Chapter 14: Personal Portfolio

Innocent Love

They approach a red light, Jimin stops, he glances over at Jungkook, who was to busy fondling with his camera. Jimin remembers clearly saying I love you to Jungkook last night when he slept over at his place. Jimin woke up early and left in a hurry, he has been freaking out all morning, wondering if Jungkook heard him say it. He was surprised when Jungkook appeared at his house, in his blue ripped up jeans and white t-shirt with a denim jacket and a backpack. Jimin had completely forgotten Jungkook invited him to go to the park so he can take pictures for his portfolio. The ride to the Lake Balboa Park was quiet,

“It’s been a while since I have been to any parks,” he says looking at Jungkook,

“Yeah, me too,” replies Jungkook, still fondling with his camera.

The lights turn green and he drives, stealing glances at Jungkook, he clears his throat,

“Sorry for drinking too much and dragging you out to pick me up,” he says. Jungkook stops fondling with his camera and looks at Jimin,

“It’s fine,” says Jungkook, “It wasn’t that late, I was still up.”

“So, did you hear anything last night?” asks Jimin, cringing at the ridiculous vague question he asked, Jungkook stares at him, puzzled, “What?”

“Nothing,” says Jimin, forget it, he probably didn’t hear it or else he would’ve said something, right? I mean I love you are a huge step in a relationship, he would surely say something if he heard it.

“Hyung, take a turn here,” says Jungkook,

“,” curses Jimin, he makes a quick turn, he almost drove past the park, they look for a parking lot, it was still early in the morning, so the park wasn’t as crowded as it usually is. He parks the car and Jungkook grabs a bag out of the trunk and hands it to Jimin, almost dropping it due to how heavy it was,

“What's in this?”

“Just stuff,” replies Jungkook, closing the trunk, he takes the bag from Jimin and they start to walk. Not knowing where they are headed, Jimin follows Jungkook. The weather felt great in the morning, it wasn’t hot or cold, there was a breeze but just slightly, it felt refreshing on Jimin’s skin,

“What are you going to take pictures of anyway?”

“Anything that captures my eyes,” replies Jungkook.  After walking for a while, they start to see the lake, Jimin laughs,

“Are you those cherry blossom trees,” he asks pointing.

“Yeah, but they haven’t bloomed yet, I heard they bloom very well around spring,” says Jungkook, he takes his camera and snaps a picture. Jimin hears quacking, he runs towards the lake, he kneels looking down at the ducks in the water, Jungkook clicks another picture.

“Let’s go,” says Jungkook.

After walking around for an hour, it was lunch time, Jimin’s stomach starts to grumble, he starts to drag his feet,

“We are almost there,” says Jungkook,

“Almost where?”

“The picnic area,” he replies.

Jimin frowns, “How are we going to eat if we didn’t bring any food.” Jungkook laughs, as he continues to walk, they reach the picnic area, there were some people sitting down at the tables, but it was not full. They find an empty table and sit down. Jungkook places the bag on the table, he opens it, and pulls out a small basket, Jimin smiles,

“You had this whole thing planned out, didn’t you?”

Jungkook laughs, and nods, they place the cloth over the table and places grilled chicken sandwiches, a Fruit salad with watermelon, nectarines, herbs, and a spicy lemon honey dressing, a jug of orange juice and chocolate chips cookies, on top of the cloth.

“Is this a date?” asks Jimin with a smirk.

Jungkook nods his head, he pulls out a piece of paper with a drawing on it and hands it to Jimin, puzzled, he takes the paper, his eyes widen, dumbfound, it was a picture he drew in middle school when the teacher asked them to draw their most memorable memories with someone they loved, everything was starting to make sense. The picture he drew was when his mother and Jungkook’s mother took both of them to the park and had a picnic, they paddled boats, fed the ducks and played on the playground. Jimin laughs,

“I remember how much you cried when we were leaving,” teases Jungkook, Jimin glares at him,

“Why do you have my drawing anyway?”

“Because I wanted it,” he replies, making Jimin blush.

“Let’s eat,” says Jimin, picking up a small triangle grilled chicken sandwich and biting it. Baffled and touched that this whole time Jungkook  had it planned for them, he starts to giggle,

“So, the whole portfolio thing was a lie?”

“Nah, I am taking pictures for a portfolio,” responses Jungkook. Jimin glares at him frowning, he puts down the sandwich,

“What?”

“So, our first date, is also a way for you to get something done for school?” asks Jimin, upset.

“I never said it was for school, it’s a personal portfolio.”

“Personal Portfolio?” asks Jimin, confused, “What’s that?”

“I’ll show you when I have it done,” replies Jungkook.

After having a picnic, Jimin and Jungkook paddled boats, it’s been a while since Jimin has been to the park, reliving all the things they did at the park when they were kids, and Jungkook taking pictures at every chance he gets. The sun was starting to get strong, they spent the whole day at the park, doing many activities before getting exhausted.

They decide to relax before heading home, they sit at the edge of the lake with their shoes off, touching the water with their toes, and looking at the ducks far away, Jimin places his hand on Jungkook’s hand,

“I had fun today, thanks.”

