Chapter 29: Confession

Innocent Love

Jimin’s mother decided to make dinner, and he was in a good mood, so he decided to help her cook, even though his mom was scolding him because he was making a mess instead. They exchange looks and laugh, he missed these moments with his mother, when he was little he would always be in the kitchen next to her, helping her by giving her the stuff she asked for. He never learned to cook but he wanted to at least learn how to make desserts, he wanted to make something for Jungkook’s twenty-first birthday, coming up in two weeks, and then summer would be over, he was glad he did not move to New York, he realized he would miss out on a lot, even though he misses dancing, he dances when he as time but more then anything, he was glad he was gonna be there for Jungkook’s birthday, realizing it will be the first birthday they are going to be together since he came back. But he wanted to be out to his father before Jungkook’s birthday, with his father’s work schedule and his internship, he has not had the time to sit down and have a conversation with his father, so he decided he is never going to get the perfect time, so he would just speak with his father after dinner, he told his mom and she said she would be beside him for support.

“Can you go set the table?” says his mom,

“Yap,” says Jimin, stacking three plates, bowls, and glasses, on top of each other,

“Ya!” Scolds his mom, “You’re going to break them.” She takes the glasses and bowls and puts them on the counter,

“One at a time, Jimin,” she says, frowning, he grins, nodding his head, he takes the plates and sets them on the table, for his mom, dad and one for himself.

After they were done, cooking and setting the table, Jimin sighs, looking at the table, he looks at the watch on the wall,

“Dad’s going to be home for dinner, right?” he asks, worried, that his plans would be ruin, today is the perfect day, his dad was in a good mood and so was his mom, for once he was not scared, he was nervous anticipating his father’s response, but he is still feeling encouraged to go through with it. His mom places her hand on his shoulder, giving it a squeeze and a smile, telling him to be calm, his father is on his way home.

Jimin puts a fried vegetable on his dad’s plate, smiling, his father smiles back at him but was confused, he looks at his mom, she shakes her head, smiling and eating.

“How was work?” asks Jimin,

“Um…,” says his father, “Work was good, I heard you did pretty good too.” Jimin glares at his father,

“Are you keeping tabs on me?”

His father laughs, “Not tabs, just updates,” he replies, “I’m glad my son is attentive and eager to learn.”

“Mrs. Garcia said that?” asks Jimin, surprised, “She’s always serious and stern, just like you.” His father snorts, “I’m stern? Anyway, she’s fond of you.” The rest of the dinner went by smoothly, Jimin helps his mom clear the table, even though told him to sit and talk with his father, he declined, feeling too nervous to bring up the topic, he helps his mom load the dishes in the dishwasher,

“You need to go talk to your father,” precedes his mom, “You keep dragging it out, you’ll never be up to it.”

“Arghhhh,” complains Jimin, “Things are good now, do I have?”

His mom crosses her arms, frowning, “You don’t have too, you can keep lying to your father and he can keep setting you up on dates.” Jimin bites his lip, fidgeting with his fingers, not appreciating his mom’s sarcasm but he knows she is right, if he does not go through with it now, his father will never stop setting him and he’ll have to continue lying about his relationship with Jungkook. He takes a deep breath,

“I’ll finish up cleaning,” says his mom, slightly pushing him out of the kitchen,

“Talk to him, he is your father after all, how upset can he be?” Jimin walks back to the dining room, but his father was not in the dining room. Jimin sighs, and walks to look for him in his home office, he knocks on the door, and his fathers tells him to come in,

“Busy?”

“Not, really,” says his father, “I was going to call you to join me for a father to son conversation.” Jimin raises his eyebrows, curious, his father wanted to talk to him to, his father motions for him to sit down, Jimin takes a seat at the chair across from his father, his eyes scanning the office, there were many books and family portrait, his eyes land on a picture of him and his father, he could not have been more than three years old, he smiles at the picture, his father clears his throat,

“So, what are your plans?” asks his father, Jimin was stunned at the sudden question, he shrugs his shoulders,

“Future plans?”

