was so upset, he kept asking me if I talked to you, of course, I didn’t speak to you that day. He out of the blue asked me if you were seeing anybody?” she smiles, getting quiet for a second, Jimin stares at her silent,

“I knew by the tone of his voice, he really liked you, more than admiration, it was not a friendship thing, of course, I had no answer for him, you know he never told me he was gay?”

“He didn’t?” asks Jimin, dumbfounded,

“Nope,” she answers, “He came out to his father, and his father told me, upset, and that moment, I knew the reason why he was calling you more than me, he was in love with you, he always has been. No matter what rebellious phase he went through, his feelings for you never changed.”

Jimin looks at her, stunned, he never knew that, he always assumed Jungkook came out to both of his parents, he tries to think about that day she was describing, they have missed so many calls with each other, he could not recall, but he was happy, he now knows something about Jungkook, he did not know before, confident about their relationship but also sadden at the fact that just like his mother, he also missed out on a lot of time with Jungkook being in Seoul. He smiles, for the first time, happy that he turned down the school in New York, he would have missed on a lot more and have many regrets.

It was finally September first, Jungkook is finally twenty-one, but Jimin still had no idea what to do for his birthday, they were both off on Saturday, so spending time together was not an issue but he wanted to do something special, something to include everyone Jungkook loves, family and friends, even though Jungkook declined any form of party idea. Jimin stares at the clock, he has been up for a while, he could not sleep, with so many thoughts in his head, his relationship with Jungkook is his first relationship, he had no clue what couples do on birthdays, but he wanted to do something to show Jungkook, that he means more to him than he could ever imagine. He wanted to show Jungkook that he valued him as much and maybe even more than Jungkook does him but everything he could think of was something Jungkook dismissed already, he ruffles his hair annoyed, he gets off the bed and goes to take a shower. After showering he heads downstairs, he was up earlier than usual, so he wonders if his parents were up. He heads to the kitchen and the cook was in the kitchen, he greets him, grabbing a bottle of water, he smiles, getting an idea, he could totally take breakfast in bed for Jungkook, that is if he was not up, but knowing him, he is probably sleeping in like he usually does,

“Can you help me make a light breakfast for someone’s birthday?” he says, pleading, the cook laughs,

“I can just make for you, Jimin,” he replies, Jimin smiles but declines, he wanted to make the breakfast himself but wanted some pointers from the chef so he doesn’t mess it up, the chef laughs, stepping aside to help him cook breakfast, the chef showed him how to make heart shaped toast filled with strawberry cream, sunny side up eggs which burned at first but was able to get a hang of it after the fourth try, walnut muffins and berry pancakes, with freshly squeezed orange juice, which was the easiest for him to make. He puts everything on the tray, not wanting it to cool down, he has one of the maids help him carry the juice, he didn’t want to make to trips or for the food to cool down, he heads down towards Jungkook’s house, thanking God, for it being close by, he rings the bell and after saying his name, the gate opens.  He has the maid knock on the door, he thanks her and takes the juice from her, waiting for the door to open. Sana opens the door, she stares at Jimin, who walks past her,

“Oppa, it likes seven o’clock,” she mumbles, “What’re you doing here so early?” Jimin laughs, walking past her,

“Sorry,” he says, “Didn’t mean to wake you up, is Jungkook up?”

“I don’t think so,” she says, “his mom and I are having breakfast.”

“Awesome,” says Jimin, he walks to the dining room to greet his mom, her and Sana just stared at him as if he was crazy before bursting out laughing,

“Did you walk here with that tray?” asks his mom,

“I wanted to surprise him,” says Jimin,

“That’s cute,” says Sana sarcastically, sitting back down, “You know you could’ve come and cook here, so you don’t walk around with food.” Jimin glares at her, ignoring her, he walks upstairs to Jungkook’s room, balancing the tray with one hand, the tray was wobbling from side to side, as he tries to open the door, as soon he as soon as he was about to turn the doorknob, the door opens, causing him to lose balance and the tray splash on the floor, food everywhere,

“Hyung!” shouts Jungkook, surprised.

