Honest heart
It’s just the same storyJaejoong stood at BoA’s house door for a minute trying to calm his nervousness. He took out his hand from his pocket and he was about to ring the doorbell when he stopped.
He shouldn’t arrive empty handed, right?
Jaejoong walked a few blocks to where a small store was located. There he bought a box of chocolates and a few candies remembering there was a kid in the house. And as he made his way back to BoA’s house he sighed looking at the sky.
He had been way too childish by getting mad at BoA before and he knew it. He was just so shocked by the news that he had actually forgotten the long time they had been apart. He couldn’t even blame her, after all he was the one who left without notice and came back the same way.
So now he was finally ready to face this new BoA, because as things had changed so much he was sure now he needed more time to get used to it, but with the same conviction, he was sure he wasn’t giving up this time.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
The car kept moving and BoA continued looking at the beautiful scenery in the sky through the window while Yoobin talked excitedly from the back seat.
It was a peaceful moment for BoA when she heard her name being called.
“BoA, as soon as Yoobin picks her things we will leave to my house.”
She saw Yoochun’s lips moving but she couldn’t listen to his words. She had been so focused on her thoughts and the scenery that his voice was like a wake up call.
“What?” She asked confused.
“I’ll take Yoobin to my house when she picks her things, so don’t make her dinner.” Yoochun said without looking at her.
“Why will you take her to your house?!” BoA asked alarmed as if Yoochun had said something ridiculous.
He frowned at her before responding.
“Because it’s Friday…”
“Oh…I had forgotten that it was Friday.” BoA said slowly looking at her lap.
“What’s wrong with you?” Yoochun asked with his eyes focusing on the road again because he didn’t want to show that he was indeed worried about BoA’s lack of response. Mostly because in the morning she had been really cheerful and active.
“Mommy has been acting weird these days. She acts as if she saw a ghost.”
Yoobin said these words jokingly, but Yoochun gave BoA a worried but quick look before he continued looking at the front.
BoA didn’t say a word because she couldn’t deny she had been really distracted lately and especially now that things were going good at her work.
…………………………………………………
Yoochun’s car stopped at BoA’s front door and Yoobin ran happily to the door ready to pick her bag and Minnie Mouse plushy.
Her parents stayed at the door, BoA sighing while Yoochun looked at her worriedly.
“Are you ok?” He wanted to ask more, but he guessed it was best to keep things like this since there was still tension between them.
BoA sighed again before frowning at him.
“Why do you care? I don’t want another humiliating remark from you.”
“Why can’t we talk normally? Why do we always have to fight? I’m honestly asking you if something it’s wrong. I can see Yoobin is worried about you.” Yoochun tried to hide his feelings once again afraid of shocking BoA more than what her face was showing at the moment.
And while the silence replaced their voices BoA looked at him wondering why he was behaving like that. He had no reason to ask her that and mostly not in the way he was asking. It was as if he was truly concerned.
But her thoughts were cut when Yoobin appeared smiling between them.
“Bye Mommy! See you on Monday.” The little girl said extending her arms to hug her mother.
BoA hugged her daughter tightly and kissed her cheek before saying goodbye.
The three of them walked to the car again and BoA half smiled when Yoochun waved a goodbye.
How is it that things were even more awkward now? How come Yoochun seemed worried all of a sudden?
BoA kept asking herself those questions as she saw Yoochun driving away when suddenly she jumped startled as she felt a hand over her shoulder.
She turned around rapidly and her eyes widened in shock when she saw the person behind her.
“Jaejoong…” She said breathing heavily.
If he had appeared just a few moments ago he would have seen Yoochun and Yoobin again and she wouldn’t have known how to deal with that situation.
And during the short moment they greeted each other and BoA invited him in, she was acting mechanically too lost in how Jaejoong had appeared all of the sudden at her door.
BoA continued acting like a robot until Jaejoong’s smirk made her freeze.
He was looking attentively to the picture she had in the living room.
And she suddenly felt embarrassed because as much as she liked the picture, having Jaejoong back unexpectedly and with that expression made her remember some embarrassing moments of the past.
That moment in which she wanted to hide behind a rock when her mother showed Jaejoong all the embarrassing pictures she had.
Because even though they had known each other since childhood, when they were a couple, her mother just showed him the pictures she had specially reserved for when BoA had a boyfriend, making her even more embarrassed with that remark.
But now she was the one at fault so she tried to change the subject before Jaejoong could ask something.
“Do you want something to drink?” She asked with flushed cheeks as he was still looking at the picture.
Jaejoong nodded but before BoA could leave the living room he continued.
“Actually I wanted to give these candies to Yoobin, where is she?” Jaejoong asked smiling a bit feeling nervous at his encounter with the little girl.
But BoA was serious and she just replied softly.
“First I’ll bring the glass of water.”
Jaejoong frowned thinking that maybe it wasn’t the best moment or the best thing to say first, but for him it was important to get to know Yoobin.