“Yes,” says his father, “You’re almost twenty-three years old, I was younger than you when my father spoke to me about marriage, so I’m asking you what your plans are? I want to know because kids your generation, take commitment and obligations for granted, you don’t like to be told how to live your life and I respect that, but I don’t want a child of mine, to be growing up aimlessly without plans.” Jimin gulps, having a hard time thinking of what to say, he was hoping this talk with his father had nothing to do with marriage but of course, he knew better,

“Well, first I want to be successful,” says Jimin, “At everything I do, I want you to be proud of me and…”

“I’m proud of you,” interrupts his father, Jimin sighs, and continues,

“And…I also want you to love me as me,” his father looks at him puzzled,

“What do you mean? When have you ever not been you?” Jimin gets silent for a second, thinking of ways to say it without shocking his father but every scenario he can come up with had the same results,

“Um, if I was to tell you, I am dating someone, someone you know very well, someone you probably never thought of, would still accept them?” His dad looks at him confused, but remained quiet, listening to him, sitting up straight,

“Um, I can’t be with Sulli because I’m in love with someone else,” says Jimin,

“Who?”

“Well, it’s a long story,” says Jimin, laughing, relieving his anxiousness, “Well, actually not a long story…”

“You’re talking in circles,” says his father, eyeing him, “You don’t that when you’re too scared to tell me something, what is it?”

“Ah, I’m…gay,” says Jimin, quietly, his father stares at him,

“What?”

“I’m gay and I’m in love with Jungkook!” he shouts, eyes closed, not wanting to see his father’s reaction, it was quiet, he slightly opens his eyes, biting his lip, his father was staring at him, eyes widen and silent,

“Dad?” says Jimin, “Please say something?” Silence fills the room, his father exhales,

“Your gay and in love with Jungkook?” repeats his father, baffled, “How is that possible? I mean, that’s something that is…” his voice trails off, Jimin stares at his father, he couldn’t tell what he was thinking, he looked more confused than angry,

“Well, I have known for a long time, I just didn’t know how to tell you,” explains Jimin, “I… was scared you would hate me or be disappointed in me.” His dad exhales, dumbfounded, looking at him,

“Hate?” he says, “I don’t hate you, why would I hate you? I'm…just confused.”

“What about?”

“I…mean, you’ve never been in a relationship, not with a boy or girl, how do you know your gay?” Jimin wanted to laugh but he keeps it inside,

“Well, I mean, I don’t think you have to be in a relationship to know who or what attracts you, dad.” His dad shakes his head, fidgeting with his finger, Jimin smiles to himself,

“So, you’re not mad?”

“No, I’m not mad,” he says, softly, “I’m just gonna have to ask you to give me some time.”

“Time?”

“Yes, Time,” says his father, “This is truly something that I…”

“Okay,” says Jimin, standing up, heading for the door, he turns to look at his father, who was slouched back against his chair, hand on his forehead, Jimin wanted to ask him what he was thinking and feeling but he just couldn't. He closes the door, and his mom, was standing in front of him, she sighs and walks to him, hugging him.

“It’ll be alright,” she says, patting his back, “Everything will be alright, your dad just needs time to process everything okay.” Jimin buries his face, sniffing, trying to hold back his tears but he couldn’t, he hugs his mom, tight, fears and worries disappearing, he was happy his father knows the truth about him, but he could not help the heavy feeling in his chest, he really did not want to disappoint his father, thoughts of how his father reacted to Taehyung being gay in high school comes flashing in his mind, what if he is not able to accept it? He told Jimin to break off his friendship with Taehyung, Jimin knows people change but what if his feelings never change.

“You’re okay,” says his mom, patting his head, “I’m proud of you, no matter how stubborn you can be at times, your father and I will always love you no matter what, your father will come around, trust me.”