“I had fun too,” says Jungkook, “I was scared you would think it was lame, that’s why I didn’t say anything.”

“Lame?” I mean I guess it isn’t your traditional first dates, I mean who goes to a park on their first dates,” he teases, Jungkook glares at him, Jimin moves closer to him, sitting shoulder to shoulder. He takes Jungkook’s hand resting it on his thigh, he interlocks his fingers with his, squeezing tightly, caressing his hand,

“You really didn’t hear it?” Jungkook turns to look at him and smiles,

“Hear what?” he says with a smirk, Jimin examines his face, trying to read him, but couldn’t make out what he is thinking,

“Ohhhhh, you mean when said I love you,” he says unable to pretend anymore, Jimin lets go of his hand, surprised,

“So you did hear me? Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Did you mean it?” asks Jungkook serious, “I am not sure if you said at the moment or if you really mean it.”

“Of course, I mean it!” shouts Jimin, angry, startling Jungkook, “Why would I say it if I didn’t mean it.”

Jungkook shrugs his shoulder, “Sometimes I wonder why you like me so much?” he says, looking down at the water, Jimin stares at him dumbfounded, Jungkook looks at him, serious,

“Since we were kids, you befriended me and expressed your feelings so easily. I looked up to you because you treated me so well, always looked out for my best interest and fed me even though I ignored you. At first, I thought my feelings for you were misplaced. I often wondered if I was mistaking admiration for love but as soon as I saw you I knew I was not misplacing anything. But so many years passed but I was so happy when you said I love you to me last night. I know you’re not out to your parents” Jimin stares at him surprised, He knows? How?”

“It’s okay,” continues, Jungkook, “As long as we are together, that’s is all that matters because I’m in love with you too.” Jimin’s eyes grew wide, his heart racing, he was not expecting Jungkook to confess his feelings so bluntly, he was never much for words, he must’ve been thinking about this for a while. Lost at words, they both sat there in silence, holding hands, Jimin smiles, he shoves Jungkook, wanting to get rid of the seriousness and feeling shy, surprising Jungkook, who nearly fell to the other side as he stops himself with his hands.

“What was that for, hyung?”

“I love you, no reason at all,” says Jimin, “I always have and always will, don’t ever doubt that.” He stands up, he extends his hand for Jungkook, Jungkook takes his hand, soft and gentle, as Jimin pulls him up, both laughing, Jimin pats him on the head,

“Let’s go home,” he says, “Or else, they’ll start to think we eloped or something.” They both laugh and start to walk.

They reach home and Jimin drives through and parks the car and they both get out, with the promise of showing Jimin his personal portfolio, they head to Jungkook’s house, laughing and chatting, they walk into the house, they hear chatters coming from the living room, they both stop in their tracks, it was Jungkook’s father chatting with his mom in Korean, besides them was a Korean girl, young she looks like the same age as Jungkook, the girl sees them,

“Jungkookie!” she says walking towards him and hugging him, What the ! Jimin stands there frozen, Jungkook pushes the girl off him, and walks to his father,

“When did you get here?”

“I’m here for a business-convention,” says his father, “I thought I would visit you and your mom while I'm here.”

“You would’ve known if you answered your phone,” says his mom.

“It was off, What is she doing here?” he says pointing at the girl.

“Oh, she is gonna stay here for a while,” says his dad, “She wanted to take a vacation, so I brought her with me.” The girl walks to Jungkook, putting her arm around his shoulder, Jimin’s mouth drops, who the is she? Jimin watches them as they talk back and forth as if he was invisible until he locks eyes with Jungkook’s father,

“Are you Park Jimin?” Startled and shock, all he can do is nod his head,

“Wow, you’re really the son of Min-ho and Shi Ah?”

“Yes, uncle,” replies Jimin, clearing his voice, ever since he can remember, Jungkook’s father has always been strict and serious, he remembers seeing him smile like twice when he was young, those times, he never really acknowledged Jimin. Jimin’s hands start to shake, feeling intimidated,  Jungkook walks back to his side,

“He looks like his mother, doesn’t he?” says the mom, “Let’s sit down.”

They sit down, Jimin forces a smile, trying not to be awkward,

“Who is she?” he whispers to Jungkook, he looks at the girl, Jungkook bites his lower lips, Jimin examines him, noticing he seemed tense, tenser than him. Jimin nudges at him, Jungkook looks at him,

“My dad’s goddaughter,” he whispers back.

“Are you Jungkookie’s friend?” she asks in Korean, Jimin stares at her, he understands Korean but it’s a while since he has spoken it, his mom and dad never speak Korean to him even though they insisted he learned Korean when he was in elementary school.

“Yes,” replies Jimin, the girl nods her head and extends her hand,

“I’m Go Sana,” she says in Korean, “Nice to meet you.” Jimin smiles, she seems friendly, did they grow up together? Goddaughter huh? he shakes her hand.

Jungkook stands up, startling and confusing Jimin, “Let’s go,” he says looking at Jimin, Jimin eyes went from Jungkook to his parents, who were silently watching them before getting up and following Jungkook.