BoA returned with the glass and sat beside Jaejoong sighing.
It wasn’t that she felt annoyed by his words; it was just that it seemed that Junsu couldn’t stop telling him everything she wanted to explain.
But if he already knew that much, it was better for her to explain her point on this encounter.
“Jaejoong, I’m going to be serious and I want you to listen to me. I don’t think I owe you an explanation because of what happened at the elementary school since it was a family matter, but at the same time, I do think I owe you an explanation because I left you alone after you invited me to drink coffee and accompanied me there.” BoA took a deep breathe before she continued.
“Well, Yoobin is my daughter and she is six years old. The man you saw it’s her father and we took her to the hospital because she had a minor infection.”
And when BoA stopped talking they remained silent.
Jaejoong just looked at her not believing that was the entire explanation since she had barely mentioned the other guy and how things were between them, but he was also aware he couldn’t ask for more so he just sat there in silence.
But then suddenly BoA grabbed his hands.
“Jaejoong, I’m going to be honest with you. I have thought of this a lot.” And she continued forgetting all her embarrassment because the time of being honest had arrived for her.
“I missed you and I’m glad to see you again, but at this moment I’m at an important stage in my life and now my decisions will not only affect me, because I have a daughter to take care of.”
And as her words reached him, Jaejoong only nodded smiling a bit noticing how mature BoA sounded at the moment.
“So now I want someone who can be by my side and support me. Someone I can trust and that accepts Yoobin and that she can also accept that person. Someone who encourages me…”
And Jaejoong nodded eagerly because he was sure he wanted to be that person for her.
“I can be that someone, I’ll definitely support you. This time I won’t let go no matter how difficult things can turn.” He said letting go of BoA’s hands and putting his hands on her shoulders.
“BoA I want to be with you.” He finished approaching his face to hers. But as soon as their lips got closer she pushed him away softly.
Jaejoong looked at her confusedly and slightly hurt but waited for her explanation.
“Jaejoong, more than ten years have passed and I think we have changed in someway. So I think we shouldn’t rush like this. Maybe we should date or something first.” BoA said sitting a bit farther from him and surprised at herself for saying those words.
But she was honest by saying they shouldn’t rush things. She had already learnt that with Yoochun.
“Sorry” Jaejoong said looking down and they remained silent once again.
“I’m really sorry.” BoA said and stood up but Jaejoong grabbed her wrist.
“It’s ok, I understand you…For now we can be friends.” He said the last word with a sad smile.
He should be patient if we wanted things to go in the right way, even if for him having her so close and at the same so far was saddening.
But the feeling turned even more bittersweet when BoA put her arms around him and hugged him.
“Thank you, Jae.” She said with a relieve sigh and he felt warm inside by hearing her calling him like that.
So when the hug ended they sat on the couch smiling at each other in understanding until BoA noticed the candies on the table.
“I’ll take these to Yoobin’s room.”
Jaejoong looked at her worriedly.
“Isn’t she at her room?” He asked curiously.
But BoA only smiled awkwardly before answering.
“She is with her father. She always stays with him during the weekend.”
And even when Jaejoong nodded without changing his expression he was glad to know he could meet with BoA every weekend, but at the same time worried about Yoobin’s father.
“So, do you want to eat something? Want to watch a movie?” BoA asked with a nervous tone as she stood up, because she had suddenly realized they were alone in the house.
“BoA we are friends, right?” Jaejoong said sighing. “You don’t have to act so nervous in front of me.” He laughed softly and BoA blushed making him feel happy to know he still had that effect on her.
In the end they just turned the T.V on and started watching a random show that only ended as the background sound when they started talking nonstop about Japan, Seoul University, manga, design, their jobs, Junsu and the farm.
So it was only when the T.V announced the time that they realized they have been talking for hours.
“BoA, I have to go now. Tomorrow I have to go to Busan to cover a special musical there for the newspaper. I’ll be back on Monday.” Jaejoong told her with a hopeful expression wanting to get a positive response from her.
“Good luck with that report. I’ll bet it will be interesting. And maybe we can see each other on Monday.” BoA finally said after giving him a smile.
“Yeah…after work will be ok?”
“Umm…” Boa hummed biting her lip. She had realized something again. “I have to pick Yoobin from school.”
“I can accompany you…I want to meet her too.” Jaejoong said smiling goofily.
And BoA smiled back as she opened the main door for him.
“See you on Monday then.” She said waving at him.
“I’ll call you when I’m off of work, ok?” Jaejoong said waving his phone in his hand.
BoA nodded and waved at him again as he walked away.
And when she closed the door she started giggling thinking how silly this entire situation was.
Before, it was so normal to say goodbye with a kiss but this time they had waved to each other since they didn’t know in what other way they should say goodbye.
And even when things seemed to start again with the right foot, how long will this friendship will be able to last without the romantic feelings getting in the way?
How will Yoobin act when she meets Jaejoong?
Will Jaejoong be prepared to face everything ahead as he promised himself?
