Review Rubric

Title [ -- / 10 ]

Creativity: Does it relate to the plot on a deeper level? Or does it blatantly state what the story is about without any room for interpretation? Does it fit with the style of writing or theme of the story?

Characters [ -- / 50 ]

Development: Are the characters dynamic? Do they have more than one track minds? Is there more than meets the eye, or is everything laid out in character descriptions at the beginning?

Voice: Are the characters different or are they all the same person but with different names?

Grammar/Spelling [ -- / 25 ]

Correct Usage: Overall, are you able to piece together a coherent piece of writing?

Tenses: Are you sticking to one tense? If you are not, are the tense usage/switching properly done? Is there a meaning for the change or are you simply confused?

Plot [ -- / 75 ]

Intrigue: Does your story entice readers? This will be based on how well your description catches my attention. Also, I will pay mind to your subscribed readers’ opinions of the piece.

Originality: Is the plot enjoyed because it’s a cliché or is it enjoyed because it’s unique/different?

Coherency: Are the plot details consistent throughout the story?

Story Structure [ -- / 75]

Point of View Coordination: Do you stay with one P.O.V. or do you jump around? Are you able to switch P.O.V.’s fluidly or is the switch choppy and unprofessional? Are you going from 3rd Person to 1st person in the middle of a thought, paragraph, etc.?

Realism (in terms of story setting): Is your story staying with the original idea or are you straying? This category will depend on how well you structure the Alternate Universe or in other cases, how well you reflect our reality/society.

Functionality: Are you giving your readers a chance to formulate their own ideas? Are you giving them everything they need to know right away – plot-wise or character-wise? Does the reader grow with the characters as the story progresses?

Style [ -- / 60 ]

Personality: Have you developed your own style of writing? Does your story break molds on a stylistic level? If I were to read one of your other pieces, would I be able to tell you are the author simply based on your writing?

Description: Is your description meaningful or is it there to simply fill space?

Dialogue: Do you properly format dialogue? Are the characters getting separate paragraphs every time they speak or are you bunching them all together? Is your dialogue meaningful to the story/chapter or is it just there to be there? Is it clear who is speaking at all times? Is it clearly purposeful when you are trying to hide the speaking character’s identity or does it just come off as carelessness/sloppiness?

Clichés: Are you following a set pattern of clichés? That is, are you using familiar plots, personalities, and scenes without adding anything to make it individual to your story? Does it appear that you could’ve easily taken a scene from another story and simply reworded it?

“Flow”: Are you pacing your story well? Does the reader easily follow paragraphs/dialogue because it is naturally formed? Is it difficult to get absorbed in the story?

Formatting: How is the readability? Did you publish your story with large spaces, big font, etc. to make it appear longer/deeper/intricate?

Literary Devices [ -- / 5 ]

Metaphors, similes, alliteration, aphorisms, repetition, etc. : Did you use devices or did you not?

Extras/Bonuses [ -- / -- ]

Readers Enjoyment: Are the comments you’re receiving thoughtful, honest, etc. Or are they short, careless and unreflective of your plot? (For example, “Update Soon!”, “Nice chapter!”)

Particular Snippets of…: Were there any parts of your story that made me laugh, smile, cry, yell, etc.

Improvement: Are you improving as the story goes on? Are you growing as a writer? Is your plot expanding and deepening? If the story is complete, does the ending reflect your growth as a writer?

Enjoyment: Would I subscribe to this? Would I have read it without being prompted to by a review request? Would I recommend it to anyone?

Chapter 44: I'd just like to say a massive thank you for such an in-depth review! You're totally right about using this story specifically as an outlet for experimentation for my serious work. It's more been a test to see how self-indulgent my prose can become without being tethered to proper storylines or fleshed-out characters (hence the threadbare plot). As if turns out: pretty indulgent in places, and I'm glad you've pointed that out, since re-reading the first four chapters especially, it comes across in places as a little too descriptive for description's sake. And to answer another few quick questions - the events surrounding the apocalyptic event are deliberately vague, as I prefer readers to make their own assumptions rather than spell it out (is it nuclear war? A supervolcano? etc.), Irene and the others saw the state of Seulgi etc. and drew them in out of compassion (so to say, they knew they were "armed", but not armed and dangerous, haha), Seulgi actually has a foot infection, which is fleshed out in Chapters 10 and (especially) 11 and 12, which are WIP, although it could definitely be more pronounced in the early chapters, and the glass/plastic bags is a silly plothole I'm already editing haha.

I'd just like to say once again, thank you for such a fantastic review! It means a lot!

Story Title: Unfaithful

Story Link: https://www.asianfanfics.com/story/view/1207264/unfaithful-angst-cheating-drama-mpreg-hunhan-baekyeol-chanlu

Area of Help: Do you think my story has a lot of loopholes and is it too hard to get a grip of the whole plot line? Was i conveying the right emotions for every scenes? Is the story moving so slow? I really want to know your in depth thoughts about my characters and their relationship with one another. Most of all, please do not hesitate to point out the flaws of the story. It’s okay to be brutally honest and I don’t mind. I just badly want to improve. Thank you!

Review Type: Serious Review

Specifications: Please please do point out every flaws and error that you will see and your brutal thoughts and feelings for their characterizations.

Story Title: The Longest Night

Story Link: https://www.asianfanfics.com/story/view/1326292/the-longest-night-dark-horror-seulgi-yeri-joy-postapocalyptic-wendy-slowbuild-irene-redvelvet-seulrene

Area of Help: No help really needed, just looking for feedback and reviews, although the first two chapters are extremely rough and will need revising at some point.

Review Type: Serious

Specifications: I have a very specific prose style (I grew up with McCarthy and Faulknerisms to an insane degree) and would prefer feedback on the prose if nothing else, since the neologisms and compounds are very much a part of my style of writing and I wonder how they come across to people outside my lit circle. Any sort of overall review is more than welcome. Thank you :)

Story Title: Hot Streak

Story Link: http://www.asianfanfics.com/story/view/1061397/hot-streak-texting-jimin-bts-bangtanboys-jungkook-jikook-snapchat

Area of Help: This is a completed story; however, I'm curious to get feedback about ways in which I can improve it in any way.

Review Type: Serious

Specifications: I know this story is not perfect at ALL, and I'm wondering what I can do to make it that much better. I never re-read the I write so I often find myself seeing typos and grammar mistakes here and there. Please let me know how the story reads to you, and how it can be better - also, if you find any mechanical errors, please let me know what I should change. :)

Why do you want this review? I have never had a story of mine reviewed thus far, and I've written quite a few. Not only am I curious as to what they will look like stacked against a rubric, but also I'm always looking to improve as a writer, and any feedback (good or bad) is appreciated. :)