Jimin froze and eyes glued on the tray of food on the floor and juice all over the carpet, he frowns, angry, he looks at Jungkook, who was as shocked as he was, eyes wide and mouth open, Jimin tighten his fists,

“Hyung,” says Jungkook, “Wha….” His eyes scan the food on the floor, confused

“My breakfast,” mutters Jimin, dimly, “Everything I worked hard for.”

“Did you cook?" says Jungkook, running his fingers through his hair, “Hyung, , sorry, I didn’t realize you were at the door.” Jimin glares at Jungkook, but realizes he could not be mad at him, he did not mean to it besides he was the clumsy one, trying to carry a tray of food and open a door, Jungkook kneels picking up the tray and picking up the food, putting them on the tray,

“Ya!” scolds Jimin, kneeling, “You’re messing up your hands, just tell someone to clean it up.” Jungkook ignores him, putting everything back on the plate,

“Sorry Jiminie-hyung,” he says, softly, Jimin sighs, shaking his head,

“It’s not your fault, stop apologizing,” he says, picking up the plate, and placing it on top of the drawer, Jungkook comes out of the bathroom with a small towel, placing it over the juice that spilled, Jimin sits on the bed,

“I thought you were sleeping,” he complains, Jungkook chuckles,

“It’s my birthday, why would I be sleeping,” he says, “I was waiting to get a call from someone, but it never came.”

Jimin stares at him baffled, “What call?”

“A birthday wish  from my boyfriend,” he says, eyeballing Jimin, “But you never called or texted me.”

Jimin’s mouth slightly opens, silent for a second before laughing, he shakes his head in disbelieve,

“I was going to, but I thought it was cheesy,” he explains, “So I thought it would be romantic and meaningful to make you breakfast in bed instead.”

Jungkook laughs, he leaves the towel there and goes to wash his hands, Jimin’s eyes follow him. He comes out and sits on the bed next to Jimin shoulder to shoulder,

“You’re so silly,” says Jungkook, “I said you didn’t have to do anything, just a simple text or call would’ve been enough.” Jimin crosses his hands, glaring at him and pouting,

“I just wanted to do something special,” he mutters. Jungkook sighs, gazing at him, clearing his throat,

“Thanks,” he says, “It was sweet of you to do, I’m sure it would’ve been a wonderful surprise but I’m still happy, you cooked for me even though it ended up messy.” Jimin sighs, gazing at Jungkook,

“Happy Birthday, Jungkook-ah,” he says, smiling.

Jungkook nudges him with his shoulder, “Thanks.” He stands up extending his hand for Jimin, he smiles taking Jungkook’s hand, standing face to face, Jungkook’s places his hand on Jimin’s head, patting it, Jimin blushes at childish gesture, but his heart skips a beat, feeling warm,  it has been a while since Jungkook that way, so he could not help but smile.

“Jiminie-hyung, you’re so adorable,” says Jungkook laughing, Jimin clenches his teeth, annoyed but cheeks flushing red, he pushes Jungkook’s hand off,

“Ya!” he scolds, “Am I dog, what do you mean adorable?”

“But you are adorable, like a puppy,” he continues teasing Jimin, walking out the room, Jimin walks after him, punching him on the shoulder as they head downstairs, laughing.

He continues teasing Jimin, while he continues hitting him and laughing. Jimin was happy, even though his breakfast in bed did not go as planned, he realize Jungkook’s is right, he does not have to do anything extra to show his affection for Jungkook, he realized just want he needed to do to make Jungkook’s birthday special, he curses himself for not thinking about it earlier; just like his mom wanted, he decided to just have their first dinner together as a couple with their parents and friends, Jungkook’s mom would be happy because it was something, she always did for Jungkook’s birthday, she would invite his friends and have a party but this time since Jungkook declines a huge party, a simple dinner should be enough.
